Ryan Shazier: Realistically, is he coming back?

Considering the rod in the middle of his back no. The massive stresses professional football would place on his body are not even worth the risk. The risk isn't worth the reward. He's got money .If he manages it well he's set. I'd divert your passion into coaching.

That's what my hope would be.

100% no. I wish Ryan the best but he needs to stay off the football field as a player.

There is no way. He has come long way from where he was, but i think him being able to walk normally and maybe jog is about his ceiling. Even if he is cleared with his back fusion there is obviously other stuff going on.

By NFLPA rules, steelers must rehab him. Doesnt mean he is guaranteed a spot. He will never play again.

Don't you worry Steelers will do right by him. He is all but guaranteed a spot somewhere within the organization.

I just want to see him to continue to improve his quality of life, I think most agree he probably will never play again.

Not sure he is on page with that yet..And that is ok.

I’d never rule out a guy who has desire and determination like he does. But as a person with eyes who is not a doctor, I have to say my amateur opinion agrees with the consensus here. Hard to imagine him back on a field

No I can never, ever see him
being medically cleared to play in the NFL. No team would want that liability nor should Shazier take on that liability.
I think it speaks volumes how classy and humane this Steelers organization really is to pick up his 5th year option knowing full well he won’t be playing again.
I wonder how many other organizations would have done that with a 9 million dollar option.

I apologize for being so clueless, but I've haven't followed the team that closely since the fall because of a slew of problems in my personal life. Lost my grandpa and my mom got cancer.

Anyway, I know Ryan Shazier has been seriously injured and has a long road to recovery. The topic almost seems to be taboo, though. Is he coming back to play? I know not this year but maybe next year? Would there be a risk of reinjury?

I really hope if he doesn't play again, he stays on staff. He's a smart guy, an inspirational guy, and I can see him excelling as a coach.

He can come back to the organization, but his playing days are over. Has anyone in the NFL come back from a spinal stabilization surgery with items in their back to play football? If so, who?

Meh people play after that, but he is at least a year or two getting to playing shape if he ever gets there.... not exactly something thats worth fighting to... just tell the league to put him in charge of their youth tacking education program

Name one player who has had the same injury and has returned? I know of one who had a similar injury, Johnny Knox. Never played again.

They picked up his option prior to the injury. It became fully vested, automatically, when he was injured while playing. Under the collective bargaining agreement, they couldn't drop the option after he got injured.
That said, the Steelers ARE a classy organization and I'm perfectly sure that even after paying him $9M and him not being available on the field, they'll find a job for him after his rehab is done. I also wouldn't bet against Urban Meyer finding a coaching job for him at tOSU.
Even without being able to play again, the kid has options.

No.

Anyone know what kind of compensation pick we'll get for him eventually?

I have spinal rods and screws and can’t imagine him playing football again. I’m by no means a pro athlete, but I am an electrician and my career has had to undergo major changes in what I can do and lift. Two years out and some days my wife and kids still have to help me put on my sox. Good luck to Ryan, but don’t even risk it. Love your wife and kids and influence the game in another way. Just my 2 cents...

The highest possible is a 3rd round comp, but he'd have to be a FA and leave the team and be signed by another. This is new territory. I believe the Steelers should be compensated in some way for paying a player who will never play a down of football, 9M.

I don't think the rules allow for any compensation for an injured player though. If he was a Pat, they would probably get a first from Ol' buddy Rog...

Oh I wasn’t aware they picked up the option prior to the injury. Thanks for clarifying. I’m so happy that he has that to fall back on and realize it’s not anywhere what he would have gotten had the injury not occurred and he signed an extension, but at least he had that.
Yeah I’d like to see him hook on with OSU and get some coaching experience and one day come back to us as a coach. I’ll be pulling for him as we all will.

If I may ask.. was it due to injury or something like spinal stenosis? I have spine issues myself.

yeah knew that was coming, unfortunately

Career over. Shame it ended the way it did. Hope they really do a better job teaching these younger players not to lead with their helmets.

I always had a bad feeling there was something seriously wrong with Shazier. I sensed something was not right with him. The early concussion injury's in his career didn't look all that bad, looking back at the hits. It just didn't take much of a hit to his head to cause injury.

I doubt the NFL would ever allow him to play again regardless of his ability. Can you imagine what would happen if he reinjured himself? That would be the end for a sport that's probably on its way out anyway.

In another great gesture, the Steelers converted most of Shazier's salary this year to a signing bonus so he can have access to it now. Nice move!

I'm glad the Steelers are taking care of him and hope they will continue to support him in an off the field role.
