OK - disclaimer, it was against a bad Bungs team but...

Gotta say I"m impressed so far, both with Mason and with the way the Steelers have handled him. He made the plays that were there and displayed great pocket awareness. Accuracy was generally really good. Loved the embraces with his line after the TDs - looks like a great teammate with leadership capabilities. Also was impressed with his interview after the game. What a humble guy with great self-awareness. He was always deflecting the praise away from himself and onto his teammates. Seemed to completely realize that he is the new guy surrounded by established veterans. Willing to take the blame for losses ala last week and doesn't want to overstep and take too much credit for the win.

As for the teams handling of him: He landed in a perfect spot with an established QB and good supporting cast (especially the Oline at pass pro). They were able to bring him along slowly and not throw him to the wolves to get eaten alive and spit out in pieces like so many teams have done with their QBs of the future in an effort to appease their fans and Win Now. Lets hope the development continues apace and they keep adding more to the game plan. We are not going to beat a lot of teams with the dink and dunk/Wildcat. Gotta open up the field and the kid has the arm talent and pocket presence to get it done IMO.

Not gonna get too high when he’s good or too low when he’s bad.

He had a lot to prove. But he has a whole season to do it. So far he looks pretty good. I hope he continues to get better.

What I liked is that Prime Time National TV wasn't too big for him whatsoever. He has that "It" quality about him IMO. You can see in the way his teammates (especially the OL) embrace him and react to him already.

The game plan appeared to me to be a drastic departure from the norm. They knew from last week that running up the gut wasn't working, and maybe they didn't feel comfortable letting Mason air it out.
I think last night was the perfect game plan for what has been ailing us, and to give Mason some confidence moving forward.
I don't think what we saw last night will work every week, and at some point we are going to have to cut him loose, but if the coaches can get creative enough the season might not be too terrible.

He is showing improvement but I am not going to anoint him as the next big thing just yet.

I will anoint him when Ogre does what needs to be done.

Very impressed looks they really wanted to limit deep passes and do the old brady and pre injury ben dink and dink to RB and speed WR's

He looks like a QB

I approve

Was Ben's headset even hooked up? lol

I'm pretty happy with his progression and agree that I hope we see more of it. Preferably on a weekly basis. He seems to have decent pocket presence and some ability to extend plays. Let's go Steelers!

Poor Bengals, there was absolutely no way for them to prepare for anything that happened last night. This also makes the Baltimore coaches spear their game planning time thin too. Which O game plan do you prepare for, if you are Hairball?

to run blitz a lot.

Mason is doing just fine. If butterfingers doesn’t drop a first down catch against Seattle, good chance he wins that game in relief. Came in cold in 2nd half and put up two TD tosses.
And most likely if Connor holds on to the ball in SF, where he tossed two more TDS, good chance of his first win as a starter.
Why JaySam wasn’t used in SF is beyond me as it would have helped.
I think he will get better every week and as someone pointed out, MNF stage was not too big for him.
They will open the playbook up for him as he gains more and more confidence and comfort. I think he’ll be a good one.

to run blitz a lot.

The Wildcat can chew that to pieces. Baltisore has its 3 big uglies on the DL, blitzes the A or B gap on one side, maybe send 2 blitzers to both A gaps ...

And better pray that Samuels does not toss the thing to Conner on the move. He takes it while moving 10 mph, is well outside the tackle box before the blitzers can get to the backfield, and now Conner is in open space with one outside backer, a CB, and a safety, with two blockers (WR, TE).

That is a recipe for a long run.
