Rounds 4 to 7 Discussion

the combine results of Feeney makes him a valuable asset, even if as a developmental player. Does anyone know his KEI number? they should be really high

i think the guy with the toughest time making the team is 6th round Feeney. He's a developmental OLB and we know that learning the steelers OLB takes time even for top prospects. There are 4 OLB + Harrison ahead of Feeney. That means to make the team it will have to be on special teams

The 7th rounders Matakevich and Ayers will also have to make it with special teams but the depth chart at their positions are not as stacked.

Ayers only has to beat out guys like Eli Rogers and Shakim Phillips to be the #5 WR and the return jobs are wide open assuming they'd like to get AB off punt duty. If Ayers shows anything at all as a return man, his spot should be safe on the roster.

Matakevich will battle with Feeney but Matakevich does not have as much depth in front of him at ILB. He also has less of a transition because he did similar things at Temple. They signed Steven Johnson for depth at ILB. I can see Matakevich pushing Vince Williams off the roster if he shows well on special teams.

to me Matakevich seems to be the one with the toughest chance to make it

In just looking at the positions that were drafted it is obvious they made a concerted effort to hit all of their need / thin areas. CB, S, DT, OT, OLB, ILB, WR (question mark thanks to Bryant).

I also think Matakevich will have a tougher time making the roster than Feeney.. we need outside pass rush desperately. Sure there is depth ahead of him, but it's not necessarily high quality depth.

Jarvis, Dupree, Moats, Chickillo, Harrison are ahead of Feeney. Since Jarvis is mediocre and Harrison is an old man who could break at any time, Moats isn't going anywhere. That means Feeney would have to beat Chickillo for a spot and Chickillo has a year of experience on him which we have seen is a really big deal in the steelers scheme.

The depth was worse at OLB last year and Chickillo did not make the team. He was practice squad.

Matakevich only has to beat out Vince WIlliams who is a limited 2 down player. If Matakevich shows better vs the pass and is good on special teams, he has a good shot at beating out Williams or even Steven Johnson. They will keep 1 of Williams of Johnson for sure because they will need a veteran ILB backup, but if they keep a 4 ILB, i can see it being Matakevich if he is also a special teamer

After losing Spence and I believe Williams is in final year of contract, I would think an ILB would have a great chance of making roster.
Particularly as often as Shazier is hurt.

Matakevich is just one of those guys that'll be too hard to cut, I believe he makes the team.

Feeney is a better athlete than Chick. Moreover, I don't think we ever drafted Chick as a potential starter. Feeney has such gawd given tools that I think plans are in motion to make something out of him. Don't be surprised if he's in the edge rotation by mid-season. If Harrison doesn't come back (which he may not), Feeney will see significant playing time this season. We don't have a linebacker with his coverage skills.

An interesting observation considering that Jarvis spent a lot of time dropping into coverage last year. Whether by design or because he's just not showing results as a pass rusher.

I thought he was rushing the passer, just in the wrong direction.

I think there is depth at OLBer, but not the type of depth that a OLBer can't surprise.

Moats is just serviceable, Chickillo as was mentioned is a long shot.

I actually think we have a spot at OLBer and ILBer for the taking.........

Not sure anyone drafted isn't viewed as a potential starter. I am sure that is how they coach them up.

But yeah I like this kids potential especially his coverage ability. And with depth not so great at the position, a player somehwat surprising would be welcomed.
