Roster Guess - June 10th

Which team in the NFL does this wonderful job of always having first rate talent languishing on the bench ready to take over for the starters? Do they exist?

I would argue a lot of teams would have problems if a few of their frontline starters get hurt. I just get bored with constant griping about the way the roster is put together in just about every ******' position. Like there are not 31 other teams that draft and involve themselves in FA.

As to the roster, I would like to see a guy like Cameron Clear make it over Speath.

I'd like to see both of then on the team as well as James and Heath

I just finished logging snap counts from last year's games and if there is a positive when discussing the DE position, it's pretty obvious this team will give heavy work loads to both Heyward and Tuitt (thus no Cam Thomas).

If you can believe it, the last 4 games last year Tuitt had more snaps than Heyward: 229/258 (88.8%) vs. 227/258 (88.0%).

That's a pretty good indication they plan on having both DE's play 85%+ for the season. And remember, a lot of "lost snap counts" is because of formation (i.e. nickel), not just that Cam Thomas is substituting into the base defense.

So as long as we stay healthy, we can hope to see a lot of Heyward and Tuitt and a rotation of McLendon and McCullers at NT and only Thomas very sparingly (if at all).

In fact, Thomas' snap counts were their lowest of the season those last four games Tuitt started (13 - 11 - 17 - 6 = 47/258 = 18.2%). I am hopeful McCullers starts getting that 18% and Thomas ends up with what McCullers got last year (about 5%).

i don't think that would happen just by the experience fact. Spaeth is a vet, knows the playbook, knows the system and if Heath goes down no way this coaches would go with two rookies

I'm really hoping the young DEs show enough to get Cam Thomas cut

I didn't realize that the pendulum had swung that far from Thomas to Tuitt. I liked the Tuitt pick.

I know snap counts are in the Game Book and recently saw that Football Outsiders had a per game snap count. In both cases, it is a per game (or all season for Outsiders). I'd like to be able to click on a player and see the number of snaps played per game (and as a %) and a total for the season.

I just read an article about running backs that surprised me a bit. This guy Scheuerman is quite the surprise ( to me , maybe not to others). I didn't know he was a KO return specialist and that they took him off returns as a senior because he was too valuable a weapon for the offense. Out of the 4 kicks he was allowed to return as a senior. he took one 'to the house'. We could use a good solid return guy to get AB outta there.

that's why preseason rosters can be fun and as mentioned a good amount of the spots is taken.

There is always room for two dimentional players like Scheu on the roster if they prove more than capable.

Although a long shot if he shined enough he could short term leave Harris off the roster and upon Bell's return throw Archer off as well.

We look at it as a unlikely..... but that is why they strap the pads on.

Hell if they wanted to keep Archer and weren't ready to kick him to the curb, they could shorten another position.

I see 8 possible "surprises" that could bring new depth once the final cutdown comes.

I don't see anyone pushing Adams off which is why I didn't list T. As the Army prospect is a little too raw from changing positions IMO.

I don't see Clear being the blocker that would push Spaeth off the roster either.

I also would like to see a DE brought in at the final cuts to replace Cam.

if not a youngster i would sign someone like red bryant and cut the useless fat thomas
Even if you don't sign anyone it is an upgrade he was terrible. The team might be just as effective with ten players as with ten players and Cam Thomas.

Coach Butler will get a round Tuitt this preseason.

I'll send him mine....

I think the best chance of Thomas not making the roster is if they need camp room and he is obviously outplayed by a younger guy in camp...especially if its something the press pushes... if he makes it to the first game he will get playing time not matter how badly he performs... but if its a money issue due to injuries in camp, that may be a low hanging fruit cut...

Talking with Dale Lolly he seems to think we're keeping 6 D-lineman on the roster.

And I think it comes down to whether Walton or another young kid can be the 6th guy instead of Thomas. As much as we hate him on the roster, I can understand from Tomlin's point of view that having a guy with experience to play all the line spots while only keeping six guys on the roster might be important just in case an injury happens early in the season.

I think they will only keep six as well del. Although in the case of Thomas he is consistently bad and even an unknown project at least has the possible upside of being good or better than awful and it is doubtful to me that Thomas does.

Maybe we will all be surprised and after a year in the system he will have learned his position better and be a much better player this year. I put the chances of that at between slim and none and slim is looking for a bus ticket right now.

Just seems like that sleeper guy that will emerge. Depot is all about him. He's a prototypical 3-4 DE that's been in 4-3 DT purgatory with the Rams. The Rams had lots of depth on their line & apparently several teams were interested in him when he hit FA. Everyone wants a guy to push Cam Thomas out & I think Conrath is that guy.

The thing about Cam Thomas is, at the time, it wasn't all that bad a signing. We really wanted to keep Al Woods but when we refused to come up to his contract demands (or we called his bluff and lost), we were put behind the 8-ball about 3-4 days late in the free agency period. Cam Thomas was probably the best available at the time.

We just asked WAY too much of him and asked him to play WAY too many snaps for his talent level. Trying him at nose tackles was a joke some games (and again, the fact we pushed him into that spot rather than giving McCullers even 10 snaps a game was mind numbing). Cam is probably really only a 3-4 DE and can maybe give you 5-6 snaps at NT is you are up against a really small center. This coaching staff treated him like a full time DE and NT in the rotation and he can't do that.

There's a big difference between being asked to be the #4 D-lineman on the team (last year) and now being the #6 D-lineman on the roster. If anything that just means your team is better and deeper up front. But that also means players like McCullers and Geathers are indeed better than Thomas. We really haven't proven that yet and won't until I see some real games.
