The Steelers issued Cockrell a one-year contract tender for $1.797 million, sources told the Post-Gazette. That is the lowest of three different tenders they could have chosen. By doing so, another team would have to give the Steelers a pick in which Cockrell was originally drafted, which was the fourth round by Buffalo in 2014.

I'm sorry but this is a bad gamble. Cockrell isn't great, but he knows the system well and the next man up after him would be William Gay ( our best slot corner ) who's slowed down a bit due to age or a very unproven Shabazz. Neither are good for the outside in the base defense.

1.79 million is a fraction of the cap these days. But the domino effect if Burns were to get hurt or if we lost Ross would be visible. Yeah, we could sign a free agent who doesn't know the system...odds are he won't be as good in 2017.

It's a negotiation tactic that could backfire. cough*Emmanuel Sanders*cough. But it could let another team negotiate a long term deal that we like and all we have to do is match. If no one signs him it brings him back to the negotiating table with a better understanding of his market value and all of a sudden a three year 7.5 million dollar deal looks sweet.

Cockwell should stay but would do well to upgrade the slot and his position.

Cockrell needs to be upgraded, Gay is done, he can't cover anymore.

I would agree. William Gay is best used as a dime player player in the zone these days, He's slowed down visibly.

On a good secondary Cockrell is the 3rd corner, but tThe Steelers he's worth a heck of a lot more than a 4th round pick.

With cap space for a change, and the team being close to a super bowl, it's time to Paint Ross a better deal.

If we lose him, we might be forced to pick corner again in rounds 1 or 2.

Cockrell is way over rated, why so muck love here, he does not improve this defense

Cockrell was either playing over his head or regressed. He was bad last part of the season. Only benefit is he knows the system. I don't think him staying or leaving makes the team any better or worse. They need upgrades period. Cutting Gilbert was dumb he didn't even seem to get a chance. No idea why they trade for corners and have them ride the pine

Cockrell was adequate. His main value to the Steelers is that they can't seem to draft jack **** for DB talent.

Our head coach earned his chops as a DB coach and our second-best CB was drafted by Buffalo in the 4th round.

Davis and Burns seem to be working out

We'll see. If so, it only took Tombert ten years to make their second good pick.
Maybe Golson will show up for the regular season sometime.

There is a lot of love for **** here for one reason only. He completes the equation...

Gay Burns Golden ****! Otherwise it wouldn't be funny!

Gay Burns Golden Shabazz? No! I was wrong. Still funny.

To me its a band aid. They know they want either a FA or a draft pick to take his spot but they can't afford to not have him if they can't get someone who can play worth a ****. Cheap gamble for us and if he goes off and gets paid next year maybe we get a comp pick the next year

We had to keep his cap number as low as possible so we would have plenty of room left over to ink Uncle Jarvis to a league high edge rusher contract, we'll be lost and our secondary exposed without the relentless pressure JJ has brought to the table.

I remember being frustrated over the years at Cowher's secondaries. The way they played off all the time and such. Then Tomlin came, with as you said, DB pedigree. I remember early in 2007 being really excited after they shut out Seattle, I think, that maybe they will get away from some of those things that frustrated me. Looking at it now, it sure hasn't played out that way, has it?

Cockrell has value if for no other reason that you have to put someone out there. You can't play with 10. Well, you shouldn't, anyway. And since the Steelers aren't going to bring in a CB that will cost big bucks, they'd better know what their doing with Cockrell.

Agreed! If we go into 2017 with Cockrell starting and Will Gay as the slot man, forget about it.
This team must upgrade over those two otherwise you will get same results.

Cockrell has done a nice job overall, but still needs upgraded. You want him to be your No. 3 or 4 option, not one of the two starters. Not sure the Steelers can hit the jackpot two years in a row with rookie cornerbacks who can step into the starting lineup and not look completely out of place.

**** upgraded the position, it is just now he needs upgrading. But yeah he would be a ideal 3 or 4 CB.
