By: G.Stryker   Roosevelt Nix was just released from the Pittsburgh Steelers.* A few days ago, none of us would have foreseen this move.* That was until the Steelers went out and signed Derek Watt to a 3 year $9.75M contract.* The Steelers don’t keep 2 fullbacks on the roster, and last year, they barely […]

Gotta be the least surprising post of the day. Rosie was a hardnosed dude who reveled in the "dirty work" needed to make a team successful. This one's gotta hurt Tomlin a bit - Nix appeared to be one of his favorites. Hopefully our newest Watt can fill his shoes. I believe he will - seems to be a very willing/able blocker and the Watts all seem to come with a seriously strong work ethic.

Thanks "G" for the write up

I liked Rosie for his special teams play but Tomlin and company never seemed to get what a FULL BACK's job really was and NO it's not fake punts option.

days of the FB belly plays and lead blocker are long gone. easier to take a defender out of the run play with a WR spread wide. I am old school as anyone with I, Power I, and Maryland I, but that ain't modern day football.

First of all I always liked Rosie, and like DIC above I agree that the coaches never used the FB role properly. As I also believe they have not used the TE position to full potential. I wish him the best of luck in his future.

Quick question. How long did his contract have to go,or was he a FA?

He signed a 4 year a few seasons back.

Let me tell you that our biggest signing in free agency outside of our own free agents is a FB. Though I think this one could play a bit of TE too

It’s the part of the NFL I have always struggled a bit with. We all expect the players to honor the contract they signed, but have no problem calling to cut guys to get under the cap. Look at Barron,I mean he lasted a year. He signed a contract gets cut. I get that these guys make obviously a ton of $$$$$$$. But they are also Human. Undoubtedly some move their families, enroll the kids in schools, purchase a home, etc.

Shouldn’t the onus be on the team to do the due diligence,if they **** it up they should honor the contract. Like I said,I hate it when a player threatens the old walkout, sit out to renegotiate and all that crapolla as well. It seems to be changing with all the guaranteed money now. But I am thinking more of the Rosie Nix’s type of player.

No time to honor all contracts in the persuit of a shiny trophy. It is the nature of the beast. It can be a frustrating aspect for a player and his family sure. Which is why the grass isn't always greener. If you are going to jump for money you better think hard if your a good fit on that team with their coaches and their scheme. Or simply understand your true value. Which is a difficult situation to figure out.

Was always a fan of Rosie. Wish he could have stayed healthy for us but its a business and we move on.

Yeah i think Nix health was the factor... but i prefer actrue blocking fullback to a tweener H-back type ... Im not sure where watt 2.0 falls... i dont want another Carey Davis or a David Johnson type... i dont think just putting a guard in goal line type situations is a good method either...

Maybe with a tweener would use him more than just a road grader. He seems to block well and might be able to do enough to stay on the field in more situations increasing the use of a fullback.

Apparently Watt is a true full back that can also catch the ball so what's wrong about improving a position?
I really like Nix but he makes us one-dimensional on offense and we don't know how he is health-wise right now

Watch the college video I linked to in my article. It does a really good job of showing what he looks like as a lead blocker.

I hope he catches on somewhere. FB is a brutal position and seems low pay as well. I too hope he finds a place to stick.
