Rooney: Steelers ‘Pretty comfortable’ with their QBs

it all depends on Ben coming back.

It was their biggest fail last year and if they take the same approach they better pray Ben holds up this year or it will be a repeat of results. I will wait and see but if they think Rudolph is their backup answer they didn't pay attention. In the very least they need a vet to provide Rudy some competition. And experience at that position never hurts.

I think the statement means they think they've found something with Lynch. They can't really think Duck is an NFL level qb. They're pretty tight against the cap, so any vet they might be able to get will be very uninspiring. I'd still bring someone in to make it a 3 way battle for the 2nd and 3rd spots. Duck was a great story that kept things interesting during a season that was basically lost when Ben went out, but it's time to move on.

How on earth do you come to that conclusion. Paxton's Lynch is a failed first round pick having full opportunity to succeed in this league. Do you honestly believe if they believed they had 'found something' in him, that he wouldn't have got a chance last year. C'mon.

Duck is a quack

Sooooooo....when Ben is injured next season you're totally okay with Mason Rudolf taking the reigns again? seriously?

That is a special kind of stupid right there.

The Steeler's need an insurance policy behind Ben and we sure as HELL dont have it on the roster right now. Colbert, do your damn job and find a way to bring in a solid veteran QB. What is Mike Tomczak up to? :becky:

Yeah very concerning that viewpoint. A lot of fail in that train of thought. We will see if that is a free agency smoke screen. But yeah if you think about all the good moves they made and still didn't make the playoffs? No reason not to think if Ben isn't healthy the same result will come about. At least give the team a fighting chance with solidifying a questionable position.

My problem, amongst many, was the opening statement in the article. We finished a respectable 8-8. Average would be better word and I don't want to hear the BEN ROETHISBERGER injury excuse. ANYONE AT ANYTIME could be lost to injury, what if Tomlin went down in the second game and we had an interim HC who went 8-8, would that be respectable even with a full play-on Ben R. ?

To many here are accepting a subpar season and writing it off for Tomlin as being some sort of genious guru. The coaching hasn't changed and the results will be similar. I think Ben's injury helped to prompt the aggressive trade for FITZ., otherwise who knows? (Roethlisberger had injury concerns prior to game two so management knew of the potential)

I just feel Tomlin got a free pass due to injury and has never really been held accountable to a fair degree in the pass.

I think everyone knows we can't afford a veteran QB, so they aren't going to come out and say, "yeah Rudolph was kind of ******"
If someone comes along that they can sign, they will.

If Ben can't sling it and play a ful season, it may be the year to have the 4-12 or 5-11 season and let Mason/Lynch lead the way. That way, they have a better chance to get our next franchise QB. It would be painful, but there are so many unknowns going into this 2020 season. LIttle cap, Ben is not a lock to play, Bud may not be back, no #1 pick and they don't really have a #1 RB, etc. Ben's situation does put them in a tough spot with his age and injury. We'll see how it plays out.

That's pretty much what the article says, if you read between the lines.

They couldn't afford Nelson but signed him to what their highest free agent contract ever?

Knowing how they can manipulate their cap and have done so year after year after year the can't afford something theory doesn't fly with me. There should be some affordable QBs available..

Nelson is the 26th highest paid CB in the NFL, that wasn't exactly a big pay out. That was before Ben's new contract, we now have Bud to tag (16million), Heyward and JuJu to resign (both will be top 10 contracts), Watt is going to max out next offseason, along with Nelson being due a new contract, then Minkah the year after. They could land a guy like Keenum, but again they aren't going to say "our back up QB's are shaky". If there's a guy they can afford and sign they will.

They expect Rudolph to fare better with a little experience under his belt.

Ben currently has the 2nd heaviest 2020 cap hit of any player in NFL. The reality is they have already spent their QB money.

Even a guy like Keenum had a 7.5 million dollar salary last season.

They are trying fake out the rest of the NFL so that nobody jumps in front of them and picks up whatever ****** QB they are hoping to pick up in the late rounds. We need quality ****** QBs.

It's ride or die next year anyway. That first round pick got invested in a proven defensive talent. Work on the OL.That's probably the most important need.Train the hell out of your backup quarterbacks and pray Ben comes back ready to get it done.

I live my life as a glass is half full kind of guy, but I'm very pessimistic about the future of the Steelers. Too many negative variables IMO.

Bah, Humbug!

Any of you with the proven qb backup are totally misguided. Its win or go home time. Ben gets hurt, either Rudolph is a starting NFL qb or not. **** or get off the pot. I'm not interested in another 8 win season. Nor am I interested in a team barely contending for playoffs. If they lose Ben either contend for real with Rudolph or get a high pick QB.

I think most fans would like to see a playoff appearance after two years of none. I don't like the loser mentality of tank if your franchise goes down. Eagles will tell you that isn't a smart approach.

I don't care for that mindset either, but I don't think Mason is the answer of post-Ben. If that's the case, this team needs a real, viable solution because Father Time is knocking on Ben's alarm clock. Another 8-8 season gets us what? No PO and another #18-21 spot in the draft. To get our next guy, we need a Top 10 pick.

I don't see us tanking with this defense, even with crap at QB last season we finished 8-8 because of the defense.

Well most fans here seem to feel that anything short of a SB isn't really a success if you have a championship caliber QB. So if you want to tell me the last team to win a SB without a championship caliber QB, I'd like to hear that. He doesn't have to be one, but certainly in the top ten. usually top 5. You enjoy the veneer of contending. I get it. But for really winning it all, you gotta go to the bottom for a while.
