Rooney says Steelers have pretty much shot their wad in FA - we're done

Exactly. What Rooney meant is that if the Steelers can find a FA willing to take the minimum (as Moats and McCain did last season), they will be willing to make some moves.

Well, it IS the off-season.
 
guys they will be cuts in june and a lot of players lowering their price

Our defense is still left on the sidelines . We have a descent offense and to win a division or make a playoff game we need to improve on what we have ignored. Any one shaking their heads here.
 
FA guarantees a team nothing. We see this year in and out and it seems that in most cases the only ones coming out winners are the FA's themselves. We've been pretty successful with this approach over the years of not getting involved in overpaying these guys. I like the approach of now keeping our own guys instead. I look for A June 1'st move on Troy for an addition to cap money and a possible Cam Thomas cut to add money. I then can see extensions for Cam Heyward and Calvin Beachum. Also we bring back James for one last time as well. Of course they may see someone they like after June 1'st that can help them but don't look for anything now. They're concentrating on the draft. Oh, also think they bring back Heyward Bey as well.

Keeping our own guys is fine but when they are below the line we shouldn't be afraid and sign a player that fits our system that would upgrade a position. It would also give us more flexibility come draft time.
 
It's the snowball effect. For years the Steelers kept their own players and would fill a hole or two with a FA. The past few years the drafts have been so bad that they've allowed their own to walk and the ones left aren't that good. It all starts with the draft. IF the Steelers draft poorly then FA can't help them. It won't help any team without good drafts.

If Jones, Hood, Shazier, Woodley etc... were playing at a high level (and Woodley still here) then none of this would be an issue. It's an issue because Tombert can't draft defense worth a ****. Has anyone ever heard of a coach/GM being ecstatic because a player had a bad workout so they could draft him? I really don't understand it. I watched film on Jones and almost immediately I knew that he would have issues at the NFL level. Hell Georgia moved him around trying to free him up. Same with Hood who should have always been in a 4-3. He was a penetrating DL not a stand up and shed DL like Smith. Just bad drafting and player evaluations.

Just saw where James may go to the titans and is deciding between Pittsburgh and Tenn. His boys are split on the subject one for each and James feels he owes everything to Dick Lebeau. Looks like he is close to going to the titans. Sounds like he is facing a tough choice for some very real reasons that can be important to him. Might be interesting to see if Troy heads to Nashville as well.

I'm sure Tombert would be happy to let Deebo walk to the **** and get rid of another Cowher player. It only serves as a reminder that they can't draft **** on defense.
Anyone who thinks that they wouldn't let a better player walk because he wasn't one of theirs in order to replace him with an inferior player because he is one of their picks doesn't know business very well.

They have completely abandoned their defensive philosophy which is to (1) stop the run to make the opponent one dimensional, (2) rush the quarterback and (3) prevent against the big play. McLendon is a decent, but not a great presence in the middle, the outside linebackers are terrible and the secondary is awful as well. They need help at all three levels of the defense and it all starts with the pass rush. Colbert has not done well drafting outside linebackers:

2002-Alonzo Jackson (2nd)
2004-Nathaniel Adibi (5th)
2007-LaMarr Woodley (2nd)
2008-Bruce Davis (3rd)
2010-Jason Worilds (2nd)

Harrison was just a back up for Cowher I thought.

I don't recall saying that Haggans wasn't a good player. I said that Colbert hasn't done well drafting outside linebackers.

Now a days Haggans just might be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Steelers had free pick'ns back then. While I remember personally bitching about Haggens you are correct. What more can you ask from a 5th round pick.
