Rooney not expecting much more out of free agency for Steelers

While some teams say they haven't started, the Steelers might be done already.

Free agency is less than two weeks old, and the Steelers have added only an insurance-policy running back (DeAngelo Williams) and kicked the tires on a pair of second-level cornerbacks (Patrick Robinson and Sterling Moore), who wound up signing elsewhere.

Now, it appears if the Steelers are going to address their glaring needs at rush outside linebacker and cornerback, they will have to do it in the draft.

Team president Art Rooney II said Friday that the organization is moving forward without the expectation of adding a significant piece via free agency despite having the cap space to do so.

“We're still looking at what the options are, and we'll continue to do that,” Rooney said. “I think we're at this point not expecting that there's going to be a lot more activity out there, but we're certainly continuing to look. If there's a player that makes sense for us to pursue, we'll do that.”

he says if there is a player that makes sense they will pursue them....would you prefer they just sign some random FA just to waste money??

lake of major moves in free agency do not concern me

lol@we're done, where exactly did you come to that conclusion from the article?

Green Bay has built their teams primarily through the draft, free agency isn't the only way to improve. Granted, we have a couple of knuckleheads running our draft room, but we can always hope that they stumble upon a star, even if only by accident.

do I have to spell it out for you?

Is James Harrison a significant piece?

SNS has gone the way of ESPNTMZ. Sensational headlines to replace substance. ..

You calling Rooney a liar?

he came right out and said put away your little wishbooks - there won't be any free agents coming in to save us

They have hardly any money under the cap and they haven't drafted yet. Cleveland and Miami, to name two, had a lot of cap money to spend but they suck too.

where did you get THAT from?

I just posted an article - I din't say anything else about good or bad or anything

ha ha

oh wait - you were expecting another Pats thread to keep everybody entertained for the next 2 months?

Well ever since Rooney helped sweep Spygate under the rug I'm guessing lying isn't beneath him. So I'm expecting some BIG signing in the next day or month or two. :)

There are no good free agents left and with our needs there weren't many options to begin with. The decent guys got paid more then their worth
It sucks but it is what it is. We have to hope some of these guys we have can develop.

What's the big surprise about this? I'm ok with what little they did. The big name FA guys are way too expensive and rarely produce what they are paid for. I'll give the Rooney's a break on this topic. They've done enough.

Your title says "pretty much shot their wad in FA", Rooney didn't come out and say that, players get cut for various reasons he also said if someone became available they would look at it. Which is pretty much common sense moving forward.

It's a sensationalized headline lol we're done...............

The best known Steelers beat writer wrote an article several weeks back in which he stated the Steelers cap situation would improve considerably once Ben was re-signed.

I guess he was wrong or the terms were different than he expected? Is Troy's status holding the team up?

I can't imagine the Steelers would be able to go into the draft as is and not feel the need to force their hand instead of going BPA.

Wow...you guys are acting like a bunch of whiney *******. Roonie says they are pretty much done. Great. Let's draft a few kids and keep this era of rebuilding going.

uh, the Steelers are pretty much done once FA opens. Every year. How is this any different?

I'm sure they will add several folks who will be the equivalent of camp bodies, like usual... a la Moats and McCain last year.

While I agree with the first part of your post. These guys were more than just camp bodies...even though they contributed probably even more than expected. I did expect a few more players like them though considering our lack of talent at some positions.. We didn't even get that this year.

Obviously, this FA stuff is way above the line, for many here. We will continue to explore our options and if a player in FA, with his needle point up, so to speak, we may take a look at him. He has to be the right kind of player for us, with splash play potential.

Salute the nation

I won't pretend to be happy with the off-season. That D arguably is weaker. I know the draft will help but we know the Steelers drafts lately has been spotty. And free agency has brought us depth usually , not so much this year. So whatever their game-plan is I hope that depth finds its way after the draft....... Because I would not want to bank on the draft as being this years solution.......

we are 6 milion under and we can go 12 if we release troy (post june cut)and another 2 if tcam homas released . at the moment there are no good free agents available , let's draft and see what happen with the june cuts .we can always roll over the money saved into next season

See, I read that and translate it as that there is no one out there worth throwing money towards but they are still looking. No mention of waddage.

So save the money and roll it over to next year. I'd say 3/4 of our draft picks will be defense this year at least. Better make some big hits for needs in the first few rounds.

artistic license - news should be fun

SN has become a bunch of bitter boring old men sitting around smelling each other's farts
