Burns makes a mistake which leads to Davis making a mistake. Which leaves to golden being left alone on Gronk. Have to hope the growing pains don't last long

The defense has another problem.

Yes, the pass rush is beyond terrible. Yes the DB's inability to get an interception hurts. Yes, some of our defensive players are too injury prone, but it appears our once mighty and proud defense has another problem.

Stopping the run. In the past two games, our run defense has given up 223 yards and 140 yards. For the season the team has given up on average 4.7 yards against per carry and allowed 8 rushing touchdowns.

Only three NFL teams give up more than 4.7 yards per carry against, and only four NFL teams have given up more touchdowns on the ground.

There used to seasons when the defense gave up less than8 touchdowns vs the run, and we have only played 7 games! Furthermore, the lack of fire and pride, once a Steeler hallmark has been reduced to what looks like a shell-shocked team.

Ben, who looked to do more coaching than Tomlin on the sideline says Tomlin works the player too hard in practice. Whether that is true or is debatable, but this is not.

Adding a run stopping DL player, preferably a true nose tackle or beastly DT is a must. And adding some depth to the DL is also a must.

Is weak tackling a mistake or a physical or possible mental issue? I'm not saying guys can't improve, but this is a fundamental of defense.

Gronk always toasts us. He's tough to match up with, which begs the question as to why to ask a safety to cover him alone?

SMH did you even read the link look at the breakdown. Burns made a mental error then Davis made a mental error covering Burns's leaving Golden with no help.. ROOKIES

You don't have to push your agenda 24/7

Captain obvious. Heyward missing the last 2 games is a huge reason we gave up so many yards running. With that said, I still think we need a big nose tackle that can play all 3 downs and take up a double team like Big Snack did. Why everyone says we need to go away from a true nose tackle because of our sub packages pisses me off more and more each week. A big nose tackle that can consistently command a double team helps both the run and the pass rush, period.

They game planned to stop the pass. Tomlin admitted they were willing to bleed in the running game but guys weren't getting off blocks to make the tackles.

If it's obvious, then I ask the question why have the decision makers and coaches let it slip to this level?

We are not good vs the pass or run now, and the lack of pride is another issue.

Losing Heyward exposes the entire DL, but even with him, we've got major issues. A big NT/DT that can stuff the run and push the pocket is needed. Hargrave has not impressed. Sure he's a rookie, but you saw Hampton or Steed's worth as run stoppers very early in their careers once they played.

Tuitt was better last season, and we have little depth.

If I'm calling the defense, priority #1 is not to let a safety cover Gronk one on one. He always kills us. Tomlin never seems to learn. Let another player beat us. Blount is no pass catcher, so that means he has to use his WR's.

#2 would be to try to get pressure up the middle, and deploying the CB's and safety closer to the LOS to stop the run. This takes away some of Brady's favorite short passing routes. With no pass rush, might as well play big Dan a lot more. I'd like to see his snap count to see if they did.

What I saw was too many players in coverage.

obviously he didn't as it's a coverage mistake, not a tackling one

Yes, and that line is getting old. Now please chime in and tell us how rosy the run defense is.

no one is saying the defense is rosy.

yet those of us who watched the game saw that the defense was, unexpectedly, at least somewhat effective. Brady did not throw for 400 yards. Or for 4 touchdowns. We did not get torched. If you expected us to win this game without Ben on offense and without Heyward on D, then you're overly optimistic. Brady missed 7 passes and threw for his LOWEST yardage total on the season. Granted, he's only played three games, but he threw for 150 more last week vs Cincinnati and almost 200 more in his season debut against Cleveland. We did a decent job, but "decent" is not good enough against technology Tom.

No one call Burns a brain surgeon. Daivs has bad instincts for a safety. Davis did not make one tackle in the game.

Keep posting the miss tackles report. But find a blown coverage report if one is out there.

Brady didn't have to. He only threw it 26 times. I bet his record is amazing when he throws it less tan 30 times. Two fumbles lost by NE ( We were +1 on turnovers ) , and being up comfortable lead are the reasons why they didn't score more or get more yards.

My call on the game was

New England 31
Steelers 17

27-16 was the result.

The offense needs at least three touchdowns to win with this defense.

Amazing, it's like watching a boxer shadow box.....

Gronk beats everyone in the league. He's a fairly decent TE.

he was dinking and dunking, hitting Edelman on short crossing routes on 9 completions. But Edelman only gained 60 yards on 9 receptions. So to combat that, we bring a safety up (some genius decided that above) and that left Gronk open for a 36 yd td. Oh, Gronk also had a 37 yd reception, mostly YAC.

Like I said, the defense did a decent job. Not great, not spectacular. Decent. Of course we had mistakes using rookies, but ... we did decently all thing considered.

Yes, we KNOW you hate on Davis. Yes, we KNOW Davis has no mental ability and needs you to tie his shoestrings.

and when he puts it all together, we KNOW you'll still ***** and whine about him.

Now, all that said, how about Chickillo with his ONE amazing tackle?! no thread about that?

A lot of no calls on either side except for Solder's obvious two on Jones.

Wasn't the rush defense like 7th in the league BEFORE the Heyward injury? Wasn't the defense also 5th in rushing defense just last season? To say that the defense is "not good vs the run now" while not considering the loss of a huge contributor to that is ridiculous. The loss of Heyward has affected the rushing defense the same way it did those years that Aaron Smith was hurt.

Coach:

I don't understand the crucifying of Burns and Davis. They're going to make mistakes. They're ******* rookies and it's WEEK 7.

Wish I knew the answer. Hargrave has been OK but has a long way to go. If he can play the nose on all 3 downs and command double teams, then great. Putting 2 linemen and 1 or 2 LB's in there for passing downs, especially when one of them is Jarvis, and we get pushed all over the place. We need 3 athletic big men on our front and then rush 1 or 2 LB's to get consistent pressure.

Why isn't Justin Gilbert playing more? He has more experience and is just as fast and tall as Burns.

We kind of held our own against the run till Hayward went out. I'm no coaching genius but seems like there could be some cause and effect. Maybe a lot of us aren't smart enough to recognize how good he is.Don't need to be a NT to draw double and triple teams.

Mistakes happen, but must be balanced by positives. When we win few seem to care, when we lose its more of an issue.

We were doing very well against the run with Heyward. Teams really couldn't run on us. Hard to imagine he made that much difference but he did. In the first 5 games, teams didn't run on us, they passed all over us.
