Roethlisberger says retirement remains an option after 2017 season

Anyone see the story that Kirk cousins could be our guy next year? Thoughts?

I'm still on the record as saying Blake Bortels will be our guy if we decide to go "outside" the organization to find Ben's replacement.

In fact...I would prefer him over Cousins.

I would be ok with Cousins but he isn't the next coming of Big Ben.

Anyways if he did make his way to the Black n Gold (Ben isn't going anywhere yet), I would be making me a custom jersey with his number on it. And on the back?

I'd spell it "CuZin"

no sarcasm at all. one has nothing to do with the other.
Funny how we want honest answers from our atheletes and then when we dont like the answer we complain about it. I guess he could have said "Im not seeing past next week, Im soley committed to this season. Next year will come. We will see" which is nothing and what is the point in even asking. He gave an honest answer and that makes him a drama queen.
And the average playing career probably is 3 1/2 years and that does take into account guys who simply dont cut it. However, there are physical implications for those that do cut it and play more than that.

The jersey color has nothing to do with it. Give him time and weapons, and his already great accuracy numbers will improve. He'd be loaded here in Pittsburgh with more than enough options to distribute the ball to, and he has one of the top lines in the league to pass block. Plus we have solid stable coaching with unwavering support of our QBs. This team is talented on both sides of the ball and he'd be joining a Superbowl contender. What QB wouldn't want that situation over being paid an extra 4 mil a year to play for the dumpster fires in JAX or CLE???

I wouldn't be surprised if Baltimore wanted to make a switch next year, and get Cousins to replace Flacco. Cousins wouldn't even have to move his family!

Pittsburgh almost never gets into bidding wars for overhyped guys like cousins, i dont expect that to change on account of him. Again, he's decent, but not worth planning the next half-decade + for

Um...why??? Bortles is hot garbage

I think the answer is in your next post. They won't get into a bidding war with anyone over Cousin's though he has made enough money off of the Skins and this would be a great opportunity to put down roots with a great franchise with a track record of success and plenty of talent. So it is bidding war, rookie or reclamation project. Bortles falls into the later.

I agree Omar, the Steelers usually don't make a big play in FA for a QB. But when you have an O-Line built for the SB, you have the top RB and WR in the league, and your are 6 deep at WR, plus now you have a good D which may be great this year, you don't hand the keys to a Lombardi Lamborghini to Dobbs or Jones, or a middle FA QB. It would be dumb and the GM would be an idiot to do this as well.

Denver showed you don't get thick at receiver, offensive line, and D and give the team to Tebow. They went out and got Manning, and now they have a SB ring to show for it. Cousins isn't Manning of course, but you try your *** off to get the best QB you can, if Ben decides to hang em up.

These would be your choices:

Drew Brees QB 38 NO TBD $24,250,000 UFA Market Value
Kirk Cousins QB 28 WAS TBD $23,943,600 UFA Market Value
Sam Bradford QB 29 MIN TBD $18,000,000 UFA Market Value
Matthew Stafford QB 29 DET TBD $17,666,667 UFA

Brees & Cousins are the ONLY two I would want. St afford doesn't have the "put your foot down" leadership it would take for some of our DIVAS.

Sorry, not buying it. Just because the Denver franchise acted one way is no indicator that the Steelers would try to mimic them. Cousins isnt going to look at a team like Pittsburgh and say, "gee golly gosh, them Steelers sure do have a great roster! I'm gonna take substantially less in a contract that will likely be shorter and with less guaranteed money than I really want and suffered in Washington over 2 seasons for, so I can play with these fellers!" And again, Pittsburgh isnt going to enter an arms race with bated breath for someone who is going to command a far higher price tag than he's actually worth

I'd rather just roll the dice on an early rd pick than take bortles (bortles, mr. 5 interceptions in practice yesterday)

Brees might be interesting, but I want a first round pick spend on a QB.

Guys, read what Ben is saying. He's going to retire soon.

Manning begged to go to Denver, because he knew it gave him the best chance at one last Superbowl, and he went there for under fair market price for a top QB in the league, because that roster was loaded with pro bowl talent. Perhaps Breeze would be more analogous to Manning, due to age, HOF status, and ability to understand that the better the team's talent is, the better your chance at success.

On the Steelers side, it would be irresponsible to squander a Superbowl caliber roster on a rookie or middle ground FA. I never said the Steelers had to follow something that Denver did, but Denver showed the league that it can be done. Those precedents do change how GMs approach in maximizing the chance for a franchise to win a Superbowl. And if they choose to stay true to setting the status quo of tradition, and stay the course, Colbert will be out of a job in 4-5 years, just as the Superbowl window slams shut.

We know that the window with Ben is at the end. I hope we can get this year and next out of him. He has had major head trauma in his career with the hits and his motorcycle accident. He has 3 young kids at home and is set financially for life. Let's enjoy him while we have him.

I think he will pull this card for three more years then retire...

I think it's optimistic to think he'll play beyond 2017, let alone three more years. He called the most recent CTE findings "alarming" and said his wife wants him to retire now.

If the money's enough, he's playing.

I don't know how you can say that when we are seeing players retire early more often. What makes you think that Ben, who has more money than 99% of NFL players, would be more motivated by money than others? I'd be more inclined to think winning another championship would be his motivation.

Hope Ben loses a good 10 lbs during camp. He's looking more than a little plump this year.

Every year someone complains about Ben's weight. Has it ever effected anything? Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Winston etc aren't physical specimens. They don't need to be.

good. a larger ben is less mobile and thus less likely to leave the pocket and take cheap shots while scrambling.

Every one of the QB's you listed are in pretty darn good shape. Winston may be the exception. Ben was in much better shape the past 2 years. You'd think he'd want to be in the best shape coming into the final year or few of his career. They were showing him on NFL network in that yellow t-shirt before he put his pads on and he looked huge when he knelled down to hold a few snaps for the kicker.

His nipples are in good shape. Nice and pointy...

I cant speak about Winston. Brees and Rogers always appear to me in very good shape. As far as Brady the dude is a workout machine and his diet is like a Tibetan Monk. Pretty far off on that one.
