I just spent some time reading an article in the Post Gazette on this subject and viewed most of the comments.
Overall I would say there was a majority of negative banter in regard to extending Ben.
Anything from move on to Dobbs or Rudolph to letting him play the year and franchise tagging him the next year if it goes well.

With all the new rules in the NFL that protect QBs and WRs I think players may extend their careers and still play at a high level.
Guys like Brady and Brees get the ball out quick and live to play another down. Ben is a big bodied QB who used to hang onto the ball, shed tackles and extend plays. He was successful at times but took quite a beating over the years. Today he is surrounded by an OL and RBs who pass protect pretty well and his sack numbers are way down. He still needs to learn to throw it away once in a while instead of forcing things that aren't there. Overall I would place him in the top 6 or 7 QBs in the league. I could not believe some of the comments about moving on to Dobbs as a viable option. There are teams that struggle for years to find a QB that gives them a legitimate chance to win each and every week of the season. Ben provides drama at times. Overall I would rather bet on a guy who played WR in high school until getting the chance at QB in his senior year, played point guard in basketball, shortstop in baseball and is a pretty good golfer to boot. ( Captain of all 3 of those sporting teams as well.)
The point I am trying to make is that it is hard to find someone who has the competitive drive and skill set to perform mentally and physically at a high level for an extended period of time.
If you think the team is capable of competing then why wouldn't you structure a deal for the next 3 to 4 years that will allow him to retire a Steeler and provide options for the team after 2 years should it not go favorably.

Thoughts?

Realistically, he will be pretty productive for the next 2-3 years but I'd extend him for 5years with the tail end loaded for "cap" friendly retirement. Ben's smart enough to know it's a business and he is also smart enough to know if he plays pretty good, the STEELERS would extend or restructure him again to get his pay per level of play. The STEELERS will take care of BEN in the correct fashion he deserves.

I would like them to get this done SOONER than later.

Really. lets let him prove himself with out the great AB and LB to hold him up. what has he accomplished without those two. Really

He won 2 SBs with a pretty meh to bad offense.

You and I both know BEN isn't a problem and doesn't have to prove anything. His play has proven itself and then add in the meMEme twins and it should be a relief they are gone. BEN made them, NOT the other way around. Let's see them prove otherwise............

He's going to get a LARGE signing bonus - probably in the $40 to $50 million range. If we only sign him for 2 years, his cap hit will be ginormous for those 2 years. If we sign him for 5 years with the expectation he only plays 2 or 3, we will end up with dead money the 2 or 3 years after he retires. There's no good answer other than we definitely want him to play for as many years as he can at his current level. If he plays 3 or more years, both picks on Dobbs and Rudolph will be wasted picks as they will both have moved on. So, that might be something to consider, especially if Rudolph looks like the QB they thought they were getting this year in camp and preseason. And, if Rudolph continues to look good as Ben's backup, they may end up having to give him a starting QB contract without him actually starting in the NFL - similar to what some other teams have done.

I hear what you are saying as to no real right answer. The FO will have to make that call and go with what is best for the team. As for the talented "EXTRA" quarterback, it's a good problem to have. This is where the coaching earns it's money, they will have to decide when it's time for BEN to hang them up. His play on the field will determine some but he will be to stubborn to just quit. Injury or winning #7 will determine a lot also. This team has enough talent to win it all provided the COACHING steps it up. Two early / mid season starters from this draft and we could be right where we need to be.

Ben's extention is going to be critical and needs to happen sooner than later. His numbers need to reflect top 5 money and tail end of contract retirement friendly as IN give some signing bonus back if retire wheather willingly or not.

4 years 100 million 25 SB

3 years, 76 million. I hope Ben does not sign until the season is over and tells Rooney either not to re-sign Or fire Tomlin as part of the t’c and c’s of his new deal.

4 years 90-110 mill 40-55 mill SB

or in 2 years let ben and mason compete for starting job if asa back up he looks good and his practices and film study is A+, Dobbs I would use a gadget player 3-5 plays a game read option and PA bootleg

3-5 years and a dump truck full of cash. If they can win 1-2 super bowls in that time then it was well worth it.

Got to fix the defense. Got to. Got to. Got to! I think we're already proven that no matter how much offensive talent they have you just can't do it with a lousy defensive secondary. The qb pressure is lousy when it matters most as well. If only Big Dan could be big mean nasty powerful tree stump Dan who train wrecks your plans for the day.

if we stay with this spread offence and his downfield arm strength doesn't fade he like Elway and brady can easi;ly play till 42.

Five years 1 Billion dollars with 250 million signing bonus all guaranteed. plus he can pick any woman he wants to give him a blowjob after each win. This is why I would be a players owner.

Hopefully a longer extension than Tomlin gets. That would send a message.

sorry next time I will do a sarcasm alert

I prefer the [sarcasm-font] for my less than obvious comments [sarcasm-font].

three year extension and his total yearly value will be near 30mil.
he won't come in at a discount IMO.
