rewatching 2020 season

I went back and watched the 1st 15 games of 2020 season. I Know we have a lot of obvious holes to fill. Center, tackle, RB etc. But man we really really really need a true nose tackle.

We need a Joel Steed, Casey Hampton type guy. I know with so many holes to fill we cant address dline on day 1 or probs even 2. but we need to figure nose tackle out

I almost think a Dalvin Tomlinson signing would be more important than a bud dupree resigning.
 
Been saying that since Big Snack left. All the pundits keep saying is they don't play that way anymore and don't need a NT. I say they aren't playing that way because they don't have a good true NT. The big uglies on both sides of the ball control the line of scrimmage and control the game. We need a good NT that, yes, can play 3 downs. There is no reason a NT can't clog up the middle and occupy 2 guys and/or collapse the pocket on passing downs while everyone else does their thing. But, a NT is not in the cards according to the gurus.
 
I agree, but Tomlin will not use 3 DL, he just won't. So many times i've seen us in a short yardage defense with just 2 DL. He'd rather pull that Dlinemen off the field rather than pulling a LB or DB

I hear you on the big ugly in the middle but Coryea has said it best, Coach Tomlin uses 2 DL sets and a lot of times in the wrong scenario.

This definitely falls on Tomlin's shoulders. He has his lackey running the D but Tomlin truly runs it. When LeBeau was here, he knew what was what and how things should be. Tomlin wants to run more of a finesse D instead of being physical at the line and winning the line of scrimmage. Speed is good on D but you need power at the line. Defenses used to have 4 D-linemen. Then, some teams went to 3 DL with a LB coming from the edge (or somewhere) with more blitzing. But, you still had 3 dudes that were close to or over 300 lbs going against 5 300+ pounders. Now, Tomlin has 2 DL and 2 OLB's (sometimes only 1 with 3 total rushing) going against 5 300+ pounders and we are lucky if we have one of our guys being 300 pounds. Speed can win to a point but you need power up the middle. You need to not only hold the line but push it backwards into the pocket.

i get why we would go to this style defense when it comes to the Ravens. Speed on speed makes since to me. But when you watch random running backs almost always pick up short yardage on this defense, you just want to throw up.
 
We were tops in the league in rushing defense before Alualu, Bush, and Hilton went down mid season.

and QBs hate pressure up the middle the most. Cleveland uses a traditional running game, so that's the game to use the extra DL, and we had 6 or 7 dressed. Like when Highsmith went down, we were trailing, you know Cleveland is going to want to kill clock, why not bring a 3rd Dlinemen in there instead of Marsh at OLB who has been here for like 2 weeks?

We gave up 876 yards rushing in our last 7 games with AluAlu and Hilton, but I think the issue with 3 DL/2DL is more of a situational thing. Like how in anyones mind do you think it's good to used 2 DL primarily vs the Browns in the playoff game, after they just rushed for 192 yards the week before?
 
Tomlin believes NT is the same as fullback. Dinosaur. He rushes two interior linemen at defensive tackle (Tuit, Heyward and rotational players) OLB's are essentially Ends. They play more 43 then 34 defense

To be clear. Most of the league has gotten away from NTs and employ 2 DL sets for more athletic LBs and Ss

Finding a player like Casey Hampton is almost as difficult as finding a franchise QB, for many reasons.
1. Finding a player that size that was still able to drop into coverage when needed to execute the zone blitz scheme is few and far between.
2. Finding a player of that size that still has the quickness of feet to be able to take on 2 blockers and still get pressure is hard to find. A lot like Jerome Bettis, to be his size and still have quick feet and hips, those don't come along very often.
3. Most colleges are not running defensive schemes that require those type of players anymore.

Makes about as much sense as using the 2DL formation as a goal line defense...but we still did it.

This is true and the value of an Aaron Donald. He can be put into nose and clog run or rush the passer from a slightly different Tech. There will be a market for Alualu. If this team does not believe Buggs is ready to step up they better think about how much to pay Alualu or it could be another draft hole. I feel like the league should really look at its substitution rules. Another thing the league has done to screw defenses. Like if you got time to substitute your nose after first down, it would really change run stopping alignments.

teams also go with 3 DL-3LB-5DB's, alot of teams stick with at least 3 DL.
 
What I have never understood about the Steelers alignment is there is no strong week on the Dline, just left right. No cover/ boundary corner. Now maybe that is just American vs. Canadian Football, but for example, I always have a rush end on the strong side who has slightly different capabilities, trait and responsibilities then the week side player.
 
The Steelers have put pretty much zero effort in finding a stud NT since Hampton retired. The guy I want in this draft is Twyman. He isn't a pure run stuffer, but does a good job making plays in the backfield and is a good interior pass rusher.
 
Blitz, ........ have you gotten to the game where you throw the BRICK through the TV yet ?

I can’t agree with this, as they executed 3 man front heavily vs. running teams. That base 3-4 is what Titans caught us in when AJ Brown caught the long TD—Fitz misplayed the situation and was out of place — missed tackle and TD for TN

The NT of big snack days is extinct. There’s no Vince Wilfork either—since game is no longer about hitting , defensive players have to be more agile and fast
 
to me this is the biggest issue of our defense. We have a good to great secondary, 2 great dlinemen in tuitt and Heyward, TJ Watt who is all world, but none of it matters if an ordinary rb can get a random 2/3 yards.

we either change our defense scheme or pick up a true nose tackle

I hear ya..but one I dont belive our run defense was terrible....could it be better ...yes..

and two...our ILB's were below the mark after Bush went out..

I might add in who is the DC ? does Butler call the "D" and when things get narly does Tomlin take over or over-ride an agressive call?

That is as big a factor as anything.
