Eric Green was a decent pick for us.... over time of course hindsight is 20/20 .... so knowing what you know now ...one would have to say E. Smith

but if we are staying true to the draft ..... did anyone see that in Smith at the time..... I doubt many would say he was much more than a good talent...

Even after what E. Smith has accomplished over the years ......he would barely make my top 10 RBs all time list
 
Well the Steelers did draft Green, O'Donnell, Foster, and Jugs. That is a decent draft. The web wasn't around back then but I felt our #2 pick was a bust, and he was, and didn't want a TE in round one. The Steelers drafted a stiff in Worley ( 1989 ) who was just okay as a rookie. Taking E Smith would have changed the franchise.

You are an odd puppy. What number 2 pick are you thinking was a bust? And why not just say his name?

Kenny Davidson. Picked round two by the way,. Even big time homers like Bob Labriola sniffed out this bust in the making. . An undersized and underachieving player best suited for 4-3 end at a time we played hard core 3-4. As far reaching as this sounds, if we took Smith, Dallas might not have played us in a super bowl, and we might have won one during the 1990's.

Not sure anyone would have picked Green over Smith in hindsight. But Eric has some nice moments. I met him at one of the Steelers mafia's events nice guy...

Round 4, Pick 99, Houston Oilers - Eric Still, G, Tennessee

I grew up 5 doors down from him.
 
Going back in time is futile..... even if we had drafted E. Smith..... different team, scheme, chemistry.......whatever ........nothing guarantees he would have been the same player for us in terms of production.
It could have turned out as tragic as Gabe Riveira and the passing up on Marino.... Tragedy can strike at any time... each player could be subjected to a career ending injury whenever they stepped on the field
As a Steelers fan I would not want to alter the years of B. Foster and the Bus' time in Pittsburgh.

Eric Green was fun to watch, Barry Foster still holds the team rushing record.... and it wasn't like E Smith ran us over in the Superbowl .... 18 carries 49 yards (one carry was for 23 yards) 1 Rec 3yds
He did get into the endzone 2 times but with the OL they had in Dallas I would expect it to be tough to stop short yardage plays

Smith was a talented and durable player no doubt .... Eric Green was a mobile mountain with hands..... I can live with it....

That's the thing, DALLAS had the OL to power such a back. They used Emmett and that line plowed his way. True, Emmett had the talent but also aided by the OL.


ERIC green was absolutely amazing.

I would have much rather had Smith than Green in hindsight. Smith wasn't taken because the #7 pick the previous year was a running back Tim Worley. He was highly productive in college and merited a high pick, his problems was he wasn't into football. Drugs and thugging was his priority, and he was suspended for a whole year for failing to take 2 drug tests. He didn't mature until after he left the league. He's been a positive force and a public speaker since he found God, I just wish he found him earlier.

Honestly though Emmitt would have been a monster for us. Foster had killer years behind this line and was an Emmitt clone, minus the fact that Emmitt was a much superior pass catcher. The Steelers may have faired better in the AFCC game against San Diego, and Bam Morris had 70+ yards in the SB. If we had Emmitt he would have had over 100 easy.

Only big negative. If the Steelers had Smith, they never would have made a move for the Bus.
 
ALL good points Cope and I don't think EMMETT had the character the BUS did so there is a good point. I saw many a times Jerome taking a player off to the side and talking to him, in a good positive. I never saw Emmett in that roll as all I ever saw was the three, Emmett / Michael / Troy celebrating like they were above everyone else. Remeber though I was looking through my B & G glasses so there is that.

Now that you have gone and made us rewrite the history book.:topsy_turvy::topsy_turvy: Erased the memory of the Bus and our Superbowl run in 2005 in exchange for other possible fortunes with .Omit Smith
What about the 2000 draft..... Would you have passed on Tee Martin in the 5th and chosen the ball deflating Tommy Boy instead........... cringe.........

Damn ******* straight I would have. Just to keep Brady and NE apart.

But here's the mindbender. If we took Brady in the 5th and NE took Tee Martin in the 6th, would Tee have 6 SB rings...

Nah..... with a name like Tee he would have washed out early and joined Tiger as his caddy on the pro golf tour. Washing those balls was a full time job from what I hear.
