Report: Steelers' Villanueva may skip training camp

I guess it all depends in what he is looking for......I'm thinking if he wants more than $4.8 mill a year..way more.

He needs the extra time to get better. He is good enough to do OK, but can get better and he should get enough money to get into camp this year and let him play for a better contract.

He ****** himself with an agent. Al you are a good player and a war veteran. You will be well taken care of. Your agent trying to wring out the nickles and dimes wont work. Play the loyal soldier card and you will cash in just fine.

I think skipping camp would be detrimental to Big Al. He is still very young at the position and still needs to get better. Hawkins impressed last year before getting injured and if he gets the first team snaps and impresses, the Steelers may not be so inclined to meet Big Al's demands. He is taking a huge gamble if he doesn't show up. I hope he shows up and the Steelers offer him something respectable but they have all the leverage here if Hawkins looks good with first team reps.

I don't remember a player with stacked rights from year to year. This year an ERFA and next year an RFA?? I think the NFLPA needs to take care of these, because they are not in the players' best interest.

Though this means Villa has 2 years left with the Steelers, and they don't negotiate until 1 year is left, unless the player is a QB. A new contract will not happen for Villa this year. Next year? Perhaps.

What is a ERFA?

3 years 15 million 6 mill SB

They have to find a way to keep him.

The problem is that other teams see what he is developing into as well, which drives up his value.

There were not many LTs better than him last season, and he still has upside, given how new he is to the position.

As Cope said, Villa needs to show up and play. He is tied to this contract as is. He should look at it as he is playing for a BIG contract next year. Maybe the steelers could slip him some $$$ through his health and fitness buisness like the CHEATRIOTS do t*mmy b*y.................. Oh wait, Villa doesn't have a health and fitness buisness...................

Go to camp *******. Sick of this ****.

I can see the Rooney's side. Why pay if you don't have to. Al's under contract now git to gettin'

I can see Al's side. He's gettin' older and showing up to camp as a starting leftt tackle for $600K just doesn't make for a good retirement outlook or make good sense.

Somebody mentioned Hawkins. What would suck big time this season would be to watch Ben go down because an inexperienced player missed an assignment. Not worth the gamble in my mind. We may not have Ben that much longer and anytime spent on the bench will be wasted and painful.

IMO Al can be placated fairly easily with something fair and progressive. Something like 3-5M at first, working up in 4 or 5 years to a solid starter amount...whatever that is

I think Ben would agree with this. FO needs to get this done before camp.

I think he's benefited by being next to Foster. Ramon was graded by PFF in the top 50 of all NFL players recently. I wonder how the Steelers graded his play last year?

I watched a replay yesterday of the Raven's 2nd game last year and Al was pulling from his LT slot all the way to the right side and picking off the LOLBer to open a dump truck size hole for Bell. I didn't see anything to fault him on on any plays. ( but who am I..I know )

OK, I found it.

With 2 yrs of Steeler control left he has to realize some give and take here as AB did when signing his second contract. If he wants to hold out it is his right but he gains nothing to all in doing so .....hopefully it all works out for both sides.

I do have to say when AB signed his 2nd contract I thought he was way over paid....lol....weird how that all worked out.

He played well, don't get me wrong. I just think that Foster had more than a little to do with it:

http://pit.247sports.com/Bolt/Ramon-Foster-named-NFLs-best-left-guard-by-Pro-Football-Focus-51220659

"Pittsburgh’s offensive line had become the league’s best by the end of the season, and LG Ramon Foster was the best player on it," PFF said of Foster. "The former undrafted free agent was only getting better by the postseason, and was absolutely dominant against the Chiefs in the Divisional Round, allowing no pressure at all and destroying the Kansas City defensive line in the run game. Foster has graded well over the past several years, but he ended 2016 with an overall grade of 89.1, trailing only the best guard in the game, Baltimore’s Marshal Yanda."
