Kevin Colbert always looks to pull off some preseason wheelin’ and dealin’. And it sounds like he’s about to again. WR Ryan Switzer is reportedly about to be dealt to Pittsburgh. That comes from Yahoo’s Jordan Schultz, who sent this tweet out moments ago.

Switzer, a 4th round pick in the 2017 draft, was dealt from Dallas to Oakland in late April. He will fill a need as a slot receiver and return man for the Steelers, two areas the team has a need at.

Last year as a Cowboy, he averaged 25 yards per kick return and 8.8 on punts. One punt return went for a touchdown. He also caught six passes and carried the ball four times.

Developing story.

Looks like we finally have a competent, explosive kick/punt returner. I wonder what we traded to get him?

So we robbed them blind on the Bryant deal they are looking to get back at us

That made me laugh. :) We don't know what we're giving up for him, too early to tell who's getting the short end of the stick here. Seems the Steelers went after this kid, so they must like what they see.

We better not have given more than a 7th or something. Do we need returning that badly? Don’t they see deficiencies at LB?
Who knows if Colbert has something else up his sleeve. I'm just glad he's actively working to improve some weak spots, not having a legit return man was one of them.

Is Mack included in the deal? If not, it's lukewarm trade. 5 WIDE. . . ALL DAY LONG! How many WRs does this make it now? 44?

The question is what’s up with Gruden? He traded for Switzer early in his stint as the new coach. Is he still figuring out what he’s doing in this new era?

I think it might cost Patterson a spot though............

Looks like a swap of late round picks

Seems to me Tucker/Eli injuries sparked this move. They didn't have any other shifty, slot WR, return type guys beyond that.

Seems they'll keep 6 WR, with the 6th spot between Hunter/Patterson, which tells me they'll probably sign Patterson to PS.

I think this paves the way to keep Samuels over Touissant. Touissant seemed to be the only guy they trusted as a kick returner. Now he’s replaced with Switzer so his only other reason for sticking is that he’s reliable but not great at RB.

With Conner looking much improved, they can afford to take the raw Samuels over the dependable Touissant.

This is a great pickup IMO. He fills our return position needs and he can do that job at a very high level.
He also still has upside to develop into a nice slot WR. He has the skill set to do it and he's only entering his 2nd season in the NFL.

I'd guess return man.

Patterson had one nice preseason game and soem flashes in camp. However, best I can tell he has been quiet since. I agree, if he makes anything, its PS.

Some pre-draft notes from last year, Tomlin was supposedly high on this kid.

High-volume target for UNC QB Mitch Trubisky. Reliable pass catcher with low career drop rate. Sudden feet to shake press defenders out of his release. Plays at his top speed and doesn't coast. Accelerates and separates on speed outs. Utilizes repeatable footwork in routes. Patterns are crisp. Comes out of breaks at sharp angles and snaps head around immediately to find the ball. Owns comeback routes by driving hard back to the throw. Shows traits of effective option-route specialist in short-yardage and red area. Able to defeat inside leverage technique and find his way back underneath. Had five punt-return touchdowns his freshman season and has seven for his career, with 19 career returns of more than 15 yards.

Wes Welker and Julian Edelman have become go-to comparisons for undersized slot receivers who utilize option routes to torment defenders underneath, but Switzer isn't quite on that level. However, he's able to create separation underneath and shows quality release quickness. Switzer is a slot-only target with punt return skills, but he has to find the right scheme fit to become a factor in the NFL.

"I think I'm the best returner in the draft," Switzer said during a conference call after his selection. "I think Dallas knew that. I just finished my fourth year playing receiver at any level, so I think my background as a running back, my vision allows me to make things out of nothing happen. I'm also a tough guy. I take risks. I field punts that some guys usually wouldn't, which has allowed me to have success at the college level. Hopefully I can continue to have opportunities at the next level with it."

Switzer initially made his name at UNC as an elite punt returner, earning first-team All-America honors in 2013, tying the NCAA record with five punt returns for touchdown in a season. He then got to work honing his craft as a wide receiver, a new position for the shifty 5-foot-8, 181-pounder after playing running back in high school.

By the time his career was over in Chapel Hill, Switzer had set UNC records for career receptions (244), career receiving yards (2,907) and single-season receptions (96 in 2016). The four-time All-ACC performer also holds the ACC record for career punt returns for touchdown (7) and the UNC records for career punt return yards (1,082) and career punt return touchdowns.

Productive collegian who is a game-changer as a receiver and return specialist. Shows amazing quickness, easily beats defenders in the first five yards and makes them miss in the open field. Plays with balance and body control and easily adjusts or contorts to grab the errant throw from the air. Terrific route-runner who fires into breaks then stays low on exit, losing no momentum. Remains focused, concentrates and lays out for the difficult catch. Effectively runs underneath routes or crossing patterns and makes the reception in stride. Possesses next-level hand-eye coordination and a sense of timing and shows run-after-catch skill. Consistently extends to make the reception away from his frame. Game-changing punt returner.

Yup. Slot guy. Means Quadree is not making the team. Tucker is hurt, probably worse than anticipated, adn Eli is still 2-3mos away (now thanks to his suspension). That leaves us with no true 2nd slot. I'd hoped DHB or Patterson could fill that hole, but I like the move bringing in a returner.

We have no one. Quadree is the best we have, but he's still a year away from helping out on offense. This means Sutton is done on PR, and Toussant is done on KR. I like it!

Terrell Edmunds reacts to Steelers' Ryan Switzer trade
https://www.pennlive.com/steelers/index.ssf/2018/08/steelers_ryan_switzer_trade.html

PITTSBURGH -- In the first week of October two years ago, Terrell Edmunds heard plenty about Ryan Switzer from his coaches.

The then-Virginia Tech defensive back was preparing to play Switzer's North Carolina team on the road. Edmunds covered punts. He had to know Switzer's name and number, No. 3. It's how he described the former Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys return specialist to a teammate on Monday morning as Yahoo Sports reported the Steelers traded for Switzer.

"When he was at punt return he was the emphasis that week," Edmunds said. "So he can definitely do that."

Edmunds went on to recall that the 5-foot-10 receiver was largely shut down by Virginia Tech - two catches, two yards - but the Steelers first-round pick was excited to hear his former ACC rival would be joining him in Pittsburgh.

"That's lit. He's good. He's good though. He's good, he's good. He's a shifty guy. I ain't gonna say he did us in because he didn't do us in at Tech," Edmunds said. "We was low-key strappin', but he's definitely a shifty guy."
