I know in some cases obvious blown judgement calls could be easily rectified. However, after listening to a couple coaches discuss the application of the rule this year, some very disturbing end results may occur.

There is a real slippery slope the Comp Committee is allowing Replay to interfere with the flow of the game. As it stands right now, coaches can challenge a PI judgement call. What is stopping a challenge for a face mask, holding, and roughing the passer call? Basically it’s disrupting the flow of the game as well as the momentum by either team which had the advantage of that momentum.

Most importantly, and something that will be completely unacceptable, is that Al Riveron will be the second most powerful person in the NFL.

That’s right, the chief general of officiating for the league, who is supposed to by rules not to impact games, will be deciding controversial play in games related to judgement calls.

Opinions?

It's going to make it even more drawn out and boring. Reviewing the reviewed plays? What a stupid idea! I have an idea...get it right the first time.

Isn't the amount they are allowed tied into previous challenges allowed. Meaning they don't have additional challenges to use in a game?

If that be the case it shouldn't go any slower.

GREED is the father of change.

I see this as another way for the league to manipulate games. Take away the momentum a time or two or three and that game out come could be slanted.

Man, this game sure has changed from a very good team sport to a less than desirable game and all within the last 8 years.

Salute the nation

Anyone remember the days before replay? And when a call was blown and then the next day, the sun rose and life went on?

Until they can get the total time of a replay to take one minute or less I'm over it. It's taking away from the viewing experience.

The first season will be a disaster and will probably cost a team a chance at a championship. Certainly a playoff. Then they will take the offseason to see what worked and what didn't. That is the way it was in the CFL.

We win that ******* Saints game if we can challenge that bullshit ******* call on hayden. I don't give a **** if the ******* game takes an extra 20 mins if the goddamn refs at least get the calls right. Do whatever you need to in order to make sure the refs don't **** up a game.

Seems pretty simple, if we can see in HD at home the refs screwed the pooch on a **** call, then they should be able to overturn it. I don't give a **** how they do it, just ******* get it done.

The games have gotten longer and harder to watch. I'm all for getting the calls right but how do you do that without cluster ******* up the game for fans?

Pat and Jim have had a lot to say about this on "Moving the Chains" (NFL Radio) this off season. The short is what you said that despite last years issues, coaches really don't want this in their challenge wheelhouse. Of course, now that they have it you can bet they are going to use it.

I prefer the idea of an eye in the sky or ref in the booth. Something like the Chargers OT taking 3 steps before the snap that resulted in a free TD for them against us or the NO PI situation in the playoffs should be an easy pick up by an eye in the box. I would like that much better than the coaches being able to challenge. The problem is how do you limit the sky ref's powers. You don't want him stopping the game all the time. I'd like to think it can be done, but then I remember they can't even get a catch rule correct.

Correct Slash. They can lose or retain their challenge.......except at 2:00 remaining in each half. At which time, Czar Riveron will have the wide sweeping power determine when and IF a review occurs and WHAT that review determines. That is the chief problem I have.

This is the way it will role. The really bad calls will be fixed. To the better of the game. But every action...... there will be a bunch of bullshit calls in slow motion. You should only get one challenge. Reserved for a big moment on a big call. It cant become a strategy, which it will.

It is currently tied to the number of challenges, so if the HC wants to blow his challenges on PI's, I say let him have it. What are we talking about here, in reality, even if it's another 10 mins per game, which I doubt, as long as they get it right, I'll gladly take that 10 min hit. It's not like I can't eat wings and drink beer for 10 extra mins on Sunday, for ***** sake. :)

Time is not the issue t-man. I could care less if the game went an extra half hour. From my experience watching it implemented in the CFL and having refed myself for decades, there are ticky tack things that happen on almost every play. but if you slow things down with the technology they have it will be almost impossible to not commit PI. It is already difficult enough to play defense. Its like this, it sucks bad enough as it is. A ****** guy makes a great play, first you have to survive there being a penalty call, then you have to wonder if there is anything that might be challenged and finally when the extra point is kicked (or missed in the Steelers case) then you high five your friends as you watch the game. It takes all excitement and immediacy out of the game. Now could it have helped the Steelers against the Saints. Probably. Do you think it was implemented for the Steelers. No. It was based upon one play in the playoffs where the Saints felt butt hurt. guess what the Steelers have been jobbed like that a half dozen times since I've been watching them. In big moments too. Refing is a part of the game. So now what will happen come the first Sunday night game, Haden will make a great play to seal the win, and you will get excited and then they will challenge some bullshit bump halfway in the route. So all I can say is remember this thread man.

This is a good take. What are your thoughts on a Ref in the booth?

Bad calls are the problem, a bullshit bump being called and taking away the touchdown isn't the technologies fault. Maybe stop hiring ******* morons to be refs. Bottom line is this, the fans can see now more than ever when the refs make a bad call, and I can't think of one fan who is actually FOR a bad call. I'm not the guy sitting back making billions of dollars selling this sport to the fans, but I can say that the people who are should be trying to make sure this gets resolved as quickly as possible. And guess what, having part time refs isn't the way to go about it. So yeah, part of the problem is they have idiots doing the job, and the other part is technology has now caught up to the point where the fan at home can see the idiots making those mistakes. You tell me ANYONE thought that Haden call was a good call other than the ******** ref who made it.

Joe

Oh, and the "ticky tack" thing is sad too. I remember watching football even into the 90's and the announcers saying things like "when you hands get outside the defender that's going to be holding every time" then how many times did we watch Harrison get ******* collared on his way to the qb with nary a ******* flag in sight. If you called that now people would be yelling about it being "ticky tack" but back in the 80's and 90's that was a flag every damn time.

Really? I always remember games in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s, today taking 3 hours. How have games gotten longer?

Games are worse. No hitting the QB, no hitting a defenseless receiver, can't tell what a catch is, etc. Worse, but not longer.

Oh, I agree with the sentiment, but do you have any belief that the review officials would have reversed the call? I don't think so for a second. Would have let that call stand, the "judgment of the official."

And anybody who doesn't believe that certain teams benefit vastly more than others on these damn replays is living in a fantasy world.

Patsy receiver catches ball in endzone, drops it immediately thereafter on way to ground - TD

Steelers receiver catches ball, 2 feet down, knee down, ball moves when he puts it over goal line for apparent TD - no catch, no TD.
