remember when Sean Davis sucked?

Pumpkin Spice Cheerios for breakfast along with a tall Tomato juice. Tomorrow I will probably have scrambled eggs with toast. The point is one can change their mind along the way. Back when I wanted Eifert but today am VERY glad we didn't get him. It seems coach is held to a higher standard around here and some need to let a little of his post(s) enter one ear and fall out the other. Parts of his post(s) make great sense and parts not so much. Our job as readers is to cypher through and retain the parts we think are relevant. THAT can be said for nearly ALL here, believe it or not, including me. We are all brothers and sisters here with our commen interest on the BEST Message Board ever !!!!

Here's to our beloved STEELERS and the best combination of players & coaches that translates to positive outcomes...!!!!!!!!

Salute the nation

I find it hard to imagine Sean Davis is playing that poorly when we have (collectively) allowed only 389 yards passing on 40 of 67 passes (5.8 YPA), 9 sacks and only 27 points allowed.

Look, it's against bad quarterbacks... I get that. But Jesus, it's been two games.....

Its ok to have opinions and if you man enough to post them be man enough to say some of them were wrong.

We need more data. It seems to me that Davis hardly breaks up passes or intercepts them, and more often than not tackles his man after he gets open.

The data I posted said he grades poorly on their system. And like you said we did not face good WR's or QB;s so far.

With one of the best pass rushes in the NFL, and better corner play, you'd think he should be able to make some plays. I have said before he is good on the blitz.

Wrong! I said Burns has size, great hands and ball skills. My issues with him coming out was he was raw. Show me where I said Burns was a bust. If you can't then you mis spoke and should say so.

so, antdrew did the heavy lifting looking for your quotes and I know there's more buried around, so well there it is, Burns lacks speed, COD, etc. You said you would bump the post when Tomlin called out the growing pains on Burns, why don't you bump it to admit you were wrong?

Look, obviously he was raw compared to others but potential is worth a lot more than readiness coming out of college, you know, high ceiling- low floor vs high floor-low ceiling. I didn't love it either on draft day and I made it known here as I thought we reached a bit and could have gotten the trade and still Burns later in the 1st. But I already ate my crow, the kid has not only the talent but the capacity to learn fast and be an integral part of the Defense. Kudos to the Steelers for recognizing the talent and drafting him.

Regarding Davis well, don't say you didn't hate him, he wasn't a gamble, he was a S that had to play CB in college because of injuries and you completely destroyed him using his CB tape as if he was drafted by the Steelers to play that position. He is a Safety with some experience in coverage thanks to that season playing CB in college. You completely missed what was expected of him and what were they looking for.

which coach refuses to do

Let's look at it this way. If there are 11 starters on defense, where do you think Davis rates? 10th best? 9th best? You tell me. The only player I think he's better than for sure is Vince Williams.

I posted 3rd party data which neither you or I control that point to his play being below average...and om this topic I think 3rd party opinions are best.

You said I called Burns a bust. Man up, I never said that!

Did I say he lacks speed? I said it could be an issue, we'll see. Try quoting me right.

His long-term coverage speed to me could be an issue. He's neither fast nor slow, but does he have catch up speed when burned in the NFL? We'll see. - Coach on Burns when drafted

I did say no way Davis can play the slot. He was a disaster there in camp. Who was correct?

I also said I question Davis's ball skills a bit. He dropped two easy INT's ( one you could have caught vs the Jets ) as a rookie and made VERY few plays on the ball in terms of passes defended with just five for the season, which included two dropped int's. So far this year he has yet to defend one pass. Most of the other DB's have, and some DL and LB's have broken up passes. Other players have tackles for a loss. Davis has yet to make one splash type of play. I know only two game, we'll check back in after 4 games and see where the players rate.

My issues with Davis is he's not a coverage or ball skills guy. I do like him on the Blitz. I get tired of safeties who allow passes then tackle.

i could not give a **** less about what someone thinks who doesn't watch the games. but, I guess that's silly since you don't watch games. and have admitted as much.

Are you, of all people, telling me to man up? GTFOH
Maybe you used the word, maybe you didn't, still your bitching clearly implied it so please stop with the BS

I wouldn't say he the 9 or 10th. Like you said small sample. Id lump him, Burns and Gravedigger close. I think he might be more dangerous than Mitchell. We dont really know what Watt and Chickillo are. Dupree is hurt a lot. Only guys I know he is behind are Shazier, Heyward , Tuitt.

You need more data? You didn't have any his rookie year and slammed him weekly. Talking about missed tackles (which every other starter had more). Now you say you need more data to what? You already have an opinion of him. We know that will never change. Quit wasting our time.

If you are saying his speed could be an issue, then you are implying.....his speed isn't a positive. It's called analogy. You analyzed his speed was suspect. Therefore questioned whether he had enough of it for the position.

You say you are correct that Davis couldn't play the slot last year. Even though he wasn't drafted for the position. He was drafted for the safety position. He was given opportunities at corner BECAUSE of his college performance and the fact there was a lack of heathy bodies.

Hey I'm correct in saying you could never work in a professional front office. You refute?

Yet to defend a pass? Read the posts...there has only been 4 in two games at the DB position, with only 1 at safety (Mitchell). He DOES currently lead the team in tackles (10) because he plays closer to the line as a box safety. But that must be wrong because you say he can't tackle. Tell us how many were TFL? You won't because you've made up your mind.

You are using his play from 2016 as indicative of his interception ability this year. Give it a rest. Better yet, you do the research and give us the box score of how many passes were thrown to his AOR and how many completions were made.

Your nickname should be Whirlpool, because you wash/repeat the same thing constantly. All the while admitting you don't watch games or film.

Not to beat a dead horse...

Dead horse.....has been long gone for some time.

I'd say that horse has long since been buried beneath several other dead horses who have long since been buried (if you ascribe to Dwight Schrute's method of horse burial) underneath the dead horse which is currently beat regularly

Everyone looks better as the talent around them gets better. Just rushing the passer and stuffing the run helps the secondary out immensely. You're not hanging on an island for days as (insert any scrub qb) carves you up because he has all day to throw. Stuffing the run without having to move 8-9 guys in the box frees up your secondary to do their job.

In a nutshell....it all starts at the line.

The other thing is that, there have been several "coverage sacks". That doesn't happen if our DB's aren't doing their jobs.

The SS along with the linebackers are generally responsible for covering TE's and RB's. Usually rarely covering
WR's. Against Vikings TE's and RB's caught 9 balls for 54 yards. 1 of those went for 27, so the other 8 went for another 27,
a 3 yard average. That is pretty good coverage and tackling.

coach there seems to be a disparity on what you watch game wise. So can you go on record to bring clarity to the issue.

Do you watch

A- every game of the season

B- every game through its entirety

C- all games but sometimes shut the game off before the end

D -some games but when you do you watch the complete game

E- some games, sometimes finish them

please answer if a combination between A and B

or C or D or E

thank you

Very good post, definitely there's an elite group lead by heyward, shazier and tuitt, then you have promising talent like Davis, burns, dupree, hargrave, watt of course. Also you have solid vet Haden and finally a group of capable vets like gay, Mitchell and Vince. This guys would be the lowest graded players yet they do their job in a reliable way most of the time, putting Davis here is just ignoring his ceiling
