For those who grew up Catholic, you know the song featured in the title.

Well, that how I feel reading this piece.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...m=newsletter&utm_campaign=pittsburgh-steelers

Instead of always sticking to a 3-4, Butler says he will fit the D to the players, not the other way around, and that, they will be more of a hybrid and often in sets that are more like a 4-3.

THAT is music to my ears.

This is more evidence that Dick was too old and stuck in his ways and that hurt this D.

Butler also said they will be getting much younger, and quickly.

This is music to my ears.
I would consider myself a whatever-it-takes-to-win guy. If it’s a 3-4, that’s fine, if that fits your players. I think you have to be able to fit your defense around the players you have. With what offenses are doing nowadays in the National Football League, they’re playing a lot of three wide receivers and a tight end and a running back, for the most part. In those situations, we’re going to be in kind of a 4-3 anyway, but we’re still going to be able to run the 3-4 also. It gives you a little bit more versatility, I think.

I don't know that most defenses the last few years even really fit any kind of traditional 3-4 or 4-3 definition anyway. It seems like most teams switch personnel out on every down and seldom run their "base" defense anyway.

Well what fits this defense is whichever one they can run that has them running around like chicken little and making little to no crunch-time plays.

Talent is needed thru free agency and the draft. For a SB run they will need better talent on that side of the ball.

Well, most Ds were a hybrid, but not ours. Dick was known for staying strictly 3-4 as much as possible. Butler has immediately indicated they will be far more hybrid. He also said he would focus on upgrading CB and finding a legit edge pass rusher immediately. That is great news. Dick should have known to do this but was too out of touch.

Hasn't our defense played primarily out of the nickel for the past two years? Butler can talk all he wants, but I still don't see any pass rushers on this team.

Bottom line, 3/4 or 4/3 one thing you must have, the hoses! Our DL is trending toward solid with lots of promise. The LB group is not in such great shape with the OLB positions in question. Worrilds status up in the air and Jones in entering make or break season for him. Solid at ILB with Timmons, Williams and Spence but still unknown with Shazier. CB positions a disaster with just patchwork pieces in place, career backups and Cortez whom I have never been impressed with enters make or break season as well. Safety, could be adequate with the pricey Mitchell if he learns the defense in his 2'nd season but Troy's spot will be the question so hopefully Shamarko can lay claim to it.

I think we definitely need to be active in F/A to try and find an OLB especially if Worrilds leaves and we must find a solid CB that can start day one and not some 3'rd tier guy like McCain either. We need a solid starter and draft another in round 1 or 2 depending on what happens with Worrilds. Butler will only be as good as the quality of his players. Lebeau didn't forget how to coach, he had the worst secondary and no rush LB'ers to work with. Its amazing he got as much as he dis=d from that group.

Without pass rushers in the receiver friendly NFL, well let's all watch incredible consistent Defensive suckage.

Maybe he can teach them how to tackle? Watching guys half *** (or half fast) arm tackle while trying to take a swipe at the ball is painful to endure. If you combine that with playing 10 yards off the ball it adds up to being a really crappy defense. no mas!!!!

Heck yes, attitude is there. Dick never said anything like that. KB will put his stamp on the "D" as he won't want to be known as Dick L.'s boy. I had hoped they would go outside the organization, but now that the choice has been made, I'll take Keith Butler.

Salute the nation

About ******* time mix **** up brady rivers dalton flacco all are to familiar with our formations and whose coming from where, its about time we start showing different looks, i would love to see us use a similar set the giants use as thier nickel not that stupid nascar set where they have 4 de and when the qb audibles and calls a draw they got smashed.

I believe he actually mentioned that adding a legit edge rusher was mandatory. That, and an upgrade in CB.

Let's give the guy a chance. He may totally agree with us.

You're not including the Irish Catholics, are you?

you know what they say about them

There is nothing that indicates this will happen. Why would the pay premium price for a player who can't deliver premium play??

Panic move? Offer vs demand?
Really hope it doesn't happen but it has before

Once you go Big Snack, you never go back.
I don't think we have the talent to run a 4-3, although it could be argued that we don't have the talent for the 3-4 either (oh!.....).
Unless there are big changes on the roster on the D side of the ball...shoot, we only have one good DL, let alone four.
That said, I don't care if Butler runs a 6-1 or a 1-6 as long as it works.

Tagged him last year.
Max Starks
Cortez Allen
Mike Mitchell

Not saying it will happen, but it will not surprise me at all if they feel forced to make a ridiculous move because they have no depth.

Agreed, there's very few men that could replace Hampton (and aaron smith for that matter). So why try? Gotta be versatile w/ your system.

Why try? Versatility doesn't mean finding lesser talent at every position and trying to win with it. If this team stays the same as it is now with no upgrades then they won't win anything... ever. I'm glad the Steelers kept trying to find great players even if they had great players before them. You always try to get better talent.

Somebody suggested a 4-2 lineup. That sounds exciting.

The 4 - 2 - 5. (I know... the nickel...)

We DARE you to run up the gut!

Timmons might be solid enough to man the ML position in the 4-3 but I don't have faith in any of our other linebackers frankly to make it work. The D-line has maybe 1 guy who could seriously serve as a dominant line player capable of both rushing the passer AND containing the run while beating his man single-handedly 8 out of 10 times. (I strongly stress "Maybe".) Which means the D Line is not up to the task of being a dominant 4-3 line.

Our Cornerbacks and safeties will have to be better since the weaknesses on the line and the secondary right now mean that they'll be under fire will those positions are upgraded. Unfortunately we are even weaker in the secondary. Frankly, the only thing the defense had going for it was the element of surprise. The fact that the offense "may not know" where a blitz was coming from was their best advantage. How many of those guys could beat a starting player opposite them next season? Seriously?

Just one on one... How many could win that matchup hands down?
