The Rams stunned the football world on Monday afternoon by firing head coach Jeff Fisher. The move comes just a few months after handing him a two-year contract extension, which he signed just before the start of the 2016 season.

The 58-year-old has been the team's head coach since 2012. In that time, Fisher has compiled a 31-45-1 record with no playoff appearances. A Fisher-led team has not had a winning record since 2008, when he coached the Titans to a 13-3 record.

On Thursday, the Rams (4-9) travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks.

Fisher seems to have left the Rams no other choice. Amid reports of dissention between the front office and coaching staff, the team was throttled by the Atlanta Falcons at home on Sunday, 42-14. That followed a 14-10 loss to the Dolphins, a 49-21 loss to the Saints and a 26-10 loss to the Patriots where the team barely managed to cross midfield.

"Making a decision such as this -- especially during the season -- is one of the most difficult in sports," said Rams Owner Stanley Kroenke. "I have great respect for Jeff as a coach, person, father and friend.

"He has worked tirelessly despite some challenging circumstances. He played an integral role in helping this team make history in returning the NFL to Los Angeles, and we always will be grateful for his commitment and dedication to our organization.

"However, this is the right time to make a change as our performance has not lived up to my or our fans' expectations. We all are focused on improving as an organization and building a team that makes Los Angeles proud. Our mission is to celebrate a Super Bowl title with our fans in Los Angeles. Today is the first step to bringing us closer to that goal."

Around The NFL will have much more on the firing momentarily.

Wasn't used properly in L.A.

Good.....I'm a Steeler fan in Los Angeles & grew up watching the Rams....I loved them but they were always my second team.

When they left LA I refused to support them. Now that they are back I want to see them do well....

To be honest, Los Angeles fans will only follow a team rabidly when it is winning.....They HAVE to win and quickly.....

Same with Ryan. I see no purpose in firing a guy with three weeks left in the season. Why so you can get a look at an interim. If you were curious about an assistant in your organization, What will you learn in three weeks? The most sought after are usually on the market midway to the end of the playoffs. I think it just looks stupid and there is no advantage to it. Now the Rams have to play in essentially three days and one of them is travel. Maybe you should look at the whole institution if that is the way you operate.

Those who stay will be champions. Go Blue. Harbaugh isn't leaving AA. He's got unfinished business there.

I think Fisher was doing as good as can be expected. They still have to get skilled receivers on offense, but they have a QB and RB. And I like their front 7. He got that crappy team to win their home opener in LA. That's about all you can do with their current talent. They were drafting high next year anyway. They should be competitive for the next coach, and they will reap the benefit of the foundation laid by Fisher.

Wonder if they will go "retread" or fresh hot young up n comer. Likely the latter

Might see Josh McDaniels get another look. Haley might get a look even. Gruden's name will come up for damn sure.

He's a below average coach that got kept way too long.

They do? Gurley started off well as a rookie (1,000 yards, 4.8 ypc) but this year he ain't doing so hot, 3.3 ypc.

And Goff? Nowhere even near a given that he will be good. I know, I know, he is only a rookie, but still: plenty of highly touted QBs have been busts.

DaMarcus Russell, Leaf, Shuler, Akili Smith, David Carr

Absolutely stunning that Fisher was able to keep a job that long. Kinda wish he was there at least one more week to own the all-time losing record.

I still don't understand why they didn't bring in a new coach before the season. Now whoever they hire is stuck with a No. 1 QB who he didn't get a chance to draft and no first-round pick this year.

As a side note, it's still lame LA has a team. Is anyone even going to go to the games because I'm not sure anyone is really watching them on TV.

Tomlin to the rams for a 2nd and a 5th.

cmon maneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

no way the rams would give up that much for Tomlin
