Quarterback Scouting Thread

@bermudasteel i know others have eluded to what you’ve said about Ty Simpson but I’ve missed it.

As somebody whose probably seen every snap he’s ever taken in college what’s your verdict?

Simpson looked good in the first half of the season ( for the most part). Made the reads, accurate throws, and ran well. He held on to the ball and took sacks though, he was trying to do too much, especially on third down when there wasn't any open targets.
After the debacle at FSU his completion avg was 75+ for the next 6 games dropping to around 61 for the rest of the regular season.
I think some of his struggling was Oline related and he looked tired and frustrated in some of the last few games.
Looked a little lost in the SEC Championship Game and Playoff.
Does not throw interceptions.

I have read about potential accuracy issues. I have also read multiple times about him getting injured, and that definitely played a part in his issues in the last few games of the season. He is a project QB, no matter how you slice it. He is not coming in to start in year 1. He needs an environment with good coaching, mentoring, and training where he can sit for a year or two. He also needs that first offseason (after this season) to truly rest and also train for the upcoming season. Right now, he is just focused on getting drafted and not necessarily doing real things that will truly help him in games during his first year.

The Steelers are VERY familiar with Simpson. I've read multiple times where the Steelers had people at his games at least several times during the season so they saw how well he looked earlier in the season. They very well could pick him in the first round if they liked what they saw prior to his injury. Nothing would surprise me as I'm not sure how things will take shape now that Tomlin is gone.

Not really a fan of anyone except Mendoza.
And we don’t have a shot at that kid..

Leave the quarterback position alone in the draft, maybe spend a sixth or
seventh rounder on Fagnano out of Connecticut or sign him as a free agent after the draft.

In my humble opinion, Rogers does not return and the Steelers sign one of the free agent guys out there to get them through another year…

I’m with you except for the free agent part. Roll with Howard and endure. Just like last year, we are not a FA QB away from a Super Bowl. Get a pick that puts you in position for a franchise QB next year.

My problem with Simpson and just about every QB in this draft is the same I had with Pickett. Upside. I see a bunch of guys who can be game managers. I don’t want to spend a high pick on that.

Beck and Allar have the traits and pedigree. With an offensive head coach who has developed QBs, I wouldn't be pissed if they got one of them. First round pick, though, I think they need to trade up for one of the OSU defenders.

It will be interesting to see the medicals on Beck, a lot of reports say his arm strength was really diminished after his surgery. Hence the INT in the Natty vs Indiana. I have no idea myself. Personally, I didn't like the fact he avoided the post-game handshake but that's me.

I read an article about Simpson. It referred to his initial success as a result of no one really seeing him. After teams got some film on him, they picked apart his tendencies and his positives and negatives as a QB. The article said that teams adjusted the last half the season and made him look bad as a result. It never said anything about an injury or the oline, but those could have been part of it as well.

In this draft, I think it's Allar in the 1st or wait until rd 5 for a guy like Sawyer Robertson. Big QBs with arm strength. Other than that, trade for some extra picks for next year and try again.

I still don’t see it. I haven’t seen one person predicting him in the top 2 rounds. He would have to really light up his workout throwing and ven then his tape is going to knock him down a few rounds. Last year he would have been a first.

The Steelers like Simpson, but do they love him enough to take him in the 1st? They liked his interview today and scouted him several times prior to his injury. So, there is definitely something there. Allar does have the physical gifts you want, but I can't see anyone touching him in the 1st or even 2nd round. If he is there in the 3rd or 4th, I can see the Steelers snagging him or another QB they may like.

Haven't been around for a minute. But, please enlighten me as to what makes Allar even a consideration in the 1st. Are we talking about his strong arm and that he can make any NFL level throw? So could Jeff George, and a host of strong arm college QBs who had better success in college than Allar and were either "meh" or "OH MY GOD!" terrible. Decision making and processing did not seem to be a strong point of Allar"s in any season.
First round ... God I hope they don't!!

Well, everyone had Cheddar Sanders going in the first. These predictions are worth about as much as what anyone here says. It’s all a guessing game. Nobody really knows for sure.

I’ve seen others bring it up…is Mason on the way out? Khan and McCarthy have talked Rodgers and a ton about Howard. Rudolph isn’t even mentioned.
Would make sense. I think they draft a QB somewhere and I think they will give Howard a longer look and probably AA Ron is returning.

So that leaves the light on for one departure.

Reminds me of a song wanna here it here it go:

Then on one foggy NFL draft eve Rudolph came to say, “Steelers drafted a quarterback,
doesn’t look like I”ll be back”

Oh how all Steelers fans loved him and they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the Pittsburgh Steeler he’ll go down in hist orrr y.

Mason is that egg in the basket, until that basket get’s crowded as he will be the first to go.

He is the insurance policy through FA and Draft, see what happens.

You hold him and then trade if that opportunity is the one that comes along.

Garrett Nussmeier spoke at the combine. He was dealing with an oblique injury all year that affected his ability to throw. I know he's not the prototypical size people want, but he's worth considering.

I want to watch all these QBs throw at the combine, but I'll be more interested in where QB coach Arth goes on the pro day circuit and who they bring in for the top 30. The combine is nice though as you can see them all in one place, right after one another.
