A whole lot of fans over the years have wanted Ben's departure/ouster but for those of us that recall those 'lean' years....well, we have been in no rush to relive them.

So many, many "lean" years. This new generation of fans has grown up with a more entitled attitude towards positive post-season outcomes. From what 82 through 95-96 postseason wasnt a thing. From there forward it was bit or miss. Then Ben was drafted. The legacy of his career is rubber stamped by the expectations placed his replacements. The chance of drafting any round QB that's going to collectively wow the very picky fan base is next to zero. I only hope we get it right quickly. Defenses fade waiting for that[B/] QB.

UMmmmmm, I think Cowher took over in 92 and made 6 straight AFC North titles (or maybe playoff births, can't remeber), just letting yaz know. I also think he tied or set new record for consecutive titles / play off by rookie coach. I hope I've got this right as I'm going out of memory.

Yeah, I remember believing with O'Donnell we had found our guy. He was very consistent & had a penchant for not throwing picks until the biggest game of his life happened. 92 - 97 were magical years. Although there were some playoff seasons here and there 80 - 91 were pretty dark times overall.

Even in those year, the QB situation was up and down. You could still win with stiffling, physical defense and a pound the rock running game. Not so much anymore. The league is so very pass heavy now.

AFC North titles are nice but they arent the big dance. You know we were getting very crotchety waiting and waiting.

Okay and maybe in my 2020 hindsight I've stretched those years to include my mourning between RW departure and the BUS filling that dark empty space that Woodsen left.

I don’t remember the Steelers ever having a “real” QB controversy.... maybe Joe Gilliam (before he threw his career away to drugs) vs. Bradshaw....

Any other time they all sucked so bad we were screwed whoever was on field ....

I would agree. there wasn't much QB controversy as much as just trying to find the next guy. It took 20 years and there were some definite highs with NO and even KS for a bit. But damn, those were some rough years. Like I said though, in those days you could win with a mediocre QB when you had guys like M. Hodge and Eric Greene and Capt. Kirk and Avoid the Lloyd and Rod. Today, today it is much harder to do without an elite QB. It isn't impossible, just a lot harder.

The other QB controversy was determining whether or not Kordell Stewart was a QB.

There isn’t a QB controversy now. Two ****** QB’s trying to pilot a completely wounded offense. Add the rotten and utterly stupid play calling and you get what we have right now. No one is set up for success in this stupid offense.

This is the best analysis I have heard about our situation.

I've never been in a situation as a Steelers fan to say "and our bad coaching" until Tomlin. Kind of odd. Now I know how the rest of the league feels.

I totally hear what you are saying but in the post I quoted you said 82-95 or 96 post season WASNT a thing and I was just clarifying that we did make post season play. Also Cowher wasn't just one and done (I haven't looked up his post season stats). Also in 95 he went to the super bowl.

I realize you know all this but I never insinuated that AFC north titles were enough to satisfy but was just stateing we did a lot of post season with in your time frame and COWHER was one hell of a GREAT young coach at the time.

SORRY as I didn't see this post before I posted other one. I totally get the "seemed" like forever ratio as Cowher would get close but QBing would be our downfall.

I grew up through the "SUPER STEELERS" era when it wasn't a question of hoping for a win as we took it for granted that we'd win. NOTHING like today's team. Good stuff and I enjoy today's team but dislike all the controversy associated with it, the wNwFeL

he wasn't, but you couldn't convince him of that.
Ironically to this day you can't convince Slash of that. My boy has a HOF type career sitting there in the palm of his hands at a unique hybrid position but had his heart set at being a QB. If I remember it was a money thing- potential earnings at QB.

Korky still gives me nightmares.

Kent Graham
Dumbzak
46 wins / 29 losses for his Steelers career. In 97 he had 21 TDs and 11 rushing TDs on the ground. For all his issues he still had plenty of wow moments. Fans want to focus in on the bad. But as Slash man he was something special. His completion percentage was mediocre, his fumbles and Ints were too high. Buy from an athletic perspective man pure excitement.

He ****** up bigly imo. "Slash" was becoming a household name. I don't doubt he could have had a HOF career. No one could do what he could. A throwback player that played multiple positions. I remember Cowher even sending him in to punt.

Mason arm and size just has the look of a prototype thinking the comparisons for mason prototype height and arm strength of a prototype but his ceiling might limited due to mobility and with devlin you have a more mobile qb, more accurate and makes wiser decisions.
Sounds lkike if a QB controversy Rob Johnson vs Flutie but MT has decided to not go the wade Phillips idiot route as he saw he cant roll out or hit guys in stride was a great decision pull him even screens to Samuels were 2 ft over his head or wide.
