Sucks about Campbell leaving Toledo. But, the MAC was/is a training ground for a lot of the top end coaching talent in college football.

It was only a matter of time, just surprised that he is going to Iowa State, which is a real tough place to win. You would have figured a job like Virginia or Maryland would have been better options and better chances of success.
He said earlier in the year he liked the challenge of taking a program that is considered a place where you can't win or compete with the big boys and turning it into a winner.

And sorry to hijack the thread, but this move can't be a surprise for Penn State. When you have regression from the quarterback, who arguably wasn't all that good in the first place, a move was almost necessary. Franklin is a fantastic salesman for the program and recruiter, but seems like he needs an excellent X's and O's guy to help coach them up. Will be interesting to see what type of move they make.

I think Hack would look a lot better if he had Bill O'Brien for four years...Franklin and Co. ruined him...
agree with the rest...I'm pretty disappointed with Franklin...but I see your point about the X's and O's.
at the end of yesterdays blowout, the talking heads were really slobbering on the prospects for next year's season....

Franklin has been disappointing in terms of gameday coaching for the past two years. But most of that has been on the completely hapless, punchless offense. Granted, Hack often can't hit the broad side of a barn, has no instinct or feel for the position, and takes way too many sacks. But that offense was designed and called in such a pathetic fashion, this move had to be made. The route concepts had no creativity - it was like each route for each play was pulled out of a hat. It didn't seem as though any receiver's route was meant to pull defenders in any direction to get anyone else open. Just pure chaos. And then the play sequencing, situational football was just as bad. No awareness of down and distance, game situation, etc. This move had to be made or else JF wasn't going to make it much longer.
I don't think his job was in jeopardy THIS year, but if the offense continued to be as pathetic as it has been the past two years, he would probably have two more seasons. He had to do it

The Nit. Lions need a good OL coach as well. Hack get his brains beat in every week ... some of it is on him, as he holds the ball too long, waiting for something to open up, but something like 44 sacks last year and I don't know how many this year ... those aren't all on him.

Franklin is in no danger of losing his job. This was the worst year in terms of the effect of sanctions and 2016 may be similar. When sanctions hit, PSU had a team loaded with lots of experienced upperclassmen. That weathered the storm for a few years.
Hack has gone backwards but that's not on him or Franklin. His freshman year, he was great. That year he had 3 OL who are now in the NFL. He had Allen Robinson and he had Jesse James. They also had a really good defense.
As a sophomore, his OL was down to Donovan Smith who was good at LT and then a bunch of low recruits and guys switched from defense. It was a disaster. He also lost Robinson and had to depend on a bunch of young WRs
This season, the OL lost Donovan Smith and the spare parts that comprise the OL were even worse than last year. No more Jesse James who helped the OL a lot. All the TEs on the roster now are receivers. None can block. The WRs are all fresh and soph. Some are blue chippers but they make tons of mistakes. They can't get off press coverage.
Penn State's defense fell apart late due to injuries. They had the nations leading sacker and he missed the last 2 games as did their best DB. Their best LB was lost for the season in like week 2.
They do not have a full 85 scholarship players. They may on paper because they gave some schollies to some of the walkons but they only have about 60 recruited players and most are underclassmen.
They can't tackle in practice because they can't afford an injury.
The OC, Donovan wasn't that good. The plays were predictable and didn't fit together. I believe Franklin took over playcalling in a few games. Having said all that, it would have been tough for anybody to succeed with that much going against them.
PSU is on the right track but it may take another year to get whole and for the young guys to emerge as playmakers. The good news is RB Saquan Barkley is a stud.

I agree with all this, except your assessment of Hack's freshman year. He was decent, and showed flashes of greatness at different times, but was often erratic with his accuracy. He finished 65th in QB rating and only had 58% completion. And that's with a couple REALLY good games. So outside of those really good games, he was pretty much below average. And that's with BOB calling the plays, the actually talented offensive line you referred to, and Allen Robinson playing out of his mind.
Also, PSU's defense in 2013 was beyond bad. I don't know how you remember it as good. That's the same defense that gave up 63 to OSU and had everyone screaming for Butler's head on a spike.

I meant Hack had a great year for a freshman. He showed a ton of potential and O'Brien didn't ease him in. He had him in empty backfield 5 wide in game 1.
The 2013 defense was good but they had no depth and Butler was an in over his head. He was needlessly aggressive. I remember people would complain about Tom Bradley's bend don't break philosophy. Fans wanted splash plays and intimidation instead of consistently finishing as one of the top scoring defenses in the nation. Butler gave them their wish and they didn't like it much. Interesting that O'Brien took Butler with him to Houston. He must like him.
The point i was making about Hack is that he has shown he has the ability to be a good pocket passer. The problem is PSU needed a scrambler behind the terrible OL the last 2 years. A pocket passer like Hack had little chance.
It will be interesting if Hack decides to go pro. Most assume he will but if they hire an OC with NFL experience maybe Hack stays. It will depend on the draft grade he gets. He may still be a 1st round pick even with the lack of numbers. That's because so many of the college spread QBs bomb in the NFL. Hack is one of the few pro style college QBs with the NFL arm to match.

Supposedly Maryland will have big money to spend. The founder of Under Armour is a MD alum and he wants to make Maryland the Oregon of the east. You know, the exciting team with ugly uniforms that can't win the big one.

His draft stock is at an all-time low right now. Some team may get fascinated with his build and workouts, but I don't know if I take him any higher than the third right now.
Richt would be a great fit for South Carolina and I'm sure Miami will make a big push to bring him in. How are Maryland's facilities? They already seemed like an afterthought in football, but really seem that way in the Big 10 where they are overshadowed by just about every other team outside of maybe Rutgers.
I've seen day 2 pick for Nassib, but that was earlier in the season. Some team is going to be very happy to pick him up.

I think the only way he isn't a first rounder is if his workout numbers are really bad. I don't expect that. Nassib has everything the NFL wants in pass rushers. He is 6'6 with long arms and has a high motor. He was a walk on at PSU because he only weighed like 220 coming out of high school. He grew and worked out a ton to build his body. NFL teams will love that work ethic too.
He's white so no doubt you will hear Watt comparisons, but he's not that powerful. It will be interesting to see if he does LB drills at the combine. He may be athletic enough to play 3-4 OLB.
His brother is former Syracuse QB and current Giants backup Ryan Nassib.
Reports are in that UH and Tom Herman have "agreed in principle" on a new deal to keep him in town
