Hi guys,

I'll be putting these out weekly during the preseason, until the final roster is set. They will fluctuate from week to week due to injuries, game performance, and playing time. I'll keep updating in this thread so we don't have to have multiple threads going on. These articles also appear on the Steeler Nation news page below, which I have added to my daily Steelers reading schedule.

https://www.steelernation.com/anyalsis-talent-depth-chart-wr/

This is what I see for depth currently, before training camp starts (Rostered players in bold):

LWR (X) Brown, Antonio, – Hamilton, Cobi – Heyward-Bey, Darrius – Ayers, Demarcus – Tucker, Marcus

SWR (Y) Rogers, Eli – Smith-Schuster, JuJu – Ayers, Demarcus – Tucker, Marcus

RWR (Z) Bryant, Martavis – Hunter, Justin – Coates, Sammie – Heyward-Bey, Darrius

Out/Cut: Canaan Severin was released on Tuesday.

I’ve placed the receivers with size on the Right (Z), and the quicker smaller receivers on the Left (X). Our slot guys are set (Y). I think the Steelers keep 6 WRs this year with a proposed emphasis on 4WR sets.

For the x receiver position, Antonio Brown is a lock, being arguably the top receiver in the league. Behind him, Cobi Hamilton just made a play to make the team. His consistent work in practice translated to the 2 best plays in this past week’s preseason game. The deep ball catch Cobi made, was the play of the game. Fully outstretched, using all of his size to pull in that pass. He still body catches a bit much for my taste, as evidenced by his TD catch, but he is effective and healthy. Right now he has the nod

The slot is starting to solidify. Eli Rogers shows he can still run routes and get open. JuJu also showed that he’s willing to do what he can to help this team. Whether it’s running routes, blocking, playing special teams, or making tackles on interceptions, he is a football player who was well worth the pick. He’s not making the team because he’s a second round pick. He’s making the team because he’s a special athlete, who will give his all, whenever he is on the field. Ayres being injured has knocked him way down in the pecking order. He needs to get back to show he is worth a roster spot. Tucker is not separating himself and will get lost in the shuffle if he doesn’t.

On the other side of the field, Bryant just returned to practice. I’m looking forward to his first game action this week. We all know what he is capable of, though it will be interesting to see how much rust he gained from his year off. Good thing is, he has 3 preseason games to work back into game shape. Justin Hunter has been making plays all over camp. With Coates hurt and Bryant out, he shows he can carry the load. He may be a more consistent receiver than Coates, though he lacks Sammie’s top end speed and explosiveness. One last receiver Canaan Severin, who was initially the last backup at this spot, was already cut and is now out of the picture

I know I failed to make mention of DHB in my post. I've seen his reps diminish on the practice reports. He's been dropping down the on field depth chart, and when he's on the field, he's not making plays, let alone splash plays. I also see his ST snaps going to younger players (JuJu and Hilton to name a few). If he loses his ST reps as well, there really isn't a spot for him on this team. He has to start stepping up now to show he is needed on this thick roster.

yeah I think DHB has seen his last days.

for me as of right now it is

Brown
Bryant
Rogers
Coates - I think he will make it harder to get axed than we all anticipate.
Juju - Injuries keep him from being higher
Hunter just edging out Hamilton (although I prefer Coates to still get traded)

Deepest talent pool of wideouts the Steelers have had in a long time. Bryant &Brown will open things up for the others as well. I hope Juju has good juju in the health department soon.

GREAT post(s) Cope and thank you for your time in writing this.

DHB is probably out as you say his snap counts are diminishing. AYERS needs to be on the field if he is to do anything. I'm thinking he is gone also or try to sneak him by PS but doubt he'd clear. Hunter seems to be the odd cat in all this. Some say he's not that good and hasn't showed anything in the past well I'm thinking his change of environment is is secret to being reborn. Time will tell and Cope's very comprehensive write ups will KEEP us informed.

Salute the nation

At this point all Id be prepared to say is that Ayers non participation will likely see him cut and Tucker wont make it. Id say everyone else is in the mix. For some reason Hamilton really seems to rise in the games. The late cut date will make it very interesting for the bubble guys- Coates, Hamilton,DHB, Hunter, Ayers. If you are back soon you might put a body of work on the table where in tge past you might already be cut.

I think Ayers can hit the PS....

Tomlin seemed to say today that Hunter and Coates were "2 dogs going after 1 bone" .. so DHB might still have his spot. Might be up to Danny Smith.

Ya, he was giving Coates **** because he came back and was dropping balls that Hunter was catching. He needs to correct that **** and quick or he is gone.

He might have said it because they are the exact same type of receiver. So is Cobi IMHO...
