Well their backups are better than our backups........here's a few quick observations of this week 4 game vs Panthers.......I'll go on record right now....if the Panthers are dumb enough to cut their new FG kicker Joey Slye & keep their veteran kicker Graham Gano the Steelers should snatch up Slye and make him our FG kicker and cut Chris Boswell. If anyone was watching the game this kid's leg strength was on full display when he booted a 59yd FG right down the middle that would have been good from 70 yards. I don't think I've seen a FG kicker with that much leg EVER! His kickoffs went 20 yds deep into the stands......WOW is all I can say.

Stock Up:
Mason Rudolph - After 4 weeks of the pre-season it's pretty obvious to me that Mason Rudolph is our #2 QB
Cam Sutton - Looks better than last year......should be a lock to make the roster
Marcelis Branch - This kid should make the practice squad....I like his effort tonight on the field...
Sutton Smith - Finally saw the potential this kid has.....not sure if he will make the roster but I like what I saw
Henry Mondeaux - Noticed him last week.....BIG WIDE frame guy.....really has shown stead improvement all preseason.....should make Practice Squad.
Tuzar Skipper - He might not make the roster because it's a numbers game at this point but I'd have a hard time cutting this kid
Ulysees Gilbert III - Here's another kid like Skipper......I guess if I had to pick one I think Skipper has the slight advantage but they are both good. Gilbert burst through on Special Teams tonight with a nice FG Block on the Panthers 1st drive of the night!
Robert Spillane - Here's another guy who looks pretty good in garbage time....I just don't think he makes it
Isaiah Buggs - Has has a nice pre-season and is showing improvement each game
Jay Elliot - Nice strip and recovery for a TD. Maybe worthy of a spot on the Practice Squad

Stock Down:
Josh Dobbs - Mason Rudolph should be Ben's backup and not Dobbs just based on their preseason performances
Devlin Hodges - He belongs on the Practice Squad.....bad game today made worse by a horrible performance by his O-line
Chuck Okorafor - This guy has completely regressed in his second year....IMO he's in jeopardy of making this roster.....their are alot better backup O-linemen on this roster....Zach Banner, Fred Johnson & BJ Finney that belong before this kid.
Benny Snell - I'm sorry this kid might be the worst draft pick this season.......he's just not very good!
Artie Burns - Here's another kid who has played his last game as a Steeler IMO....time for the Steelers to send him packing!

I think you could slip Gilbert to the PS though you might lose him later. Skipper wont make it to the PS. I could move on from Chick and keep both. I disagree about Snell. He didn't have big runs but he had hard runs. He picked up the blitz well and caught at a couple passes. I think he is a solid third.

I disagree about Burns. He’s had a good preseason.

I agree with all the stock ups and would add Kam Kelly. Glad to see Skipper had 2 special teams tackles, a sack / forced fumble and at least 2 other QB pressures.

Burns got a major roster Bonus first day of camp. He has played well, he is not going to be cut. I just dont see how he makes the field. If they were interested in him as a slot corner they would have looked there. But Haden has been known to get hurt so he might come in handy.

Snell was 4 of 12 in the first half and a pass catch. I won't judge him late when the O-line 3rd string played like it.

Burns had a decent preseason I would keep him for depth.

I would keep Gilbert and Skipper. PS Sutton Smith. You could always IR Layne to make it happen. If his injury isn't serious you make him IR with a return designation. Or you could do that to Chickillo as well.

Chuckes would still make it as would Fred and Banner. I would just let Banner be the swing T.

Last night helped demonstrate the lack of depth on the OL. Sooner or later you have to start drafting them higher. Outside of Finney the backups are scary.

Laynes is so raw that if his injury is even a little severe it would be logical to ir him and give him a redshirt season more or less...

Burns still does not get it. Last night he acted as if he did something when in reality the passes were over thrown and Burns puts his fist up as if he made a play. He will be on the team because of cost but he also will be the weak link when on the field. Gilbert and Skipper continue to be seen around the ball making plays, how do they not make tis team. Buggs not flashy but has been better the more he is on the field, Tomlin needs to see this.

Really disappointed in Hodges although they didn't do him any favors by giving him the dregs of the OL.

But the guys playing last night were not the back-ups; they were the back-ups to the back-ups.

And looked like it, just like Carolina's 3rd string offensive line was terrible and shredded by the Steelers pass rush.

All this tells me is that when it comes down to 3rd string, there are a lot more competent pass rushers in the NFL than there are competent offensive linemen.

The OL takes communication as well as timing. It's easier to rush the passer when that's all you are doing. An OL has to communicate with other OL and make sure to get everything set. I wouldn't just any particular OL by last night's game unless they were just beaten on individual plays one on one.

Agreed. I couldn't believe the monster leg strength of this kid, he's from another planet. Looks like the Panthers got your memo. ;)

Makes you appreciate our starting 5. They really are badasses. Hope it continues to carry into and throughout the season under the direction of Sarrett.

I think people are confusing Burns playing better than last year with Burns playing well. Yes, he's improved, but he still sucks.

Good points.
