I would really work at FA to try and solve a problem or two on defense. Draft picks take two years to solve problems. And at corner it isn't like you need a top flight guy anyway. With this defense a good mid level guy is fine. Look at Willie Gay. But they do need An outside pass rusher. Jones is a complete bust. So if the players available are even close you have to go defense.

The problem is two-fold. Yes, Blake and Jarvis Jones suck. We pretty much agree there.

But Coaching is also a problem, as Tomlin wants Blake to start. Cockrell should start, with Boykin playing the slot. Then the DB's would be much better. Why this did not happen much earlier to me is mystifying. I also felt letting McCain go in free agnecy was not very wise.

As for Jarvis Jones, he's a bust. Just 2 sacks for an OLB in our 3-4 system. Horrible. Jones does not make many tackles either. Move on and try someone else. That someone could have been Howard Jones, but after seeing him 60+ times in practice, private films, and the pre-season Tomlin cut him. Howard when given the chance in NFL games produced 5 sacks. Personally, I felt Howard was terrible vs the run, but did have a nice speed rush. Hindsight shows keeping him as a 3rd down pass rusher would have been wise. I also said give Chickillo a few of Jarvies snaps to see what he has. What did we have to lose? Gasp--Bad coaching decisions again.

Having said that, I feel the defense could be better is Jarvis Jones and Blake are replaced for good. These two are reasons why the team is ranked 30th in pass defense despite facing 7 backup QB's this season
