Patriots Workout Former Steelers’ WR, Justin Hunter

I sure you saw this when watching the games, right?

Great question. Hunter only appeard in 5 game and caught just 3 passes, but was targeted 13 times. If you took a piss, you just might have missed his contribution for the season.

But yes, I saw him.

Yep. You saw him alright.....on a stat line.

Cope,

He didn’t run good routes or show good hands. He didn’t get open like Coates or Bryant could either. With little versatility to his game and being a back up, he was cut. It’s not like Hunter has X or Y skills. If he was good at either the coaches would have given him a chance in those roles.

He was picked up for virtually nothing for a reason and was cut with limited interest in the news.

Neither Coates, Hunter, Bryant, or Washington can play anything but the Z, like I stated before, versatility is a problem with all of those receivers, so if they don't perform well, at the one thing they are supposed to do (get open deep), it lessens the position, and their value to the team. Last year's production for the Z was the worst I've ever seen. And once again you are missing the point. If you aren't the starting Z receiver, you are inactive. Why is that? Because you can't play special teams. You don't get snaps unless the guy in front of you isn't playing.

I also track injuries and the inactive list, and guess what? Hunter was inactive for 7 of the first 12 games. Got hurt week 12, and was placed on the IR. Week 12 was a big deal for Washington, because he was benched, so Hunter was active that game. Hunter had a chance to win the position, but tore his shoulder early in the game when given the opportunity. That is what killed him, but the Steelers gave Hunter the chance to be the starter, late in the season.

Plus being a FA, the Steelers didn't need to bring back an injured player that can only play the Z. It's why Johnny Holton is a nice pickup this year. He can play the Z, but can also play some slot, and does ST coverage (like DHB).

The Z was horrid last year, and needs to be improved, anyway possible. That's why I also state that Washington is not a lock. 500+ snaps to yield 16 catches for 217 yards? You want to be hard on a guy? I'm hard on the starter averaging 1/2yard a snap, who won't have the benefit of AB taking 2/3 defenders on the other side...and he still couldn't get open. If given those snaps last year, Hunter would have had much more production, because he knows how to separate and runs crisper routes that Wash. Wash got the snaps because he was a high draft pick and the Steelers were waiting for the light to turn on. It never did, and they went with the better option in week 12.
