Non existent. I think it’s fair to say this is the worst group of LBs in Steeler recent history, maybe ever. The OLBs are absolutely worthless in rushing the passer. Watt is a decent player, he works his tail off, I’ll give him that but he’s never going to be a 10+ sack guy. Bud, I’ll keep it short on what he brings to the table.. nothing. Dude is worthless unless he has free run at the QB. Once Ola is healthy and can come off the IR, he will instantly be our best push rusher.

Meanwhile, Patriots pick up John Simon. First game he plays, a sack and 5 tackles. He’s absolutely better than Chickillo that’s for damn sure.

Say what you want about the LB's but you do realize we have 2 DL and 1 or 2 LB's rushing most of the time and we hardly blitzed at all in yesterdays game. You absolutely need a minimum of 3 DL on the field at all times to occupy the big uglies on O. That is how the LB's can get to the QB with their speed. Expecting our LB's to do what they did when LeBeau was here just isn't going to happen any more. At least, not until they get a NT that can be on the field for all 3 downs and occupy 1 or 2 OL.

Steelers coaches are stuck in the past, they expect teams to come out running the ball so naturally the defense is always surprised by passes over the middle. when the safeties cheat up to the LOS.

Nobody on the DL even warrants a double team so of course we have no pressure up the middle.

But Bud flapping his arms like a stork as he rushes 5 yards past the QB on every play is just hilarious to me.

Cool Shades and he’s not in his right mind. I still say he’s calling the shots on both offense and defense.

So they’re saying that Rooney, Colbert and Cool Shades were all huddled in the locker room. That would have been interesting conversation.

The OLB's can get some pressure, but when there is none from the DL its a long day.

The Steelers tired to rush three and cover. A joke.

A nickel formation that might work. Might as well put in Matt Thomas, who can cover, and run, and Bostic as the other Linebacker. Play Big Dan who's tough to move, and pick our best 5th DB. Dare them to run. The pass just kills us.

New defense on 2nd and long or 3rd and long would look something like this:

DL = Watt, Heyward, Big Dan and Dupree

LB = Thomas, and Bostic

DB = Haden, Burns, Burnett, Hilton, and Davis

This alignment would offer some pass rush, and the best speed at LB. Notice Tuitt is out, and Williams is also out. The blitz options would be Davis, who's good on the blitz, and or Thomas / Bostic. Worth a try.
 
Other teams easily pick up any "exotic blitzes" that Tomlin sends. What our defense puts out there is nothing new to anyone. Tomlin/Butler (TomBut) is very predictable.

We like to move people around. Just line up one more defender than the offense can block and let them guess who's coming.
 
Coaching can't fix lack of talent. Scheme can't fix lack of talent. Steelers no longer have a clue drafting defense, the days of finding "tweener" gems are long long gone.

All teams run some form of 3-4 now, zone blitzes just don't work by themselves, you need playmakers on defense, and we have none.

(Other than Watt, and he's the only one showing anything at all, so naturally teams scheme to take him out)
 
Its hard to judge the pass rush with the messed up schemes we run. i think we would be better off lining up in basic defenses and seeing how it goes. Any QB will pick any team apart if they have all day.

If Watt wants to be great, he needs to find a way to overcome. Teams have schemed for James Harrison, Polamalu, Shazier...etc and they still were impact players. Outside of the Cleveland game, Watt has been invisible this year.

You must have missed Butler saying they are coming into this year using simpler schemes , lol

Here's the bottom line, no pass rush, no stopping the run = piss poor defense, end of story

I still say no to this. This a lot like what we are already doing - rushing 2 DL. Watt and Dupree are not DL. You need 3 big uglies on D to have a chance against 5 big uglies on O. Putting 2 out there makes it easy work.
 
switching Dupree and Watt has done nothing but made the rush non factor. Add defensive backs that are terrible in everything they do games are as last night.

yeah i saw that and heard that after the KC game, but then i see a WR run right between 2 CBs.
 
Guys, we led the league in sacks LAST YEAR! What is the difference? same personnel.
 
Dupree gets sacks when he is unblocked, he is a horrible pass rusher and has little football instincts.
 
Pass rush!?? Whad I log into the wrong site??? Can’t be talking about the Steelers!!! What pisses me off we have two of the best defensive ends in football in Heywood and tuitt, serviceable defensive tackles Hargrove and Alualu... but no we aren’t going to use a good stiff defensive line because, for whatever reason, I don’t know. Not fancy enough for our mad genius coaches “look at me I’m a mad genius” coaches. We only filled trophy case after trophy case with championship trophy’s and super bowl trophy’s with such a defensive front. Start those guys put watt and Dupree outside blitzing them on top of the pass rush.... you would have sacks. For one thing a pass rush breaks down blocking and creates rush lanes, neither of which is happening right now. You can write a book on the things wrong with our defense but if we are to have any hope of righting this boat we need a pass rush.
 
Watt is starting to concern me also..

He is trending very mediocre at the moment..
Dare I say another defensive number one mistake?

When every one of your #1 picks looks very mediocre, is it bad drafting or bad player development. Watching this defense week in and week out, I would say our coaching staff couldn't coach their way out of a brown paper bag let alone develop players.

I will give Bud and Watt the benefit of the doubt as long as Joey Porter is their coach..

That dude needs to go.
