Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver Demarcus Ayers has opted out of his CFL contract hoping for another NFL shot.

Ayers signed with the Riders in February, it was an agreement through the 2021 season, which means the green and white retain his rights in Canada. He spent three seasons in the NFL from 2016 to 2018 with the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ayers was selected in the seventh round, 229th overall of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Steelers and went on to play four games with Pittsburgh — two in the regular season and two in the post-season. Ayers caught his first professional touchdown on January 1, 2017 helping lift Pittsburgh over Cleveland 27-24.

He ended that season with 80 yards receiving on nine receptions and one touchdown. The 26-year-old has played in 12 NFL pre-season games and spent a part of 2019 with the now-defunct Alliance of American Football’s San Antonio Commanders.

Ayers was a decorated NCAA athlete at the University of Houston where he played three seasons at receiver while being utilized as a kick returner. In his junior year, the Texas native was named to Phil Steele’s American Athletic Conference first team as both a punt returner and receiver.

Ayers was selected to the AAC first-team as a receiver and return specialist and was on the Biletnikoff Award watch list for his 1,222-yard, six touchdown season as a pass catcher as well as for his efforts as punt returner where he returned 28 punts for 290 yards and a touchdown.

The versatile Ayers also threw a 20-yard touchdown that season. As a freshman in 2013, he was named the AAC’s Special Teams Player of the Year after leading the conference with an average 27.6 yards per kick return for a total of 1,021 yards and a touchdown – a university freshman record – and had five games with at least 100 kick return yards.

Ayers just needs another opportunity to show he can make plays in the NFL. If not the five-foot-nine, 182-pound Ayers has a placeholder spot in Saskatchewan.

Yes I would love for him to get a shot in Black and Gold....but with our WR group that is not likely

Hope he gets a shot somewhere and makes the most of it

N't know CoolieMan, he left here on a sour note by taking a pot shot or two at the organization. I don't keep track of a player once they are no longer a STEELERS player but for some reason I've kinda watch Ayers post STEELERS. I do wish best for him but like you I realize the odds of him in B & G is slimmer than Slim Pickens on a one string guitar....................

I just happened to stumble across this story while surfing the world wide web today....

I remember him being a bit bitter on his way out but he was spoke very well of the organization in the interview Cope posted here a while back

https://steelernationforums.com/sho...-at-the-Depot-for-Coolie-s-guy-Demarcus-Ayers

I know chances are slim but it is still the off season and I hadn't pimped a UH player in a while so I just had to do this.....

Well in doing so, you've given many their needed "fix", Coach is still probably OD-ing in his little corner................ LoL

How is that OL man doing these days (Josh ?). Can't remember his name right off.

I do see several YouTube videos on STEEELRS TC and a few on individual players. There is a pretty good one out on Claypool, gets me hyped even more.

In a couple months I'll start back up my kayak training and in doing so I watch "full games" off YouTube while I'm rowing on my awesome machine.

Some say they are not going to watch NFL, myself being a 52+ year steelers fan, will watch STEELERS stuff / games but NOT spend $$$coin$$$ on anything NFL. What's your plans Coolie? Just curious..........

Coolie's plan is to stay drunk and **** post.
so far, his plan is on point.

He has a shot if he was on this team. He's a slot, and even played some X in the last game of the year vs CLE when we rested everyone. It would be him vs McCloud and Switzer for backup X/Slot receiver.

Great point Cope and of those three (no order) Mcloud / switz / Ayers, who would be most likely to make the team? PS ?

Hey DIC, right now I have the final 2 slots being a battle between Cain (Z), McCloud (X), and Swtizer (Y). We already have 2 Zs, so unless they're playing Cain at X to see if he can handle the load, he's looking like he may be odd man out, so you would have McCloud and Swtizer battling directly with Ayres who can play both the X and Y. I always liked Ayers return potential more than Switz, but Switz gives you a toughness, if you have someone that can get him the ball. Swtiz is also the best all around ST player in the bunch as he occupies a lot of ST formations. So if Ayres made the team, other people would have to take up Switz's roles on ST, which is doable. Ayres is more like an Eli Rogers, short area quickness, better speed, and clean hands.

Today, if I had to pick, I'd go with McCloud and Switz. If Switz is still hurt, they bring in Ayres and he shows he can play, I think Switz would have the toughest time sticking. Also if they ended up going with Ayers, who can play 2 positions, the Steelers would be able to keep a 3rd Z if they really like Cain's skillset over McCloud. Really a lot of moving parts here!

I don't know a whole lot about Cain or McCloud but do feel Ayers would be better than Switz....IMO he is quicker inside and can make guys miss. On PR he is more likely to make the first guy down miss and do more with the ball given a few good blocks.

Didn't Ayers also run some X during the Raven game? The long shot downfield to him where they drew the PI call that set up Bell's rushing TD, seems to be an example of it....too lazy to go back and see where he started out on that play......

Coolie post, insert any random Houston player for next he's gonna be a star post.

Yes Coolie, Ayres started a game at X against Cleveland and usually lined up in the slot when all the starters played.

That was part of why I was so surprised Ayers stunk up his departure. If I remember right had he stayed on PS he would have been starting due to injury in mid season. Just a thought

Some poster here, I forget his name laughed at the idea of Josh Jones being a 1st round pick. He went in round three.

As for Mr. Ayers, like I said he's too small and not fast enough to make up for it. A near zero on special teams and a 5th type of WR. If he had value on special teams as a quality return man, maybe he would have played more in the NFL. His act is over.

some poster is a ******* douchebag....

He went way after many experts expected him to go....that happens to more than one guy each year....

Ayers is plenty big enough and fast enough to succeed in the NFL

his time is likely past and he will go back to the CFL....but you can't blame the guy for taking one more shot at his dream....

You know coach, sometimes it feels as though your need to be vindicated for being "right" is pathological.

(and I'm not being an ******* here, I'm serious - have you considered talking to someone about this?) I mean somebody professional who may be able to help you deal with your overwhelming need for validation? I have to assume this need significantly effects your relationships, job and your life in general.
