Okung coming for a visit

i think there are a few reasons for the bigger role in free agency.

1. They have not had cap space for years. They made some bad investments which coincided with the bad timing of the cap not going up at it's normal rare for a few years. They just didn't have the cap room. Now the steelers have cap room and the cap itself has gone up quite a bit.

2. They see a closing Super Bowl window with Ben. The steelers know that when you lose a franchise QB, it's hard to find a new one. Especially today when college coaches don't even teach football anymore.

3. They saw last year that this flawed team can beat any team in the NFL. There is no great team in the NFL now and the steelers are just a few players away from being a favorite. If Antonio Brown didn't get cheap shotted and intentionally injured by the Bengals, the steelers may have been in the Super Bowl.

Real nice post. This is exactly what I believe as well, but they need to complete the deals for it to count for anything. The Steelers will enter the season as one of the favorites to make a deep run in the playoffs and while they don't need to break the bank for anyone, they should find the right pieces to help put themselves in contention for a top seed in the AFC.

It will be amazing if Okung signs. This will be like getting Farrior. Okung is a top talent who has not always played like it. We've seen what Munchak can do with spare parts, what can he do with Pouncey back healthy and an all pro talent like Okung at LT?

let me add one more point

4. Bad drafting few seasons ago caused the team to not re-sign their picks leaving money available to get Free Agents. If your drafts are succesful you don't need to invest in highly coveted FA

So is this guy going to sign with someone or what? "Would be a nice pickup if it was us"

So Okung met with Munch yesterday and all quiet on that front. I wonder if they are trying to free up some money to sign him to a 3-4 year deal.

Okung and maybe Patrick Robinson would be nice. Surprised we didn't re-sign McClendon yet.

Could be eyeing a DT early in the draft.

They seem to be addressing the problem areas nicely. I think they're targeting positions that are weak in the draft (LT and TE) so they can focus on CB, SS and DT early in the draft which seems to have some solid talent based on our draft spot. Good strategy IMO.

I agree, I keep searching around and I can't find **** from this guy. Is he going to make a decision or is he just playing a game to get Seattle to pay him more. I thought for sure after meeting with Munch the ink would be dry and we would be onto the next target. IMO the longer it takes the better chance Seattle gets him back.

Well Harris is visiting today so we'll see what happens...

Conspiracy theorist in me -- Steelers don't announce Green or Okung visits. Do announce Harris visit. Putting pressure on agent-less Okung?

I thought it was well known Okung would visit before his actual visit. I seem to remember reading about it before that weekend....

I agree 100%. CB and Safety are good through rd 1-2. I really think we go cb in rd 1 this year and safety in rd 2 or rd 3. A cb drafted would compete with Cockrell. A safety drafted would compete with Golden. Makes sense to me.

Lets not forget that he is representing himself in these negotiations, which is slowing the process down QUITE a bit.

There's a number the team doesn't want to pay over and that's the sticking point. No conspiracy needed. They'll up the ante if they feel its the right guy. I'm sure they already have deals in place to restructure Timmons and maybe Ben to create the necessary cap room.

Looks like we are officially out!

Him and Weddle were on fishing expeditions anywhere that needed an LT or a S. They were looking to leverage teams that had the cap space. Hopefully it costed the Ravens an extra million or two.

I thought everyone wants to play for Tomlin and the sb bound steelers

Donald Penn resigned with the Raiders, making Okung the hands-down best LT on the market
if he wants another ring, his options are drying up the longer he takes.

I guess it is possible to make every thread a "Tomlin hate " thead. Who would of thought?

When I search his name I see he still hasn't signed with anyone and his last tweet, (is that what it's called) I'm not on twitter, is still the picture of our super bowl trophies. I just find that very interesting and wonder if we are still in play?

From what I hear he's holding out for $11-13 million per year, elite LT money.
