Official Prediction thread, Steelers vs Panthers.
Steelers 5-2-1 at home vs the Panthers 6-2
Time, Thursday Nov 8, 8:20 PM on Fox.
Odds. Steelers are a 4 point favorite.
Thanks NFL, schedule a short week for us after we play Baltimore on the road. Despite minor coaching gaffe’s in situational football, the Steelers are on a roll and have won four games in a row. The 0-2-1 start is becoming a distant memory. Midway through the season the team’s identity has changed thanks to two men. Mr. James Conner has transformed the offense, offering power running, speed, and the rare ability to make his man miss. He’s been a first down machine and Excellent in the red zone. Conner's ability to hit big plays is special. He can also run out the clock when needed, which for us is a must as the defense is not top notch. The other man who deserves props for the identity change is Mr. Randy Fichtner. Fitchner's play calling has been very solid, using forgotten plays in the play book such as the quarterback sneak. Fitchner knows when to call play action and generally calls plays on 3rd down close to or past the marker. He seldom calls for something a player can not do. Ben seems less likely to force the ball for those short WR screens or deep passes under Fitchner to Brown where bad things can happen. Instead, Ben goes to who’s open, and the result is more touchdown and less field goals. A major improvement in the red zone has happened, thanks in large part to these two men.
Carolina is a very good team. Cam Newton is probably playing his best football, but I don’t view his receivers or running game as something we can’t limit. The worry of course is McCaffery can toast our ILB’s in pass coverage, and Olsen is an upper level Tight End capable of doing the same. A game plan to limit these two vs. the pass is a must as is containing Newton’s ability to run the football. That won't be easy. On defense, Carolina is good at #8[SUP]th[/SUP] overall in yards , and 12[SUP]th[/SUP] overall in points surrendered at 22.5 per game. Carolina is also excellent at forcing turnovers at 15 total for the year, ( +8 differential ) , so Conner and McDonald need to hold on the ball and Ben needs to make sure his throws are on the money. This is a game where being -2 or -1 in turnovers can cost us a loss as Carolina is the best team we have played since Kanas City.
