Official Prediction thread Steelers vs Chargers
Steelers 7-3-1 at home vs the Chargers 8-3
Time December 2[SUP]nd[/SUP], 8:20PM Eastern Standard time
Odds: Steelers are a 3.5 favorite
There were signs of the wheels coming off in Jacksonville. We escaped with a win. In Denver our winning streak came to a crashing halt. Turnovers, special teams, and sloppy play are to blame. Yes, the refs screwed us, but in the end we beat ourselves.
Phillip Rivers, who might be the NFL’s most under rated player completed 25 straight passes last Sunday. He’s very accurate ( nearly 70% of his passes are completed for the season ) and tough to sacks with just 19 sacks against for the year. With 26 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions for the year ( over a 4 to 1 TD to interception ratio ) all signs point to him ripping up our pass defense like a samurai sword would cut a thin sheet of tin foil. The good news for us is Mevlin Gordon is likely out. The bad news is his back up looks just as good when given the opportunity. Elker has breakaway speed. Our lack of run defense was painfully obvious vs Denver. We were lucky their coach did not call more running plays. When Tuitt is out, we get pushed backward too easily and neither of our ILB’s can cover or catch up to speedy backs. More bad news for our defense. I saw signs of Coty Sensabaugh becoming undone vs Denver. With Burns benched, this very dangerous.
On defense, the Chargers got their best player back in Bosa, and he responded with a two sack game.
While I’m sure Ben and the boys can score and get 400+ yards of offense, I just don’t see the Steelers fixing their sloppy play anytime soon. We are playing an opponent who commits few turnovers, and can score. Our defense is what it is. None of our safeties can make a play on the ball, and the run defense is shaky. While the pass rush is good, we are playing an opponent’s who’s tough to sack.
Neither the Chargers or Steelers have good special team units.
