Official Day 2 Draft Discussion May 1st

Golson was such a bad pick that I will not watch the draft anymore. They didn't have the balls to give up a pick to move up for Maxx. I would have at least taken PJ Williams in rd 2. Just plain ******* sad.

Worst draft I have seen in 10 years. After Dupree our picks suck.

What if the steelers did get Maxx Williams? Do they still takes Coates in the 3rd? They'd probably be forced to take a CB.

Maybe the Ravens trading up for Williams is a blessing in disguise as it may have meant the steelers didn't take a DB until RD 4 and that would be a bad draft.

This is kind of what I am thinking........players can unfairly slide because of physical attributes. It does not mean they can't be a player.

Heart is what makes a player great. Talent and heart can easily overcome a shortcoming in physical attribute.

Golson appears to be well stocked in both. Of all the selections so far in the draft he is the one who will make an immediate impact for the Steelers. Imagine seeing takeaways again.

It was reported after the combine that Max Williams turned off a lot of teams because of his attitude. We need leaders.

I absolutely LOVE how every year at this time folks start talking about how they could have or should have traded up/down .... as if 1) they were working the draft for the Steelers and absolutely, positively know for a fact that no attempt was made. Which, if I'm not mistaken, reports were that they did try to trade up in the second and couldn't get a deal done (possibly because they weren't willing to trade away the farm). And 2) As if if just wishing for a trade makes it feasible.

Btw, for those talking about how the Ravens hosed us in the second (which they did), it appears that all they could do in the first was sit back and watch helplessly as the Steelers took the player they wanted (Dupree).

I would like to see a mock of the NFL draft utilizing the trades of picks that actually did happen......some teams gave up a lot....some very little.

Looks like Arians wanted to stick it to Art Tombert............I wonder which team ratted us out?

NFL teams spend the fall figuring out why they want to draft players based on what they see on the field.

They then spend winter and spring figuring out why they don't want to draft those same players based on what they see off the field.

They often spend the following fall remembering why they wanted to draft those players in the first place.

We'll be fine. Maxx Williams is not the end-all be-all of TE's

After I left the board last night I looked at Golson and he has a few things that should work well for us. He is fast and actually plays faster. He is a good leader on the team and plays generally with a cool head. He likely has better hands than Coates if you don't mind some hyperbole. The kid intercepted 10 passes and broke up passes that were intended for players much bigger than him. He is a willing tackler and will go after anyone. He has been used as a blitzer on occasion.

He has nearly everything we were looking for with one exception, the area he comes up short in is his height other than that he is a very good pick. After doing some research on him I am thinking the pick was a reach but was likely needed at that time. There was one cornerback I would have rather had that was available when we picked but we would have needed to spend a first round pick on him and that was Byron Jones who was taken right after we picked Dupree.

Just as you can't make people trade with you or force them to let the guys you want fall to your spot sometimes you need to reach for a player you want or you will get players you don't want and then cut which is really a waste of a pick. In looking at what was there we could have taken another linebacker and said the hell with corner as there was value there or gone for the best cover guy we could get 10 interceptions last year by this kid makes him pretty good.

Coates is fast and a developmental pick. He spends his time taking the top off the coverage. In some plays having him, Brown, Bryant, Bell, and Miller on the field will cause lots of problems for teams to cover and should eliminate putting guys up in the box they will have to cover the whole field. The tight ends in this draft do not impress me with their talent. The best ones would only be ok in the nfl. There are no great ones this is a weak class so I am not sorry we missed the guy the ravens got. Glad they have him. We still have some needs and if there is a decent lineman offensive or defensive that we can keep instead of Thomas, A potential back up quarter back that can throw the ball, A good running back, full back or safety we need to look at them. I would just like to see the team grab players at this point that might make the team.

Heartily agree. When I want a TE to replace Miller, it certainly won't be a "Maxx Williams". If you're going to play a TE he'd better be as good an option as the WRs you have, and be able to block. Williams is neither.

exactly why i stopped watching last year. do something. ANYTHING. don't just sit by and deal with what comes to you

I would have still taken OWA and if it came down to it looked at the corners that were cut downs instead of reaching, an alternative would have been Byron Jones instead of Dupree and Owa with the second and still take Coates or take Golson in the third if there.

I still like the Dupree pick a lot and hope the other two work out but at this point I see one that will likely be a real good player and two maybes. That is not how I wanted things to go but you can't draft what is not there.

My NFL comparison to Golson is Jamar Fletcher former badger CB. He was almost identical in size, speed, and college stats. He had a nice NFL career as a nickel or dime back but never a starter. I guess if he becomes a core special teamer and a nickel back he will at least contribute but in my mock along draft I went a different direction.

My big issue is twofold

1. Golson could have been had in rd 3. Most draft people also agree
2. We got one upped by Ozzie in rd 2, when we clearly wanted Maxx Williams. Ed Bouchette said the Steelers were pissed that Balt jumped over them. Baltimore clearly had a need at TE, but the stupid Steelers FO wouldn't just trade up a few spots to make sure we secure our guy. Sometimes you cant just sit there and hope. This FO has no ******* guts or assertiveness at all.

If we got Golson in rd 3, after getting Maxx in rd 2, I would possibly be ok with the pick. It was wayyyy too early to take the kid. Golson was even surprised. You don't take a nickel corner in rd 2, that's just nuts. Def not watching the draft anymore after this crappy years draft.

You don't know that Golson would have dropped to their pick in the third. Kabila reported the Steelers DID try to trade up.

I'm glad we didn't take Maxx Williams in the 2nd rd.

I still think Golson was a reach, if it were impossible to trade down then Rollins could've been taken and then Golson on the 3rd. CBs back to back would've been sweet

can still double up grab one in round 4 or 5

I remember a Steeler CB drafted in round 5 he turned out to be a pretty damn good cover corner...

which CBs are left that could help the team? I think Safety in 4th round should be the way to go, there's still value there

If you traded to move up in the second, chances are that you don't have a third.
In today's NFL, a nickel CB IS a STARTER. The percentage of time spent in nickel/dime vs that spent in base has definitely tilted towards nickel/dime.

What do you guys think about taking a chance on a guy like Ifo-Ekpre Olomu? Now, I know he's like 5'9 so I'm sure this place might blow the hell up, but by all accounts had be declared for the draft last year, many seemed to consider him a top-20 pick. I know he has a knee and he fact that no one has heard anything from his camp is probably discouraging. Would anyone here have an interest in him? Kevin white is another guy that intrigues me. I read a lot that said he compares well to the other TCU corner and his former teammate that the chargers got last year.
