No JPJ Again This Week Austin Says He Won’t Start

I may be about to say/ask what has already been said/asked but I do have to admit I am being lazy right now and don't want to read everything right now. We know Tomlin and the Porter family have a somewhat close relationship. Is there a reasonable chance that Tomlin isn't throwing him into the grinder (quite frankly, where JPJ should be given our Wallace shenanigans) to "protect" him from looking like crap like everyone else in our crap system? And, if I am not saying it well, is he protecting him because he is JPJ? I mean, basically a first round pick not being ready to at least learn is suspect.
No it is just the normal turtle approach the team takes towards rookies. I don't think he is trying to protect him I just think he has little confidence in rookies.

Ok, not a baller by any stretch, but if you have a poor tackling rookie CB, why would you force him into zone cover? Would it not be smarter to play man and allow the rookie to use his defending skills....If those aren't good enough why take him 1st pick in the second round? Are you saying he can't tackle, can't cover or defend? Some how other teams have rookies starting?

Jones in the first is another head scratcher, of playing when just two years before———— a 4th round rookie started at left tackle.

No offense but your translation isn't any kind of actual truth. I think JPJ will be very good but he is having to learn to cover without being so grabby down the field. He will get DPI with what I have seen so far. At least until he earns the star treatment. He has gotten lucky twice now.
All CBs grab. Refs could throw a flag for it on every passing play. That is horrible if that is Tomlin's only concern is Porter grabbing to much. Put him in there and get him the experience.

All grab but in the few big plays porter has made his grabbing is a bit more obvious. I have no problem at all with bringing a corner along slowly. The mental side is hard at that position and we have ruined a few corners. I care more about the long term than the instant gratification. People have no patience. Two bad plays and people would be calling him a bust.

Pud Peterson will get smoked by Zay Flowers.....I predict 9 rec 172 yds 2 TD's for Zay. Can't wait to hear Pud Peterson's excuses this week!

You can't tackle you can't start, simple as that.

I hear yaz, but how do you explain the starters that can’t tackle now?

The JPJ kid needs to be Tomlin-ized before he can start. Austin is working his magic on that aspect right now.

So true. Jones isn't ready but Moore was apparently.

Then 90% of our players wouldn't be playing apparently. No one it seems is able to tackle, but I did hear that Tomlin is practicing in pads this past week. Maybe all that will turn around.

After todays game, JPJ better be the starter the rest of the year.
He might be ready...I won't hold my breathe though.

I think it was Jeff Hathhorn on The Fan, he was saying there are tons of young WRs making instant impacts in the NFL. Who's covering those guys? College CBs like JPJ and they should also be able to come in and make an instant impact.

Porter was notoriously grabby in his Penn state scouting video. Like every single draft breakdown mentioned it a lot… it was probably a big reason he fell out of the top of the draft

In all honesty it is a huge difference though… before the 2000’s wrs never played much as rookies, but as multi wr formations became the norm in spread offenses, Teams found they could give them limited route trees and minimize them ******* up

With other positions, especially on D… you have to know all the coverages or else you can blow the entire play… its harder to limit what the player does without liming the entire D

We cant even sign a vet and get them starting in a reasonably short time… and it takes a while for veteran additions to gel…

I get why they want to hold him back, especially since if you get a rep as a handsy guy its hard to break… but with the issues the D is having, it’s probably good to play him more than they are

I agree that he should begiven more playing time, but as I mentioned on this thread...

it really doesn't matter if Junior starts or not...

Its number of snaps and what type of assignments they give him is what really matters.

Coverage was okay this past week. PFF had him best in the league.

Well, guess what. According to Austin the time to start JPJ is .... "Not right now. When the time comes, it'll come."
Mr. Austin, you sir, are a complete idiot. Unless by "Not right now" you mean: "Not until the game directly coming after our bye."

Yeah still not fond of either coordinator. This team could be coached up better on both sides of the ball.

Seems Porter was in a little more this week. We all know about the great interception that kept us in the game. But, we didn’t hear Porter’s name a whole lot outside of that.

Why? Even with a raw rookie in they still preferred to target Wallace and Pat P. I think that says quite a bit too.

So I’m hearing that JPJr is going to start after the Bye… the Rams have Kupp back so that wr duo is going to be absolutely brutal on us…
