NFL ratings

Really, it is too hard to judge anything off of ratings, as so many people are now watching games on smart phones, tablests...etc, streaming the games, and finding other ways to watch the games. Until the NFL and owners start losing advertising and sponsorship dollars it is all for nothing.

Some of that is simply people turning off their TVs. As they are tired of politics invading football. Now if I turn something on and it isn't talking just football, click off. Then if it is Steelers time, click on. But if the announcers start talking politics, click off. And 5 minutes later click on and will stay on if they STFU and just talk football.

The ratings include streaming so that's not an excuse. What you really need to do is compare the ratings to 2015 ratings because last year they were way down as well. Look at the week 3 2015 Sunday night game. 22.1 million viewers in 2015 and 17.5 million this year. Broncos/Lions in 2015 and Oakland/Redskins this year. Ratings are in the *******.

i don't believe those numbers -- especially when they show TNF is up --

Not trying to turn this into politics so please refrain on both sides. But from what I can see total viewership is down, way down. Surprisingly enough the earlier games had a slight increase and Thursday night football was way up.

its not as good as it used to be, too many rule changes, the new NFL is like arena football league, cant hit too hard, cant touch the QB,...

Sorry but that NFL & Roger Goodell line is invalid. These ratings include the cord cutters.

Ratings were WAY down this weekend. Their only chance to get ratings up a bit was because Monday nights game was being compared to last years game where no one was watching because of a hurricane or something like that.

And, the owners still want to keep good ol' Rog. It just makes no sense.

They're comparing it to comparable NFL network only games. Last years week 3 TNF game was also on CBS so they're not comparing them directly.

Streaming is accounted for and easier to gauge because they can see exactly how many devices are streaming at any one time, TV is a bit different because they still rely on the Nielsen system but with cable boxes it is much faster to get the data.

MNF has had bad matchups for awhile and cord cutters have hurt it bad, so I don't think it is used as the bell cow any more.
To me, the big indicator is Sunday Night Football. That is the NFL's premier game. Their big money game with the best teams.

The percentage drop at the link can be deceiving because it only gives you the change from week to week, you don't see the big picture.
From that same website here is the actual viewership comparison for 2016 - 2017 for Sunday Night Football. You can see 2017 SNF dropped 7 Million viewers so far.
Week 1: 23.1M - 24.36M
Week 2: 22.8M - 20.23M
Week 3: 20.6M - 17.47M

In 2016 Sunday Night Football's number took a big drop in week 4, down to 18M. The lowest was week 5 at 16M when SNF went up against the 1st Debate.
For the rest of the 2016 season SNF stayed between 17M-18M until after Thanksgiving when it jumped all the way back above 20M to it's normal numbers.
So now they are already back down to the 2016 low point.

Last year the NFL's TV rights holders (ABD-NBC-CBS-Fox) had to actual pay back sponsors for lost revenue after 8-9 weeks of bad ratings.
The sponsors pay, before the season starts, for an expected ratings number. The NFL and SNF had always done historically amazing numbers, they were probably paying for 24M+ viewers.
There are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.

Rates are down due to the product. Not the ten people who took a knee prior to this weekend.

Unfortunately that is part of the product. Hopefully they take it away so that the disgruntled fans can enjoy watching football again.

But yes there is many issues within the NFL , protests are just one of them.

Not trying to stir the political pot but I think all sides could agree to not show the anthem or to not show the players during the anthem and that would go a long way to solving this issue.

That’s not true. They had professional polling done and politics came back as the top reason for decline. Yes, there were multiple reasons such as quality of play, too many penalties, etc. but politics was the top reason.

Sports is the last refuge to get away from politics and the real world. Most people, even those who agree with the protesters dislike politics entering into sports and are turning it off. It’s crushing ESPN.

I think it's all of the above, but to pretend that the protests are not a significant reason for the ratings drop is foolish IMHO. Personally, I think the #1 reason, from which most (if not all) of the reasons flow from: Roger Goodell.

My solution is to allow each player to add a sticker on the back of their helmet for whichever charity or cause they support. It’s a non invasive way for each player to show support for whatever and it doesn’t place your teammates into awkward situations.

Ratings are down due to politics. This is an older poll in 2016, I'm thinking now fans are even more pissed off now.
