Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN)Armed attackers are holding as many as 20 hostages at a cafe in a diplomatic zone of Bangladesh's capital. A gunbattle with police left at least two senior police officers dead and 40 people were injured.

ISIS claimed responsibility, according to Amaq News Agency, an ISIS media branch.

• A police officer in charge of a nearby station was shot dead, Maruf Hasan of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said. A second officer later died from gunshot wounds, Detective Police Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam tells CNN.

• Alam said 40 people were wounded, some by gunshots and others by shrapnel from explosive devices.

• Assailants were throwing explosives at police, a source at the scene said.

Hostages freed as Dhaka commandos storm restaurant after 'Isil attack' in Bangladeshi capital

Bangladesh security forces including commandos have stormed a restaurant in the capital where dozens of people including foreigners were being held hostage by suspected Islamist militants.

Gunmen reported to be allied with Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant attacked the restaurant in the diplomatic quarter of the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, with police saying several patrons, including foreigners, were held inside.

The operation to free the hostages began at 7.40am local time, around 10 hours after the siege began. The gunfire stopped about 45 minutes later, with 13 hostages reportedly rescued. A police official said at least five unidentified bodies had been found.

Italian and Japanese citizens were reported to be among those held hostage.

Earlier one suspected attacker was reportedly injured, arrested and taken to hospital.

But the 20 Foreigners, apparently mostly Italian and Japanese, were found dead, their throats slit. Reports indicate 13 hostages were “rescued,” but other reports indicate the Islamic Terrorists may have spared those 13 hostages because they could recite verses from the Koran, while those killed could not. The Bangladeshi English Newspaper “The Daily Star” reports...

“The gunmen were doing a background check on religion by asking everyone to recite from the Quran. Those who could recite a verse or two were spared. The others were tortured.”
