Nobody questions what he means on the field. He's a dumb *** off it, and there's no arguing that. When it's time to re up him I hope they pass.

If he gets his **** together you don't pass on that. He has the talent to be Randy Moss.

He makes such a huge different to this offense. Get him, Brown, Bell, Green and hopefully a reliable slot receiver and the offense would be unreal. Unfortunately we have not been lucky enough to see all of these guys on the field with Ben nearly enough.
Yeah it's so frustrating, man. I pray he has his head on straight and can play. He's such a force and opens the field so much for AB. Wheaton being out really screwed us too. He at least is someone who could've contributed a lot.

I like Wheaton, but I want the Steelers to get a dependable No. 2/3 guy to play in the offense. I know it could seem like overkill, but a guy like Tyler Boyd in last year's draft would've been ideal. Certainly there are other options, it's just uncovering a guy who can play the middle of the field and do some of that dirty work that our current crop of receivers doesn't do.
The problem is, how can you trust him? You have to use a spot on someone that could step in for him if he gets suspended again
I would think hard about bringing in a OLBer and a WR this offseason if I ran the show.
With the first pick I would draft probably a ILBer if he was within BPA. And that would be a solid start to a next year.
See Wheaton is probably gone, Bryant is a question mark moving forward. And Coates has proven undependable as well.
Eli hasn't exactly lit it up. Some might say the Steelers could use two WRs. And I would be ok with them drafting one and strengthening the position that has been a problem this year.
Just saw a live chat with Gerry Dulac and he was asked about Coates, he said he catches the ball great in practice, but he has run the wrong route on many occasions, so his fingers may have been fine for awhile now and that's why he's on special teams and not offense much.
Keep it simple for him. The kid can take the top off the defense and force safety help. Not say he can run a go every time but I also don't think everything needs to be a sight adjustment either. His speed forces help or the corner to bail out early.
Yes but the problem is, unless he's wide open, there's a good chance he's not going to catch it, we as fans see it so DC's definitely see it, so there's no need to press him or give over the top help
I haven't seen him drop a wide open pass on a go route. He dropped one wide open pass against the Ravens. But teams aren't going to depend on him dropping a ball. Since he can run by CBs he will get safety help over the top..

Roethlisberger Explains Coates’ Continued Limited Usage On Offense

In the*Pittsburgh Steelers*Sunday win over the*New York Giants, second-year wide receiver*Sammie Coates*wasn’t targeted in the passing game and only played a total of 4 offensive snaps. That was a bit surprising being as it was starting to look like Coates might be infused back into the offense once again now that he’s seemingly overcome the two broken fingers on the same hand that he suffered way back in Week 5.
During his Tuesday interview on*93.7 The Fan, quarterback*Ben Roethlisberger*was asked if Coates will potentially be a bigger*part of the offense this coming Sunday in the team’s road game against the*Buffalo Bills
“He’s growing, he keeps doing more things, he’s coming back to us,” Roethlisberger said of Coates, who has just one catch for 4 yards since suffering his injury. “His hands are getting better. It’s not easy to be a wide receiver and have two hurt fingers on the same hand. So, he’s doing some great things on special teams and we targeted him a couple of times in Indianapolis.
“This week [against the Giants], it’s just the game plan wasn’t really there, or the calls weren’t there to get him the ball. We worked the middle of the field because they were taking A.B. [Antonio Brown] away and taking the outside away. And so there were just times that we had a lot of two tight ends sets, three tight end sets, and that’s what we can do having Jesse [James] and D.J. [David Johnson] and Ladarius [Green] on the field at the same time. It gives us a lot of options to run and pass. Hopefully getting X-Man [Xavier Grimble] back will give us more pass options as well. So, having those different sets really is what does it more than lack of having a guy out there in Sammie.”
While the Steelers are using quite a few two and three tight end sets, when they do use three wide receiver sets,*Cobi Hamilton*and*Eli Rogers*have mostly been the ones on the field along with*Antonio Brown. Hamilton, while not really a deep threat, has made a few big catches ever since being promoted from the team’s practice squad several weeks ago, and several of them have come on third downs.
During his Tuesday interview, Roethlisberger was asked to explain why it’s more useful for Hamilton to be on the field over Coates and his answer was quite intriguing.
“When he [Coates] comes on the field, teams are like, ‘Ok, here’s their deep ball guy, let’s take away the deep ball,'” Roethlisberger explained. “So they’ve been looking and knowing, ‘We see him in the game, they’re rotating him and Cobi, they take shorts with Cobi, but when No. 14, Sammie Coates comes into the game, we need to be ready for a deep ball.’
“So, part of it is the defense seeing him coming in for certain situations, but so what that tells me, and tells us, talking to the coaches and an offensive person, is that we need to continue to use him in multiple areas and multiple ways so that we can not give those tendencies away.”
In short, it really seems as though the Steelers view Coates as just a one-trick pony right now and one that has problems catching the football to boot. Until he starts developing other aspects of his route running and becomes a more complete wide receiver, it sounds like his playing time on the offensive side of the football will remain very limited.

Not saying he dropped the ball, but he never fights for the ball, or goes and gets it. In some instances they may have over the top help, but the guy doesn't run good routes, so they'll simply play 10 yards off him so he doesn't run by and dare him to run underneath stuff and not worry about a safety over the top
I will try to watch more closely to see how they are playing him. Hopefully soon we get the Coates from the first 5 games

I agree, even in the Denver playoff game he ran a few crossing routes and made the catch
Even during the earlier games this year he was catching more then go routes.. I would like to think we will get that guy back soon. He is coming up on the end of the healing period for his fingers.

Hard to be really productive with a busted hand at wr. As far as fighting for the ball. I'd envision it stuffed with $100 dollar bills or that it was a game winning catch in the lowB repuS on every play.That stuff is all mental. It's your ball,take it! AB takes it. Play like you're THE guy.

So if this busted hand is stopping catching the ball than why in the world is Tomlin putting him on the field.
I think it's the lack of detail (route running) that is keeping him out if the offense, Dulac said he's been catching the ball great in practice
