Most NFL players are not very bright. Went to the Panthers training camp at Wofford a few years ago and was surprised by all the tricked out Bentleys, Jags and Mercedes, etc. Spending a hug amount of money on depreciating assets and then further devaluing them with tacky customizations is an example of their lack of smarts. Spending huge money in a career where the earning power is short is a recipe for failure. When you stop and realize how young these guys are, how unsophisticated most of them are and the fact most will end up bankrupt a short few years after they are done playing it is beyond the pale the NFL or the NFLPA does not have more comprehensive programs to help and guide these players. Maybe they should agree that a very large part of the signing bonus and salaries should be put into annuities to protect the players from themselves. Since the NFL is a de facto monopoly there is not a competitor that would steal the players away f they balk at this type of arrangement . Look at how well it worked out for Bobby Bonilla who is still collection a million a year from the Mets.
