Myles Garrett traded to the Rams?!?!

The Browns dump a HUGE contract, load up on picks... Browns won this hands down. They weren't a super bowl team with Garrett, so it doesn't move the needle one way or another. They are rebuilding. It might be the first really good move the Browns have made in the last decade. Now can they make two good moves in a row?

Anybody who thinks dealing Garrett for Verse and draft picks makes a team better is wrong. Verse is good, maybe an 8 sack guy. He is basically Alex Highsmith, a 3rd rounder.

Meanwhile, you lose a guy who can demolish an offense. Then you draft three players, hoping - praying - they are as good as the guy you traded. But they won't be. I can all but guarantee that the three players they draft will combine for zero NFL defensive player of the year awards, zero MVP awards, almost certainly zero MVP votes, and probably zero NFL defensive player of the year votes.

So you wind up with four guys, none of whom is remotely as good as Garrett. It's the equivalent of trading Ohtani for four really good players. Stupid. Ohtani and three other even mediocre guys >>> the four guys you get in return. Ohtani and one good player plus two lousy players >>>>>> four good players, since you have Ohtani and a good player plus two roster spots to improve the team further.
Garrett wanted out for so long. They had to know that was a potential headache if it wasn’t already.

But yeah I wouldn’t be shocked if it played out very similar to what you are saying.

Interesting. Before this the Rams traded for McDuffie for a 1st,3rd,5th and 6th. Then made him the highest paid CB.

Signed Stafford to a 55 million dollar deal who they also gave up 2#1’s and a 3rd when they acquired him. Plus Goff.

…..Now giving up a 1st,2nd and 3rd for the highest paid non qb contract in football.

Obviously they have been taking a different path than most teams on building a SB caliber roster.

While quite a few are saying this is a win for the Browns, the Rams have had quite a successful run at this strategy.
What exactly have the Browns done?

For some of the older fans here, a bit of George Allen - and it's working. Helps to have a coach like McVay running the offense. Rams under McVay, 92-57, 10-6 in playoffs, 2 SB appearances, 1 SB title.

We will see how it plays out, but I'm guessing it will end up as more of a win win for both. The Rams didn't make this trade looking at three years from now.

The Rams know they only have a short window with their current group to get another super bowl before they have to reset a little. The Rams have been very successful drafting, hiring quality coaches, and trading for the right pieces using draft capital under McVay. McVay likes to trade picks for proven players.

They know they will be picking in in the high twenties, so trading a first for the Rams isn't like the Browns trading a 1st. Besides, the Browns chances of actually drafting multiple quality picks across multiple drafts has historically proven to be something that simply is not going to happen. They won't be able to get the owner far enough away from the process to be successful there.

Yeah, that theory of sucking and stockpiling picks and then drafting all those game-changers and going 5-12 again and getting more great picks and then going 8-9 and then drafting another 4 QB's who don't work out and going 5-12 and repeating the process again and again and again, that has been incredibly successful.

The Browns have implemented the Tomlin approach of repeating what doesn't work, except that instead of going 10-7 and getting blown out in the 1st round, the Clowns go 5-12 and get ready for another amaaaazing draft!

The Rams are going to be very good again this year, so that 2027 first round pick will be late, likely in the very high twenties or early thirties. Stafford's probably got just a few good/great years left, so the trade makes sense from LA's win-now perspective.
Provided disaster doesn’t strike with significant injuries or they lose many close games the could have, or should have, won. If I were an NFL GM, I’d have a seriously hard time trading a first round pick without knowing if it was #1 or #31.

Anything short of a Super Bowl Championship and it’s not a win for the Rams.

The trading of picks for players seemed to work out well for the Rams previously considering they won a super bowl because of it. It's not like it's the first time for them. It's a dangerous practice for sure, but one they have had success with so far.

The Browns are boosting their chance of trading for a top pick in next year's draft. The problem, what team bad enough to draft Arch Manning--I do anticipate he'll be the top prospect--is going to pass on him? Outside of maybe the Raiders, I'm not sure there is a bad team with a young QB who wouldn't take Arch--including the Titans and Giants.

I actually love this deal for the Rams. The picks are spread out and while they're losing a good player in Verse, they're gaining a game wrecker for a team that should once again be a Super Bowl contender.

Agree, but Garrett could have left last year and instead took the money to stay with a bad team.
F Myles Garrett with DIC's red hot poker.
It's not like the Browns will know what to do with more draft picks.
Now watch Mason Rudolph get traded to the Cardinals. :D
