Moving forward with McCarthy

Nate got a second interview in Cleveland and Buffalo is lining him up for one as well.

I don’t know what McCarthy has going on behind the scenes, but I’d bet he is working on something…..related to sub-coach hiring.

Salute the nation

Who's out?
OC Arthur Smith to Ohio State
DC Teryl Austin - ARII talked about a new DC
OL Pat Meyer - ARII also tossed in a new OL coach.

DL coach Karl Dunbar is out.
OLB coach Denzel Martin is interviewing elsewhere.

I don't know if this has been posted yet,but here's a message from your new Pittsburgh Steelers HC.

Well that definitely put some wind in my sails.

Man! Winning that Superbowl over us in 2010 must've been hell on him! lol

Seriously though, very nice sentiments, I wish Coach McCarthy nothing but the best here

I was pretty dissapointed initially can't lie but putting some thought in. Assuming that A Rod comes back next year and they add weapons in the draft, they could contend for the division and see what happens if they do. I think judging by the conference today you can eliminate them taking the Alabama kid in the first round which in my opinion would be a horrifying reach. So a likely scenario would be Will Howard with Rodgers and McCarthy. Im confident in McCarthy's ability to tell if the kid can be the future of the franchise or not. Especially with his job likely depending on it.

At 21, I don’t see him as a reach.

I think that is good value for him there…

I'd take everything in the presser with a grain of salt. He wasn't going to bash the roster or ARod, hoping he has some key changes in mind.

I worry when I read reports about his arm strength not being all that great, not gonna fly in the AFC North. He's also slight of build. Seems to be the anti-Steeler prototype.

I guess they will glue into tapes and the combine.

If they agree with you and he is on the board at 21 he will be available at 22.

The press latched onto the QBs.

Locally, they equated to McCarthy saying he was excited to work with Howard as he'll turn Howard into a star.

Nationally, it was he would love for Rodgers to return. The national media loves Rodgers in the news cycle.

The state of the roster along with a few other items were standard press conference fodder. All praise for the guys currently in the building to get off on the right foot. Once the meetings and practices start, the real evaluation begins.

Howard might have some upside, especially with a coach like McCarthy, but the problem is that McCarthy has basically no game video at the NFL level from Howard's rookie year to base anything on.

Though teams do film practices, Howard missed the entire preseason, and the Steelers missed more than an opportunity to lock up the division when they lost to the Browns late in the season.

They could have treated the Ravens game as an exhibition of sorts and got a great look at Howard.

They might pursue someone like Malik Willis or Kyler Murray more aggressively than many fans would be comfortable with.

We still don't know exactly how high McCarthy is on Howard, despite the positive rhetoric to this point.

The value being floated out there is a Day 2 pick for Murray. Not sure what his cap hit would be. I don't think he's good enough to make that type of move despite being possibly one of the only options this offseason.

It is rather strange having someone who kept you from winning that seventh superbowl, now your head coach.

The same could be said for having Rodgers at quarterback last season, but as professionals that's what they get paid to do.

I'm sure a chunk of McCarthy deep down inside had wished it was another team they had to beat.

Let's hope he can help get us back the one we lost. I'm going to guess we will use the entire field on offense next season...lol. That in itself will be a major accomplishment.

Austin's contract was up anyway and typically that's how they get rid of coordinators and assistants who suck, they let their contracts expire.
He wasn't coming back regardless.

People been wanting an offensive-minded HC, well there you go.
I will hope for the best. PS4L.

In other news, I think it's hilarious that no one wants the Stains HC job. Maybe Austin would take it.

Yeah they can let that float that right down the stream. Guy is just an injury waiting to happen.

More than half his career.. injuries affected his season.

Yeah for me I don’t make that move and jump on the crazy train.

Bad omen...after Deebo at 4:16 says " we'll see what Will can do" he farts...and it was weak...tells me he doesn't really believe in Will. If he did believe it would have been a Taco Bell 5 layer burrito banger letting us know Howard is the franchise.

Bring on Mac Jones..let's do this. It will probably take a 2nd to get him from the 9ers. Make it so.

I watched the kid play at least 5 times this year. In what world would you say he looked better then Will Howard to justify using the 21st pick where you could get a stud at wr, corner or DT.

I like his release I like his accuracy. I am not putting all my eggs in Howard’s basket. I am sure neither will the Steelers.

He was slated to go higher and dropped. That is where the grey area comes in. How far should he drop.

I am happy with your second options, still with the critical nature of the QB position I presume the Steelers draft one.

I am not locked into drafting him in 1 but I also like some things about him.

If McCarthy is going to run a West Coast offense in Pittsburgh you need a QB that can throw those middle routes & short routes with some accuracy & velocity.

He gets zero love here, but I reckon that the best available option not getting drafted & added to the squad is Mason Rudolph, at least short term.

If you get 2-3 new WR's to team up with Metcalf, start using Friermuth & have a healthy dose of Jaylen Warren & Kaleb Johnson- I think Rudolph can be the bridge QB.

I mentioned elsewhere that Jimmy Garrapolo or Cooper Rush might work too- and they could.

I don't know if McCarthy is a great QB 'developer' or if he's good at putting QB's in the best position to maximise what they can do. He was 5-1 with Cooper Rush. And in my opinion- Cooper Rush is not as good a QB as Mason Rudolph.

So the question is- can Rudolph run a West Coast offense with appropriate weapons? Hopefully. What I am pretty certain of is- given the chance, he'll do his best. I don't think anyone can question his commitment or effort.

I still think Nussmeier in late Rd 2 or Early Rd 3 sounds about right too. That gives the Steelers a chance to swing at an early pick at WR and maybe adding someone in FA like Marquise Brown or even Deebo Samuel. I'd even double down & add a mid round WR & re-sign Austin.

Load the WR room & give the QB the chance to succeed.

Not sure there is a scenario that Rudy is the best option. Maybe a porn mustache competition…
