Most underrated Steelers

Rocky Bleier, Charlie Batch, William Gay.

Ike Taylor was most definitely NOT underrated.

Darren Perry was underrated. Great player overshadowed by Woodson and Lake.

Not underrated here...but the national media never considered Ike one of the best corners in the league...when he might have been THE BEST corner in the league for a decade. The national media never really considered him too much because he didn't have the interceptions (happens when you can't catch)...

...but they always put Ike on the other team's best WR...and Ike would shut them out.

Ike Taylor might be the most underrated Steeler of all time.

dri archer... dude was the theme of the longest thread in website history. But not a single vote to pro bowl in 2 years

Certainly under rated when you compare him to his replacement Jacoby Jones lol

Totally agree. Ike was great and for a decent period of time. A lot of people just seemed to be focused on the fact he had the worst hands ever.

He was a fourth round project that turned in to one of the best DB in team history. I still laugh at the fact when he was drafted Mark Madden called him the worst Steelers draft pick in history.

Fast Willie Parker. He only had three good seasons but his best was the year we won it all against the Seahawks and he broke an NFL record with the longest TD run in super bowl history. I honestly don't think we win that game without him or make it to the playoffs without him.

I'm sorry, but Ike Taylor the best corner in the league for a decade???? Are you kidding me?? THAT is some strong homerism if I've ever seen it.

I don't feel like Foster was underrated. He was solid for 3 years but then he stopped working and was lazy.

Barry Foster was dominant in 1992 and the start of 1993 -- and that was it.

I have an old tape of the Steelers/Browns playoff game in 1994 and truthfully speaking, especially after getting to watch Jerome Bettis in his prime years -- at least by that time Foster really benefitted from the system more than his being special. He wasn't even remotely close in terms of footwork or vision. Foster ran straight ahead through very large holes and wasn't making anybody miss.

Honestly -- I would consider Mendenhall more under rated. Now I know that when that name is said most people have more of a negative outlook on Mendenhall considering:
  • The 4th quarter fumble in the Super Bowl on the GB 33; the Steelers had slowly taken control back of the game until that back breaker.
  • His asinine Muslim comments
  • That he danced around too much

But you can argue that they don't get into the Super Bowl without him in 2010 period -- nor do they make a game of it after the 21-3 start.
  • He was a huge contributor to the 3-1 start without Ben that year: 411 yards rushing and 4 TDs
  • He scored 4 TDs in the 2010 playoffs and nearly topped 100 yards in the first half of the AFC Championship vs. the Jets that year.
  • He had some big runs in the Super Bowl itself and it was the running game that was slowly wrestling the control of that Super Bowl back to the Steelers -- Ben was not getting it done in the passing game (remember two straight incompletions and a sack that led to Shuisam trying to kick a 52 yarder -- which was out of his range, all we needed was 1 good completion to get into his 40-45 yard range where he never missed).

Mendenhall was about to top 100 yards in 3 consecutive seasons before the ACL tear in 2011, and he was a major component of the 2011 offense. He never came back from that injury but for a 4 year stretch starting in 2009, he had some great performances (behind that **** offensive line) and was generally a solid contributor. He'll never be fondly remembered here )arguably for good reason -- but he was better than he'll get credit for.

Louis Lipps should be on that list..

Outstanding player who most casual Steeler fans 35 years of age and under, have never heard of..

Didn't have outstanding hamstrings! Lipps was incredible in 1984 and 1985 (set the team TD record that stood for over 2 decades). But I never saw anyone with more trouble with hamstring injuries -- or maybe he was perfectly fine but playing with QBs like Malone and Brister had him phone it in sick!

Ike Taylor was very underrated and mostly by people on here and other Steelers fans. Most complained about him all the time on here even though he was one of the best cover CB's in his prime. He didn't get the credit he deserved because the lug head couldn't catch the damn ball. But, as far as cover skills, he was very underrated/underappreciated on here and by most Steelers fans.

I couldn't laugh at that because it would lend credence to the belief that anything he says can be taken seriously.

Ike did a great job at being a great cover corner, he didn't generate big plays but teams didn't generate big plays on him either.

Shields
Zo Jackson
Bruce Davis
Ricardo Coclough
Dri Archer

Guys were just never used right here

For real tho...Orpheus Roye, one of the best ST wedge busters to ever play the game. Also loved watching Cowher spit all over screaming his name when he'd do something stupid on a defensive snap.

Hoge was a workhorse.

Pouncey since everyone here seems to think he's average.

Greg Warren. Perfect long snapper

You are confusing average and overpaid

I'll never forget when Roye knocked that dude out from Jacksonville on a kickoff and the dude just laid there with both arms sticking straight up in the air.

Marvel Smith, we lost him for most of 2003 and finished with 6 wins, then in 2005 he was injured when we lost to Baltimore, Cincy, and Indy. Everyone remembers Ben being hurt in 2005, but missing Smith was big as well.

DeShea Townsend
Aaron Smith
Justin Hartwig

Glen Edwards
Larry Brown
Jim Smith

These guys are so underrated I barely know who they are without googling them. I _think_ Brown was a CB and Smith a WR? How often did they even see the field?

Tunch he was just a great technician..Larry Brown was a TE and then a tackle. Caught a TD IN Super Bowl 1
IX.

The reason I disagree is making pics is a huge part of being a good CB. Sure, it's not the "end all" but when you think of the BEST CBs, they make plays and get turnovers. Ike was exceptionally poor in this area, so it DOES diminish his rankings, as it should. Quick, name the best CBs you can think of; what do they all have in common? They defend passes (agreed Ike could do this) AND they create ints (He has 2 x 4 boards for hands).

Best CBs....Woodson, Deion, Darrell Green, Revis, Ty Law, Eric Allen, Charles Woodson, Mel Blount.....al had loads of ints. There is no way Ike was _EVER_ the best CB in his era. No way.

I wouldn't necessarily say that he is underrated, but certainly you don't hear many people bring up the name of Jon Kolb. He was overshadowed by Webster.
