Most underrated Steelers

We all know it's hard to do a Steelers top 10 players, as it's too hard to pair down to just 10 of the greatest Steelers.

But how about the most underrated Steelers?

In no particular order....

Barry Foster. His only knock is he didn't play for many seasons. Chuck Noll called him, "The toughest player I have even seen." Oddly, even with such accolades by Noll, he never saw playing time until Cowher became head coach, at which time Banana Barry nearly led the league in rushing, once finally given carries. His downfall was he just could no longer grind after he got his big contract. But for a brief time, he was one of the best backs in the entire NFL.

Mike Merriweather. Was on his way to being another great Steeler OLB. But he wanted paid, and Rooneys didn't want to pay him, so off he went to MN. But before he left, he was playing at a Ham, Lloyd, Porter, Harrison level.

Yancey Thigpen. His knock was that he was hurt significant;y every other year, but when healthy, he was a top 5 kind of WR.

John Jackson. He was a stud LT, but is rarely ever remembered. He was the boss.

Frankie Pollard. Was on terrible Steeler teams in the 80's (Well, terrible by our standards, Browns fans would think they were good years for the most part). He was a short, tough back, who never got his due. Had he been on better teams, he would have probably been remembered and mentioned more often.

Deshea Townsend. Very solid. Never got much love, but he was much better than given credit for.

Justin Strzelczyk. Underrated OT who died a mysterious death (drove 100 mph, going wrong way on interstate, into a truck with police chasing him). No one knows why, but he was a good player.

I don't think any Steeler was ever more underrated than Randy Grossman ......who bye the way got his nickname the "Rabbi" from another somewhat under rated fella named Dwight White

That's a pretty good underrated list. Your mention of Mike Merriweather brought to mind another underrated LB from the 80's, David Little.

Dino, I agree on Louie Lipps...that was my dude when I was a kid and I wanted to grow up to be an NFL WR. Lynn Swann was my all time idol as a kid and Lipps was my favorite active Steeler at the time.

this year perhaps Gilbert -IMO a pro bowl caliber year - Gay - as he put together quietly perhaps his best year

little older Aaron Smith - He was a steady force against the run that too often was rated lower than I think he deserved in NFL mags...

0lsavsky - a ILBer that maybe gets lost a little with so many greats at the position...

Kirkland - Before he ate himself out of the league Big Man could really get after it

and my number one

Jason Gildon for being a Steelers sack leader perhaps no other Steelers linebacker (Timmons included) was ridiculed more...

I don't feel like Foster was underrated. He was solid for 3 years but then he stopped working and was lazy.

Frank Pollard. He was a bowling ball of a RB.

Others- Mike Wagner, David Little.

Foster's problem wasn't he was lazy. He was constantly injured.

Dan Krieder

Wasn't Foster a coke head or something

I think you are thinking of Tim Worley.

as Bam Bam was the weed kingpin

Hoge was a workhorse.

Pouncey since everyone here seems to think he's average.

Greg Warren. Perfect long snapper

Greg Warren. Perfect ARROGANT long snapper

Agree his underated in both his ability and his arrogance......

William Gay is playing a little better, but hasn't been tested this year as to the TALENT opposite him sucked up all the target(s). So I can't say his underated as I think his accolade merits his talent level.

Salute the nation

Lipps should be considered, he was the only playmaker they had with junk QBs. Lloyd should be on this list.

He was a baaaaaddd man. Doesn't get enough love.

dri archer... dude was the theme of the longest thread in website history. But not a single vote to pro bowl in 2 years

Ike Taylor was most definitely NOT underrated.

Darren Perry was underrated. Great player overshadowed by Woodson and Lake.
