We all know it's hard to do a Steelers top 10 players, as it's too hard to pair down to just 10 of the greatest Steelers.
But how about the most underrated Steelers?
In no particular order....
Barry Foster. His only knock is he didn't play for many seasons. Chuck Noll called him, "The toughest player I have even seen." Oddly, even with such accolades by Noll, he never saw playing time until Cowher became head coach, at which time Banana Barry nearly led the league in rushing, once finally given carries. His downfall was he just could no longer grind after he got his big contract. But for a brief time, he was one of the best backs in the entire NFL.
Mike Merriweather. Was on his way to being another great Steeler OLB. But he wanted paid, and Rooneys didn't want to pay him, so off he went to MN. But before he left, he was playing at a Ham, Lloyd, Porter, Harrison level.
Yancey Thigpen. His knock was that he was hurt significant;y every other year, but when healthy, he was a top 5 kind of WR.
John Jackson. He was a stud LT, but is rarely ever remembered. He was the boss.
Frankie Pollard. Was on terrible Steeler teams in the 80's (Well, terrible by our standards, Browns fans would think they were good years for the most part). He was a short, tough back, who never got his due. Had he been on better teams, he would have probably been remembered and mentioned more often.
Deshea Townsend. Very solid. Never got much love, but he was much better than given credit for.
Justin Strzelczyk. Underrated OT who died a mysterious death (drove 100 mph, going wrong way on interstate, into a truck with police chasing him). No one knows why, but he was a good player.
