More Important Play in Steeler History

Immaculate Reception or Holmes SB43

Cope, in fairness there is no definitive shot that shows Franco didn't pick the ball up off the turf as many Raiders and Raider fans say he did.

Although in a classic memory moment, the folks who own the season seats and have forever were at that game and I asked Marcia (The wife) about it. I asked her "Did he catch it?" and she said without any hesitation whatsoever, "Absolutely!"

; - ) How can you argue with that?

As for this -

Love all you out of state fans, but most of you just don't get it. You don’t.

I can only assume that means all those Pittsburgher folks who move away must be compelled to "give up" their fanship. They must "not get it" eh? I mean how could somebody with such a vital and life-affirming tie to the team and community ever consider leaving. That would be some kind of horrific treason that couldn't be forgiven. I mean, we could give a **** that you can't take care of your family. You've got your "getting it" to contend with. And all those out-of-state wanna be loser fans - well **** em. They just help pay for jerseys and stadium upgrades. Perhaps a contract extension here and there eh?

All you guys and gals with the Holmes catch......

It was second down. There was 42 seconds on the clock when the ball was snapped. We were on the six yard line.
Nobody is disputing it wasn't an UN-FN-BELIEVABLE throw and catch. Ben threw it to the ONLY spot possible......over three defenders....and Santonio made a Swann-esque ballet type adjustment with precision footwork and toe-tapping. It was AMAZING!
Was the Ben to Santonio WAY MORE skillful than the Immaculate Reception? Unquestionably.
Was the Immaculate Reception a one in a trillion dumb freak luck occurrence that met Franco's "never give up on a play" attitude and completely coincidental? Absolutely.
I don't think anyone is challenging these things.

We're are overly blessed with ridiculously awesome plays ( Swann's 2 acrobatic catches, Fast Wille's record breaker, Randle El to Hines, etc. ) in the big moments.
WHY exactly is the Ben/Santonio more IMPORTANT than the Immaculate Reception in our history?

Looks pretty clear to me his feet are down, Cope.

Sent from my SM-G930V using Steeler Nation mobile app

What about Troy's pick 6 against the Ravens in the AFC Championship game? I agree it's not #1, but it's pretty damn high on the list.

The Steelers are blessed.

Clearly God is a Steelers fan.

The immaculate reception is more important to the fans and the legacy... its bs that the play led to the super bowls though... all it did was make a good story... the talent those teams had with the coaching was going to win regardless...

The Holmes catch directly led to a super bowl win...

If the immaculate reception is blown dead the steelers have a little less facetime on espn flashbacks... if the holmes catch doesnt happen, we are not the sole leaders in super bowl wins

wait...weren't we only down by 3, anyway? and in fg range?? so there's a good chance that, at worst, that superbowl would've gone to OT, I suppose??

I'm not trolling here, but I've never seen a replay that ever difinitively showed me that Holmes had both toes in contact with the turf when he caught the ball. It was a bang bang play, ruled a TD on the field, so the replay had to show beyond a doubt, that it was not a TD. The replay showed that. But if the call was reversed and not ruled a TD, and Tomlin challenged, I don't think the play would have been ruled a TD.

The best picture/angle I have of this play is a blowup that I have hanging on my wall. One toe is firmly planted in the grass, the other is not, but looks to be touching the top of the blades of grass. From what I've seen watching football, both feet must be in contact with the ground, not the grass, to be a complete catch. It was fortunate that the play went the way it did for us, and even adds a little mystique for me. The way all great plays do.

The same can be said about Harrison's return. Was he down before he crossed the plane? That was a close review as well. But the odds were ever in the Steelers favor that game!

he had both feet down.

I also heard that the story of Rooney winning a ton at the track is true. He won a parlay, and used the winnings to pay for the Steelers.

Urban legend. He already owned the team when he won the parlay. The parlay won him around 300,000 which comes to something like 5 million in today's money. This happened in 1936, The Chief founded the team (as the Pirates) in 1933. Though there is plenty of evidence that his gambling winnings helped keep the team going early. This subject has been touched upon in many books, including "Their Life's Work". This wikepedia link sums it up nicely:

Harrison's inception was a bigger play than the ben to Holmes. Harrison totally baited a future hof qb into throwing into the end zone, he picks it off, runs full length of the field, not only preventing the cards from going ahead and but gave us a td. To me it's the defense equivalent the Franco catch. Totally one of the great steeler defensive plays of all time.

Yeah we were down 3 so a FG only ties it, then it, I'll take the win.

Like I said..

Just so I'm clear. People are disputing out of towners understanding of the Steelers and Cope is casting doubt upon Ben to Holmes to try to win an argument. Well that is some clear fan loyalty right there..

I simply took it to mean Steeler fans who are not from Pittsburgh (not that there's anything wrong with that) and weren't here to witness the complete change in attitude of the entire region when the Steelers started winning Super Bowls. And that roll started with Franco's catch. I don't think any offense was intended.
For example, we can point to the greatest play in NFL history that started our dynasty. All the Pats**** can point to is when cheating started their dynasty.

The debate was a damn good one. Both sides with solid points.

And I am as diehard as they come but just moved to the Burgh 6 years ago. And my stance remains unchanged in favor of the Immaculate.

If you take out this and you take out that..........

thing is Steelers are about the tradition and a certain amount of believing.

The Terrible even has it's Urban Legends behind it.

And how I could easily take something out of a historical significance equation

why would I want to?

It all goes together in a plethora of win.

A Immaculate reception, a immaculate extension, A tippy toe THE CATCH TD, A bunch of hair making a bad day for Flacco and the roadkill birds.A out of breath Deebo with fans who were out of breath watching the play. A Swan like leap, A Hines Ward wide smile catching a TD in a wide open end zone.

And I could go on and on and on.

A beautiful book

A factory of fap fabulous plays

But for me the Immaculate Reception was a turning point

and a beginning of all this that is special

like the Steelers Garden of Eden

in the beginningggggggggggggg

hell isn't the beginning of every special collection of special things

stick out as something special?

This was some good clean debate. It's appreciated. The board is on fire the last month. Multiple days with over 1,000 posts.

For us out of staters. I get the argument. As fans we all invest our time and emotion into a team that means something to us. One thing for us out of staters is we don't understand the culture movement or whatever the Steelers mean. Studying the history of the team. The 70s team was something special. Hearing from the local yinzers in PGH. You appreciate their accounts and input. I like the Steelers cause my dad saw them on tv when he was little. He adopted them and became a die hard fan. So I was born into being a Steelers fan. Adopted the Pens and Pirates as a result. Do I consider myself a better fan than anyone else? No. A true fan stays by win or lose, regardless of where they live too.

Guys like wig, etc. I always enjoy reading his input. Wig has some really great post. Solid opinions etc. But to hear the history for those who've witnessed the ups and downs first hand. Makes us out of staters appreciate it more

3rd and long deep pass to Ernie Mills in the AFCCG against the Colts.

Great job J, I'm noticing old posters coming out of the woodwork. It's nice to have actual debate and opinion sharing instead of hate spewing and insults. We'll keep that for the trolls!

Kudos!

PS. I'm surprised the posts are that high since we got rid of our top poster, and he took all his friends away.,,
