Modern 34 defense discussion

That's an interesting idea but not against 5 WRs... one of those ILBs is gonna be toast.
Kinda my initial point. It's hard to run nostalgic looks against modern offenses. Kinda like on paper you should be able to spend money and picks on all star lineman, all pro running backs. Play a really good fullback and pay very little on a Q. Just run over these thinned out dline and skinny linebackers. We'll Im sure someone paid a lot more then me has also thought about that.

If they go 5 wide then you blitz them out of it. I have more faith in our starting ILBS then I do our 4th or 5th CB. 5 wide, you send 6, someone is getting there real quickly.

Let's face it, Tomlin is and has been trying to run his version of the Tampa 2, problem is we don't have Derrick Brooks or John Lynch and the DE's in the Tampa 2 were 270lbs, Watt and Highsmith are like 245lbs. The rules and game from when the Tampa 2 was winning the super Bowl and giving teams trouble have changed. Derrick Brooks wasn't covering many Wr's back then, because it wasn't a pass happy league it is now.

For me, give me Heyward, Benton, Harmon as my starters, rotate DT's/DE's through there, I'm going 3 bigs almost every down to help vs the run and get a good push on passing plays, if I have the depth, then Watt, Highsmith, Queen at LB's, then my back 5. I'm rushing 5 guys alot of the time trying to just win the LOS battle, get a good push vs the run or pass, this will help take some of the attention off Watt if we have 4 other guys coming.

Watt is listed at 252 and Highsmith 242. The Steelers use players' rookie weights. Just looking at both guys now, they have to weigh at least 260-265 lbs. Watt's arms alone look to be about 50 lbs each.

Yeah you're probably right, but Baltimore starting OT's are 310+, that's still a 50lb advantage, give me 3 guys that are around 300 the majority of the time, rather than only 2, so we are not at such a size disadvantage every game, another reason our defense seems to wear down late in seasons, to go along with the offense unable to sustain drives with any consistency. Whatever we've been doing hasn't been working

1st and 10, play Harmon, Benton, and Cam on the DL, Watt and Highsmith OLB, Wilson and Queen ILB. "Oh, teams are going to pass!" Fine. Watt, Highsmith, Cam and likely Harmon are excellent pass rushers. The CB trio could be quite good. Wilson is very good in coverage. So go ahead and pass.

2nd and 10 or 15 coming right up ...

Watt is an elite run defender and Highsmith is really good, probably one of the better edge defenders. They aren't the issue. Heyward is elite as well and the defense does great when he's on the field. I think it's the rest of the IDL and the ILBs (outside of Elandon Roberts who they should've kept). Heyward is a hybrid between eras. He broke into the league under Dick LeBeau when the IDL valued sound technique and stopping the run before transitioning to generating pressure.

Enter Benton and the other defenders who have been brought in to generate interior rush. They do alright in this aspect, but the run defense just isn't there. Factor in the ILBs, Queen was bad in this area last year and Wilson was mediocre. Roberts was an absolute stud and they let him walk. I think they can get back to a more balanced approach in terms of roles for the IDL and ILBs are probably a relative lost cause. I think they'll improve from last year, but there is no true thumper in the room.
