Mock has Steelers trading up for QB

Think they still really like Rudolph. We got a good look at how he has progressed in week 17. Trading up for a QB now and giving up those picks would be unwise. We need all the picks to fill our glaring roster holes as possible.

I don't think one game made them like him anymore or less than what they did. I believe they don't see him as the future, which I think is the right mindset.

Either way, we aren't taking a QB in this year's draft which is the right move.
 
We need ALL our picks.
We need to stockpile picks.
We should even consider trading back in certain instances to collect more picks.
We have no money.
The cheapest players that are NOT retreads/castaways, that actually have potential still, are draft picks.
LOAD up and stock the cupboards!
 
i dont see the jets giving on darnold so quick unless thay had pick 1 hell if i were them i would trade to 3 or 4 and take eithier bama WR and load up D, if darnold is on the block would be nice to swing a deal involving future picks
 
I don’t see us sacrificing our future for a QB just yet. If Ben retires and Rudolph sucks we’ll be a lot closer to top 10 in 2022. I like Lance but lets be honest. He plays against trash schools and has one year under his belt. Steve McNair is a good comparison and Steve ended up being a good QB but his learning curve was huge. And I believe Steve was a 3 year starter at Alcorn State.

If a QB falls that the Steelers have a high grade on I’m good with picking a QB but trading away your future when we have way more holes than QB is setting up that QB to fail and the team. I mean we potentially have QB, RB, WR, TE, LT, LG, OC, DT, OLB, CB and maybe even punter to replace as starters for 2021. I think filling holes is our biggest priority.

That may be so, but if Rudolph isn't brought back we will need a QB to back up Ben unless you're ok with Dobbs as the #2, and then you'd still need a #3.

Trading draft collateral to make a big jump right now isn't the play we need. If anything we need to move back and collect more draft picks to help with our highly likely cap issues.

I think the best bet once we know what Ben is doing would be to find a QB on the market and sign him like the Dolphins did with Fitzpatrick so we can at least have a place holder QB for a season or two and then we can go into the draft looking for the future, but that's not this offseason.
 
I don't know about the viability of it. but I know this. If you have to give up a large part of a draft to get a guy you believe will be a cornerstone starting QB, you do it. The rebuild would be right QB, right coach. Rebuilt.

I'd rather combine picks to move to get an impact player than accumulate picks. You don't win games with draft picks, you win them with good players.
 
Of course they have the Steelers paying what would have to be a king's ransom to move up to take a guy most of us have never heard of who plays against teams most of could not name. they must think Tomlin runs the entire organization.
 
I can see them extending Ben, with the understanding that this is Ben's last season and they'll just bite the bullet in 2022 on his extension to get his cap hit low enough to sign all the guys they want to keep this season. Then in 2022 start who the hell ever at QB, and more than likely finish milddle of the pack and have a decent 1st rounder in the 2023 draft.
So heading into 2023, they'll have Watt and Minkah signed up, Bush going into year 5, Cam and Tuitt are probably off the books, along with Ben, Pouncey, DeCastro. They'll have Dotson, Highsmith, Claypool, Dionte in their prime for a couple more seasons, along with their 2021 and 2022 draft classes going into the 2023 draft.
It's a clean break with Ben, and it's not just a total tear down.
 
If he’s everything they say and more then absolutely. Franchise QB’s don't grow on trees. With that being said their are still a lot of question marks on him which makes it hard to say yes to trading all that for an unknown.
 
Here is where I get interested, is Mac Jones on the board when the Pats pick? Or do they move or not move up for him. I watched him play. It is impossible to evaluate. He had guys three yards open and the team ran at will. BUT, Belichick is bum buddies with Saban. Saban knows. If he is IT, Belichick will know and would get aggressive to get him.

Saban? The same guy who passed on Drew Brees coming to the Dolphins because of a shoulder injury?

Saban knows about as much as the next "greatest scout" out there. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Drew Brees did not play at Alabama. Nick Saban knows how good or average Jones is cause he coached him and knows him. If suddenly the Pats move up to take him its insider info for sure.
 
There is no way Mac Jones is going off the board as the 4th pick in this draft, and there is no way Pitts is lasting until #13. Just total nonsense.

I agree here totally. I think Jones lasts till the Pats pick or damn near it and if they don't move on him I'd have nothing to do with him even when the Steelers pick.
 
A few here in the past have said the Steelers QB of the future is not on the roster,...without much disagreement from anyone.

I have a gut feeling he is.

IF we were an impact player or two away from #7, I'd be ALL in favor of this.
In most years, I would be in favor of this scenario.
But the Steelers are losing a SCHLOAD of players this off-season. Be it cap casualties, FAs we can't afford to sign, and retirement.
IF Ben retires, it will help a bit to retain a few players to soften the blow.
But IF Ben returns, then we're going to need A LOT of holes filled on the cheap.
I'd rather load up on as many "lottery tickets" in the draft that I could rather than sign aging vets/practice squad players/out of work NFLers.......just this off-season.

I hate to be Negative Nelly, but because of ALL the things this team is facing this off-season, I just don't see us winning anything next season.
I'm not saying to trade back just to accumulate picks if an absolute STUD is sitting there, regardless of round. So I would be reticent to trade back in rounds 1 or 2.
But 3 on back? Depending on how the actual scouts and people in the know rank players, I'd look for willing trade partners looking to move up in those rounds and stockpile to attempt to fill all the voids we're going to have.
 
The Steelers are expected to have 9 draft picks, even in a down year it's going to be a challenge for 9 rookies to make the team. If you can do some maneuvering and find a guy who you think can be a starter or contributor in the middle rounds you do it. You can fill a roster spot with a minimum veteran free agent or an UDFA.
