Obviously Mitchell's time is coming to an end and I'm hoping it's next season. Analyzing the current free agents who would you bring in? I will be honest. None that strike me as a huge upgrade over Mitchell. Sure we could draft one but where we are drafting I don't believe anyone could come in and take over and be an immediate upgrade. Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.

Reggie Nelson
Nate Allen
Darius Butler
Michael Thomas
Corey Graham
Cody Davis
LaMarcus Joyner
Nate Ebner
Deshawn Shead
Eddie Pleasant
Keith Tandy
Tre Boston
Jairus Byrd
Rafael Bush
Terrence Brooks
Adrian Phillips
Antone Exum
Isaiah Johnson
Walt Aikens

Tre Boston would be a HUGE upgrade. Hell, I think Wilcox made more plays in limited defense than Mitchell did all season.

I believe we had Tre Boston in for a visit last offseason.

the only guys i'd be interested in are:
Deshawn Shead, Deshawn Shead and Terrence Brooks
size and speed

Lamarcus Joyner would be a great get but he will probably be too expensive.
I thought Kenny Vaccaro was also going to be available?

The FO needs to find a way to bring in one of these guys. You save 4-5mil from cutting Mitchell. You can't tell me there isn't a way to bring in either one of those guys
and still keep us under the cap.

They will draft a free safety, but you could easily move Haden or Sutton to FS and have a better defense right now.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I keep going back to our failure in closing the deal with Eric Weddle. What could have been? I think he would have made a difference.

Draft a safety. Yes. Move Haden our best CB or Sutton another up and coming CB to FS. No thank you! It's an entirely different position.

Yea... Not sure what happened there?

William Gay would make a better FS than our current MOUTh that is there

Salute the nation

It would be very difficult for an incoming FA to not be an improvement. He doesn't make any plays

You could leave the spot vacant and prevent 2 personal fouls calls every game.

At least Anthony Smith could tackle. Mitchell sucks.

No way do I move Sutton or Haden. They are Corners, and good ones at that. Gay is the next logical choice. He's older, he understands defense, he can tackle, and he's a playmaker. He's also under contract for $1.5M so it would be nice to have a starter at that salary and use the rest on an ILB or OLB in free agency.

Gay is the dime corner, and is already playing deep safety in the dime as a deep half cover 2 safety. The younger corners are stepping up, Sutton should take the dime spot next year, and we still have Allen up and coming. The numbers game should have Gay thinking he needs to make the change to give him the best chance of earning a salary next season.

I'm not 100% sure on that.

Smith started 19 games and had 7 ints

Mitchell has started 83 games and has 10 ints.

The problem is that when he wasn't intercepting balls he was a horrific liability in coverage. Not that Mitchell isn't a liability sometimes but when you look at their careers as a whole it isn't close. Mitchell has been pretty decent over several years before and after he got here. He has regressed, I agree. But Smith's career basically flamed out after what...two years? And it was because he couldn't cover anybody. When you've intercepted 7 balls in 19 games and you still get shipped off that fast, it's bad.

Smith sucked no doubt, but he made plays at a far better rate than Mitchell has.
