Minkah Fitzpatrick analysis

Pittsburgh is allowing 50% of 3rd down to be converted. This is tied for 27th to 28th worst in the NFL. Given the low quality of opponents the Steelers have played, this is concerning. Tomlin coaches 3rd down, so I hear. He needs to figure it out.

Well ..... What did you hear about today's 3rd and 4th down defense. And, since you were more than willing to say that you've heard that Tomlin coaches 3rd down, are you willing to give him props for what happened today? Inquiring minds want to know.

The secondary makes some plays but they sure miss tackles and coverages to give up some big plays especially on third and long

If that was Tomlin calling or approving those 3rd and 4th down plays, yep.

Pick 6 today. Hi...

I am delighted with the play. And it isn't like I think he should get an interception every week. But the rest of the game it was back to the 30 yards off. Pretty clearly from that play, you can see that is how he should be used more often. If anything the bigger pats on the back go to the corners today. Nelson was barely targeted against. Haden had his best game of the season with at least three pass defensed and an interception called back on kind of a ticky-tack bullshit. Their play allowed them to stay in their Cover Two for most of the second half.

That's fair...

You know Coach won’t comment positively on the coaching staff. He thinks he knows the game better than them. Probably feels he could have called a better game offensively and defensively..

It is just frustrating as hell.

Last year, they get great secondary play, but don't have a QB.

The QB comes back and the secondary conveniently turns suspect again.

There have been too many missed tackles and blown coverages back there.

Tomlin was supposedly this great secondary coach with the Buccaneers, but I've seen little evidence of that background in his time with the Steelers.

Ugh.....there’s 2 parts to why this take is terrible.

1st is our scheme. 2nd is our draft position.

On the scheme: The Tampa 2 was taken from Steel Curtain Template. The 4-man rush enabled CBs to be more effective. Put DeShea Townsend in that system & he’s a Ronde Barber clone.

The 3-4 Blitzburgh scheme — lot harder for CBs to excel. Rod Woodson is an all time great anomaly. And “prove me wrong” the best CBs for Steelers this century are Ike & Hayden.

In our scheme—the Safety has been critical. And our best DBs have been safeties. Starting with criminally underrated Carnel Lake. Troy is all-time greatest SS & Fitzpatrick immediately transformed the D into NFLs best.

Notice the Safety they signed thru FA that had high hopes for in Mike Mitchell? 2014-2018 — very few turnovers & bad secondary. Sean Davis was underwhelming.

DBs are hard to come by—usually are drafted high & long off the board by our pick.

The highest 2 picks this century have been #11 & #15 (2x)we got Ben, Timmons, Shazier. Most of the blue chip talent DB talent has been gone by our pick—Timmons, though a solid guy—the desired pick was Derrelle Revis (Jets traded up to draft at #14) & can’t argue with other 2 guys.

Burns & Edumunds at #27/#28 were both projected 2nd rounders at best & considered reaches.

Notice that the best DBs we’ve landed this have been via trade or FA?

Troy — 1st time Steelers ever traded up in 1st round—11 spots (from 27 to 16). Fitzpatrick was another 1st round pick (he was #11) & Miami gambled the Ben injury was going to be a top 10. Haden was a gift for Browns to cut, multiple Pro Bowler & #7 overall.

Ike Taylor was an anomaly coming out of a small college with 1-year of CB experience in college. If he’s played multi years or at 1 of the 4 major conferences at CB: at 6’2”, 195 lbs w/ 4.25 40..he’s top 10 pick today.

And he regressed after 2005 under Cowher, even benched. He flourished under Tomlin.

Other attempts have been there.
The most successful FAs of Ryan Clark & Steve Nelson: both have been the 2 gems. Bryant McFadden was okay—hit a ceiling but big part of 2005 Championship. William Gay was great slot guy.

Yeah—there have been misses: Mike Mitchell was massive disappointment with big contract. They moved fast on Justin Gilbert release(8th pick 2014) but he wanted drugs more. Drafted Sean Davis & Sanquez Golson in 2nd; Davis didn’t work out; Golson career never got a chance due to injury.

Bottom line: the system/scheme is not an easy one for DBs; especially CBs. And without aggressively pursuing blue chippers in Draft—especially in league that favors offense—as long as we execute our scheme we’re going to have to be aggressive in finding DBs

Come on, man. Tomlin has been with the Steelers for nearly 14 years, and who has been the best DB drafted and developed by the Steelers during that time? William Gay?

That's too long off a time to not draft one big time DB, regardless of scheme and draft position.
