Mike Tomlin Gets One-Year Extension

Exactly, none of the rest of this thread even matters

What's that old Disraeli maxim about government and the people?

"The people get the government they deserve."

The Rooney's seem to love stability and status quo as long as there is no unrest in the streets nor crash of the stadium economy.

By making this decision now, "they get the team they deserve" for the next 3 years.

Bill Austin, 1968

Heh, I was in high school

I'm not talking about head coach, I'm talking about any coach. Bruce Arians "retired." Dick LeBeau "resigned." Coaches like Haley, Porter, and Saxon didn't have their contracts renewed. I can't recall the last time the Steelers outright fired a coach. It probably hasn't been since Cowher was HC.

Yes, I know Sherman was fired. But was Gilbride? If Gilbride was fired I think he was the last. not counting special teams coaches,,

On January 7, 1999, Gilbride was hired as Offensive Coordinator for the Steelers.[25] The team scored 317 points and finished 6-10, with the 17th ranked offense and 22nd in yards.[26] The next year, the team improved to 9-7, with the 17th ranked offense in the league, scoring 321 points. Following the 2000 season, he was fired.

I'm pretty sure they've fired some OL and secondary coaches under Tomlin, though I could be wrong.

Carnell Lake resigned.
Ray Horton and Scottie Montgomery left for other jobs.

Finally found that Larry Zierlein and Bob Ligashesky were fired in 2010. They were the first staff changes under Tomlin.

Im prepared for an 8-8 season this year, U?

All along. With a little luck they can go 10-6 with a wildcard playoff loss again. I still don't see us not winning the division but that's because the rest of the division is worse than us.

Feels about right looking at the schedule. Not liking the 3 WC trips and 3 out of 4 on the road to close out.

Ben is looking young and frisky, we'll just have to see if The Replacements can deliver 30 points a game, yea verily

I could see 10 - 6 or 11 - 5. Then again I just got back my signed Juju and Ben jerseys today so I have the black and gold glasses on right now.

Many have argued that Tomlin's sterility with the Coaching Tree is much ado about nothing; however, Cowher had 8 assistants get HC jobs.

Taken in the context of everything else, it's a horrible indicator for Shades.

It's tough to have a coaching tree when all your coaches are older than you, and don't leave. Better that the 3 former head coaches on staff, never once spoke against Tomlin, and after watching Todd Haley in Cle last year, Dude couldn't hold it together for 8 games!

Plus no one wants to give credit for the one coach that did leave and got coach of the year. Did anyone in the Cowher coaching tree accomplish that? Noll had Dungy, don't think he got coach of the year, but he was a winner and won a superbowl as a coach.

A lot of Cowher's coaches were older than him. I don't think most coaches speak out against other coaches. So not sure what you are trying to say here. Why would a coach speak out against anyone when the NFL has limited jobs and you are always trying to find a job? I don't remember any coaches speaking out against the clowns coaches through the years but so what?

The coach of the year was already on Tomlin's staff when he arrived. He was also "retired" by the Steelers. So I'm not giving credit to Tomlin for a guy that he didn't want on his staff and was there when he arrived.

The most important question was never asked when they extended Tomlin

They give Tomlin and extension timing him out with Ben, who will be 40 in 2022. Was that wise?

While Ben had a strong season in 2018, I don't think the OL will be as good as it was years ago in 2019 and beyond. Age is catching up to Pouncey. Feiler is not as good as Gilbert was. Foster is getting old too.

Ben has taken a lot of hits. When you factor in his playing style, could this be his last really good season? We just don't know the answer, which makes Art II's decision to extend Tomlin genuinely mystifying. In a short amount of time, we might need a new QB, new Center, and new #1 Corner. Tomlin is not a re-building coach that will cut and slash what is needed. History shows he holds on to older vets too long.

Some might point out Brady and Brees are old. Yes, Brady and Brees are old, but they throw short and don't get hit as much.

Mods, can you merge this attention-seeking ***** of the thread with the 8 page thread we already have on the extension for Mike Tomlin?

Ok we get it you don't like Tomlin, Jeezus.

Its a dig at Art II.

The smart play was to extend no one. If Ben play declines, it over and there is no grantee he'll want to continue in the visible decline

It has been explained coach why it was smart play in their eyes.

Art does what is best for business. Fans aren't always going to agree, nor do they have to.

It doesn't stop them from canning him if there is a want to.
