Mike Mitchell: Steelers' defense not in 'panic mode'

I know Lake had some early success.

But you wonder a little when your OLBs and S's struggle who are both coached by players rich on playing experience but short on coaching experience.

It could be ****** drafting

orrrrrrrr someone isn't coaching them up....

one of the two?

or perhaps something inbetween

I think the DB's have improved since the arrival of Coach Lake And His Knee, Gay in particular, but like the rest of the efense, I think that Tombert can't draft for ****.

You're worried about getting beat deep? I'm worried that every time a TE or RB releases from play action, that it looks like a ******* trick play to our D.

I would take 4 Darren Perry types rather than keep trying to get another Troy.

I don't think our Efense is as gloom and doom as some here think. But it isn't prize roses either. I'm hoping around 15th in the league, definately an improvement, but not by much. even 17 would be better as that would stillbe a pointing up arrow.

Salute the nation

I am hoping for above 15, but yeah will take any improvement over last year.

I watched the entire Bills game and as tough as it was to watch, I kept reminding myself it was preseason, it was in Buffalo etc, etc. Every pre-season I seem to panic that the defense is not tough enough, strong enough etc and by the end of the season the Steelers seem to find a way to win.

From what I have seen so far on the field, are we only going to have an occasional James Harrison bull rush sack as a positive Defensive play? Geez he's 37!

Personally, having watched Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and now Mike Tomlin, I think Mike Tomlin is much more like Chuck Noll than Bill Cowher. He's not an in your face type of coach he foams at the mouth but his words "Walking Dead". should carry weight with the players like Chuck Noll's did with his players.

My problem is not Mike Tomlin but the personnel we have. Admittedly we were blessed during the Noll era to have such a unique group of guys who took their" life's work" at the time, football seriously. If Chuck Noll would have said the Defense played like the walking dead, you can rest assured that the next game the other team's Offense was in for a beating. The players responded. Is it just me or do I think the present players are indifferent to how bad they look? That's was scares me about this season. Mitchell has NOT shown me a darn thing since he's been here other than he can talk a lot. Maybe he needs to get on with life's work and be a commentator on ESPN football extra. At least when Ryan Clark talked (and he did a lot) he backed it up on the Field. I see a few signs of hope on D, Heyward & Shazier but beyond that? UGH.

Finally, I know the league has changed the rules to favor the offense to score more points to make the game more interesting and "fun" to watch (Please don't deny that Goodell) BUT our defense looks like it forgot to read the memo. "You are supposed to stop the other teams Offense before they score a touch down AND 2 pt play.

I have honestly looked at the regular season schedule and right now an 8-8 season looks like the VERY BEST WE CAN possibly hope for. We'll score on lot of point but lose a lot of shoot outs and on the weeks the offense is struggling we will get killed.

I think the difference is when the players see no one held accountable they don't have the passion & fear as Chuck Noll teams.

When you hear those guys speak of him still to this day. You can feel the amount of respect they had for him.

Plus todays player is different. Take Jason Worlids for example. Was he playing for the love of the game?

Also I think people compare Tomlin to Cohwer & that's not fair. Even know he didn't develop a QB & struggled to win big games. Bill was a grinder, and a control freak who had a grip on every single piece of the team.

I just think he was one of the greats even know he doesn't have a lot of rings. Now with a average coach his mistakes, and weakness's are magnified.

If Bill ever said he was gonna unleash hell. You could count on a arse whipping for whoever was next. Not getting smacked around again.

Noll could play great mind games with players. I think it was Jon Kolb who hailed from Oklahoma State who tells the story about Chas Noll summoning him into his office early in his career. Kolb attended Oklahoma State, was a cowboy and like western songs and guitar, He thought Noll was calling him in to cut him. When he came into the coach;s office, there sat Noll, wearing Cowboy boots strumming a simple guitar song. Noll told him he never played a guitar before but put his mind to learning how ( Noll was an incredible talent). His message to Kolb was if you put as much effort into learning to be a top notch lineman as I did in learning to play guitar you'll be fine. Needless to say Kolb, a young and scared player left with the confidence and trust of his coach and went on to be a GREAT O lineman.

Don't kid yourself, if you didn't work hard or were a bonehead, Noll gave you your walking papers and the famous line of getting on "with life's work".
